Gilbane Advisor 9-22-21 — No-code, data stacks, OpenMetadata

This week we have articles from Louise de Leyritz and Suresh Srinivas. News comes from RWS Language Weaver and ServiceNow, Adobe, Progress, and Kentico.

Opinion / Analysis

What If … you had to build a data stack with no-code tools?

Well, not only with no-code tools. Louise de Leyritz’s title is usefully clicky in that it will get you thinking about how no-code tools can contribute to building a modern data stack. In particular, support for data democratization — providing a way for non-technical parts of your organization to gain operational access to critical data. The article looks at the pros and cons, and suggests an appropriate set of no-code tools to consider for data science / machine learning.

Announcing OpenMetadata

Metadata a a critical component for lots of corporate applications, but how do you manage it in a world of data lakes and hybrid data stacks that need to be shared across different functions? Suresh Srinivas is well placed to tackle this problem having done so at Uber. But he is proposing an open source approach that goes beyond a centralized Metadata Lake to a Metadata Graph. Very interesting.

Gilbane Advisor 9-15-21 — bio neurons, neural nets, GraphQL over SPARQL

This week we have articles from Kurt Cagle and Alberto Romero. News comes from Acquia and Widen, Google Workspace, InMoment and Lexalytics, DataRobot, and Grammarly.

Opinion / Analysis

Why GraphQL will rewrite the Semantic Web

I like SPARQL, but increasingly I have to admit a hard reality: there’s a new kid on the block that I think may very well dethrone the language, and perhaps even RDF. …I think that the king of the hill will likely end up being GraphQL.

The title may startle, but Cagle is providing a thoughtful look ahead. This is an important read if you work with or track these or related technologies. Even if you don’t work directly with any of the technologies he discusses but are, or will be, managing or using applications based on them, his 12 minute (2/* perhaps) explanation will make you smarter.

https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/why-graphql-rewrite-semantic-web-kurt-cagle/

Here’s why we may need to rethink artificial neural networks

“What if I told you that a biological neuron is better represented by a whole artificial neural network than by a single artificial neuron?” Alberto Romero asks, and then explains why, and what this means if the current trajectory of AI investment continues. To over-simplify, using artificial neuron networks is valuable and useful for certain types of ML applications, but not for advancing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). There are also ethical and environmental repercussions. The 15 minute read is worth your time and happily accessible for non-specialists.

Gilbane Advisor 9-1-21 — Privacy-what to do? ML explained

This week we have articles from Benedict Evans and an educational video starring Hillary Mason. News comes from Apache, Bridgeline, Qumu, Apple, Wondershare, Otter ai, and TransPerfect + Webcertain.

We’ll be on vacation next week so our next issue will be September 15th. We were kidding last week when we said we would probably be back :).

Opinion / Analysis

Privacy, ads, and confusion

Privacy is coming to the internet and cookies are going away. This is long overdue – but we don’t know what happens next, we don’t have much consensus on what online privacy actually means, and most of what’s on the table conflicts fundamentally with competition.

Benedict Evans’ description of where we are and what we don’t know is on target, and is a rewarding read for those who know they don’t know, as well as those that think they do know – perhaps a colleague.

https://www.ben-evans.com/benedictevans/2021/8/27/understanding-privacy

Watch a computer scientist explain machine learning in 5 levels of difficulty

Hillary Mason does a delightful job of explaining machine learning to, in order, an 8 year old, a 9th grader, a college student, and a grad student, and then discussing the current state of ML with a fellow computer scientist. This 26 minute video (with transcript) is a valuable learning tool for anyone not versed in computer science. It is just as valuable to those who are proficient in ML but looking for short helpful ways to explain it to a child, parent, spouse, boss, whoever. Plus, it is fun to watch.

Gilbane Advisor 8-25-21 — Bluesky, big data, graphs and hypergraphs

This week we have articles on Twitter Bluesky and beyond graphs to hypergraphs. News comes from Adobe and Frame io, Umbraco and Monterro, Confluent, and Mural.

We’ll be back as usual next Wednesday to provide you with reading for the holiday weekend in the U.S. – if you can’t help yourself. We’ll be on vacation the week after reading other things and communing with all things Atlantic seashore. We’ll probably be back :).

Opinion / Analysis

How big data carried graph theory into new dimensions

Graph databases and knowledge graphs are already advancing our ability to express, navigate, and learn from data. But as computing power and data sets grow, graphs as we know them are not sufficient for keeping up with the full richness and complexity we find. Stephen Ornes explains why, and why hypergraphs are a necessary part of the future.

Don’t panic. You’re not behind the curve. But this article will help you think strategically about current knowledge graph initiatives, and start preparing you for what comes next.

Twitter’s decentralized social network project finally has a leader

Twitter announced the Bluesky project in 2019, and the reception was an unsurprising combination of skepticism and cheers. Tim Bray’s reaction included both, and is still a good and relevant read. Last week’s announcement of an official project leader has generated what is probably the most press the project has received since. Not that there hasn’t been some progress — see the Ecosystem Review by the new project lead Jay Graber, published in January. Nonetheless, this is not something imminent. It is however, worthy of contribution and encouragement.

Gilbane Advisor 8-18-21 — Graph thinking, machine learning ops

This week we have articles from Paco Nathan (@pacoid)and Kabir Nagrecha (@KabirNagrecha). News comes from Bloomreach, MarkLogic, Acquia, OpenAI, and Moonwalk Universal and IBM.

Opinion / Analysis

The last, and often the most difficult and costly, step before a promising but complex enterprise technologies becomes mainstream is for organizations to figure out how to operationalize them. Knowledge graphs and machine learning are two such technologies at this stage. How do they fit in with existing software, systems, processes, and resources? What has to change, what will it cost, and how long will it take?

Big questions, but both articles this week should be useful when you’re thinking about strategies. First, Kabir Nagrecha discusses how existing systems research and practices contribute to machine learning operations (MLOps). Next, Paco Nathan looks at ways to think about knowledge graphs in the context of systems thinking and complex problem solving.

Gilbane Advisor 8-11-21 — Standardized internet, Facebook & FTC

This week we have articles from Mark Nottingham (@mnot)and Ethan Zuckerman (@EthanZ). News comes from KPS and Brightspot, Lilt, Elastic Search, and LumenVox.

Opinion / Analysis

How the next layer of the internet is going to be standardised

Mark Nottingham takes a look at the UK Competition and Market Authority’s (CMA) investigation and agreement with Google, and the US proposed ACCESS Act 2021, which would require designated platforms to conform to interoperability standards set a new committee run by the FTC. He explains why these well-intentioned efforts could result in internet fragmentation and ossification. Nottingham then asks whether the IETF and W3C should take on this standards development and discusses the pros and cons. Certainly they should have at least an advisory role — anything less would be negligent. This article should be required reading for anyone advising government regulators, if not the regulators themselves.

Facebook only cares about privacy for advertisers

The “only” in the title may sound a little strong, but given that 98% of Facebook’s revenue comes from advertisers, the title is fair enough. Especially as Facebook just shut down accounts of researchers at NYU’s Ad Observatory project and said it was to “protect people’s privacy in line with our privacy program under the FTC Order”. To put it mildly, this was a misleading statement. Ethan Zuckerman explains what happened, and why this kind of research is critical to understanding how personal data is being used to spread misinformation, among other things.

Gilbane Advisor 8-4-21 — metaverses, DYI scrape and clean data

This week we have articles from Jon Udell and Ben Thompson. News comes from TransPerfect and Semantix, Datadobi, Couchbase, HubSpot, and the Apache Cassandra Project.

BTW, I don’t normally recommend anything to read that is completely behind a firewall. I do often recommend articles when the publisher offers a few free articles before restricting access.

Opinion / Analysis

A beautiful power tool to scrape, clean, and combine data

Are you someone who is not a data scientist but would love to be able to do some of your own data analysis without learning to code? Jon Udell has been looking for a way for non-technologists do this for years. He is technical himself, but often finds the effort more trouble than it’s worth. He provides an in-depth review of a product (it’s not his and there is a free version), and walks you through how he has used it. If you want some data analysis agency and don’t mind digging in to some details, this article is worth a look.

https://blog.jonudell.net/

Metaverses

In his weekly free article Ben Thompson picks up on the fact that both Microsoft and Facebook have recently started talking about “the metaverse”. Of course their concepts of the metaverse differ in predictable ways: think Microsoft -> enterprise applications, and Facebook -> a virtual reality platform. Thomson goes deeper and provides some background on the term and its use. It is a great word, and it’s a safe bet we’ll be hearing it a lot more and used with much imagination.

Gilbane Advisor 7-21-21 — DAM scaling, quantum computing

First of all please note that next week I’ll be on vacation. 🏖

This week we have articles from the Netflix Technology Blog, HBR, and McKinsey. This week’s news comes from Widen and Clarifai, Sinequa, Microsoft, Agilty CMS, and Appfire and Spartez.

Opinion / Analysis

Not every organization has the digital asset management challenges that Netflix has, at least in terms of scale. But even if you don’t, our first article this week is a generous how-they-did-it by Netflix software engineers Burak Bacioglu and Meenakshi Jindal, to share with product and development teams.

We follow with two explainers / perspectives on quantum computing. Both are short, high level, and will help keep you current. First, Francesco Bova, Avi Goldfarb, and Roger Melko explain why computing applications that require combinatoric calculations are an effective way to understand existing and near term uses of quantum computing. Next, Victor Galitski, Dmitry Green, Benjamin Lev, Yuval Oreg, and Henning Soller discuss how to navigate investment decisions in quantum computing given its nascent state.
