O’Reilly launches O’Reilly Answers

O’Reilly announced the launch of O’Reilly Answers, an advanced natural language processing (NLP) engine that delivers quick, contextually relevant answers to challenging technical questions posed by users through O’Reilly online learning. With a one-click integration into Slack, O’Reilly Answers helps users learn from and discover content. Leveraging advanced machine learning techniques, the O’Reilly Answers search engine provides relevant highlights and snippets from O’Reilly’s library of expert content across thousands of O’Reilly’s titles, pointing users directly to only the most applicable resources. To encourage deeper discovery, the feature allows users to drill down into full content pieces from referenced titles. To further improve productivity, all functions of O’Reilly Answers are available through a simple Slack Integration.

Headless content management system Strapi upgrades community and enterprise versions

Strapi announced enhancements to both its community and enterprise versions, adding features that simplify the user experience so that developers and content creators can be more productive. The new versions add publication workflow features, such as managing drafts and privileges, and introduces easy-to-get-started templates for many content-driven use cases. Strapi also added a “bronze plan” that provides access to its Role Based Access Control feature at a reduced subscription price. This plan is intended for startup to mid-market customers that are not seeking enterprise-level support services.

The Strapi CMS streamlines the delivery of content on any platform: websites, smartphones, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The Strapi CMS is customizable using application programming interfaces (APIs) and works with all the JAMstack static site generators and front-end frameworks (like Gatsby.js, Next.js, Nuxt.js, Angular, React, Vue.js). It provides support for both SQL and NoSQL databases and can be deployed anywhere: public or private cloud (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Digital Ocean), Platform-as-a-Service (Heroku, Platform.sh, etc.) or on-premise servers. The community version is free open source software available for download. The Enterprise Edition is now available in three self-hosted paid plans.

Lucid launches virtual whiteboard application Lucidspark

Lucid, provider of visual collaboration software, announced the expansion of its visual collaboration suite with the release of Lucidspark, a cloud-based virtual whiteboard where teams can work together in real time. Lucidspark helps teams to more effectively:

  • Ideate: Capture and share ideas in a virtual whiteboard that provides the flexibility to maximize individual and team creativity. Lucidspark provides an infinite canvas to brainstorm, ideate, and work together.
  • Create: Collaborate seamlessly and get everyone aligned. Teams can work together in real time or asynchronously and easily keep track of everyone’s contributions. Lucidspark also provides functionality to facilitate structured sessions, like allowing leaders to set the pace and clarify roles while participants can vote and react to help prioritize ideas.
  • Act: Build shared consensus, align teams on priorities and transform ideas into next steps. Team members can automatically organize notes that highlight key results and illustrate actionable insights that can then be shared with leadership for approvals and buy-in. From there, teams can develop the agile workflows and game plans needed to build momentum and keep projects moving forward.

Lucidspark integrates with Lucid’s intelligent diagramming application, Lucidchart, making it possible to collaborate from initial idea through reality. For instance, once a team brainstorms details of a new application in Lucidspark, they can transition into Lucidchart to visualize the scrum teams, organizational processes and technical systems that will be necessary to make the application a reality.

Netlify announces Netlify Edge Handlers

Netlify announced early access for Netlify Edge Handlers, enabling fast, personalized content in websites and web apps by executing custom code at the network edge. Edge Handlers bring edge compute into a single git-based Jamstack workflow, streamlining Continuous Delivery between frontend developers and DevOps and improving time to market. Now, with Edge Handlers, developers write simple JavaScript that builds and deploys to the network edge using Netlify, bringing together multiple complex work streams into a single workflow tied to a common git repository.

Developers can use Netlify’s platform to operate edge logic from preview to production, including build automation through git, atomic deploys to Netlify’s multi-cloud edge network, site previews and instant rollbacks. Content and traffic are adjusted locally, without a roundtrip to an origin server.

  • Frontend workflow: Frontend developers use their favorite tools in the Netlify platform to build, preview and deploy, while maintaining full control over how their content is served to the end user.
  • Simplified customization at the edge: The Edge Handlers API can fetch, cache and update content, allowing developers to deliver a personalized, better web experience for visitors with minimal development work.
  • Monitor and log activity: Detailed logs for Edge Handlers can be managed and viewed from within the Netlify UI, making it easy to track usage and resolve issues quickly.
  • Validate and test locally: Coming soon, Edge Handlers can be created on a local machine or with Netlify developer tools, used with any frontend framework to proxy requests and test before shipping.

Google Cloud announces Google Workspace

Google Cloud announced Google Workspace, a new brand identity that reflects a deeply integrated product experience, plus new editions to purchase tailored to customers’ needs. Google Workspace brings together messaging, meetings, docs, and tasks—all built with Google security. In July, Google announced a better home for work, the first step in its vision for a single unified experience to create, communicate, and collaborate. Today, this new home for work is generally available to all Google Workspace business customers and, in the coming months, will also roll out to consumers. The Google Workspace user experience brings together core tools for communication and collaboration—like chat, email, voice and video calling, and content management. New features include:

  • Linked previews: Available today, linked previews in Docs, Sheets, and Slides allow users to preview the content of a link without leaving the original document.
  • Smart chips in Docs, Sheets, and Slides: Beginning to roll out today, when you @mention someone in a document, a popup will display details providing context and even suggest actions like sharing the document. By connecting users to relevant content and people right in Docs, Sheets and Slides, Google Workspace helps users get more done from where they already are.
  • Doc creation in rooms: In the coming weeks, Google Workspace will enable users to dynamically create and collaborate on a document (Docs, Sheets, Slides) within a room in Chat, without ever having to switch tabs or tools.
  • Meet picture-in-picture across Docs, Sheets and Slides: Back in July, Google announced it’s bringing Meet picture-in-picture to Gmail and Chat, so users can see and hear the people they’re working with while collaborating. In the coming months, Google will roll out Meet picture-in-picture to Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

The new Google Workspace brand reflects Google’s product vision for a flexible, helpful, and simple experience with integration and collaboration at its core. In the coming weeks, users will see new four-color icons for Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Meet, and our collaborative content creation tools like Docs, Sheets, and Slides, that resemble the same family.

We are also bringing Google Workspace to our education and nonprofit customers in the coming months. Education customers can continue to access our tools via G Suite for Education, which includes Classroom, Assignments, Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Meet. G Suite for Nonprofits will continue to be available to eligible organizations through the Google for Nonprofits program.

Dstl releases free Baleen 3 data processing update

The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) has released a new free version of its popular data processing tool. Baleen 3 is a tool for building data processing pipelines using the open source Annot8 framework and succeeds Baleen 2, one of the first open source projects by Dstl, the science inside UK defence and security. It offers users the ability to search, process and collate data, and is suitable for personal and commercial applications. It has been used across government, and by industry and academia, and also internationally as well as in the UK.

The tool enables the creation of a bespoke chain of “processors” to extract information from unstructured data (e.g. text documents, images). For example, Baleen 3 could process a folder with thousands of Word Documents and PDFs in it to extract all e-mail addresses and phone numbers in those documents and store them in a database. As well as text, Baleen 3 can also find and extract images within those documents, perform OCR to find text within those images, translate that text into English, and then run machine learning models to find mentions of People within those images. Baleen 3 supports components developed within the Annot8 framework, and as a result it is easy to extend and develop further to cover new use cases and provide additional functionality. There are already a large number of components available for use within the Annot8 framework, including some previously developed by Dstl.

Following the release of Baleen 3, support for the existing Baleen 2 project will be withdrawn. Dstl is encouraging all users to move to using Baleen 3 where possible. Baleen 3 is built on top of newer technologies, and will be easier to maintain and deploy as a result of the upgrade. It also extends Baleen 2’s focus on text to support other forms of unstructured data, such as images. Baleen 3 is available to download now.
