Opinion / Analysis

One big graph and the interorganization

Alan Morrison makes the case for a less-hyped version of web3 as an “evolution of P2P networking + shared file systems” that is achievable today — not that it will be easy given the huge technical debt we are currently saddled with. Morrison’s argument however is appealing and a worthy and easy read. (4 min).

APIs don’t matter?!?

APIs are of course valuable for platform, application, and line-of business developers, but as API ecosystems evolve over time the value to each of these shifts. Terry Crowley explains, for example, how the moat value of APIs to platforms degrades over time. Crowley also looks at other ways the value changes that anyone in the API value chain ecosystem will benefit from understanding. (11 min).

Smartling expands Neural Machine Translation Hub

Smartling, an enterprise translation solutions company, announced a major product expansion for its Neural Machine Translation (NMT) Hub, available to all Smartling customers. Smartling uses a combination of technologies such as Neural Machine translation, which is capable of providing translation quality comparable to that of human translation, their proprietary Machine Learning models and “human-in-the-loop” delivery platform.

Smartling spent years collecting vast volumes of Machine Translation Quality data across multiple translation directions and content types, based on a widely accepted Translation Error Rate (TER) automated MT evaluation metric. From there, the data was used to train the AI models to not just make accurate decisions for the best MT engine selection, but consider fallback engine suggestions as well. This solves for the main deficiency associated with single-engine approach. The AI algorithms in NMT Hub are designed to dynamically learn from billions of data points available through Smartling’s closed-loop enterprise content delivery platform to ensuring the best quality MT output.

Designed to tackle translation issues that traditional single-engine approaches are not able to solve, Smartling’s NMT Hub is built to solve many of the challenges web developers and content managers.

Pinecone launches hybrid search functionality

Pinecone Systems Inc., a machine learning (ML) search infrastructure company, announced the release of a keyword-aware semantic search solution that enables accessible and advanced combination of semantic and keyword search results. “Vector search” allows companies to provide relevant results based on semantic, or similar meanings, as opposed to simple keyword-based searches. At the same time, keywords still matter in searches involving uncommon words like names or industry-specific terms. With few exceptions, companies have to choose between semantic search and keyword search, or running both systems in parallel.

Neither of these options is ideal. When companies choose one or the other, the results are not as complete as they could be, and when they run both systems in parallel and try to combine the results, cost and complexity goes up significantly. This technology can search across two data types — “dense vectors” generated by ML models to represent meaning, and “sparse vectors” generated by traditional keyword-ranking models such as BM25 — before automatically fusing everything into one ranked list of the most relevant results. The Pinecone hybrid search feature is available in beta.

Tridion now available for small-to-medium sized businesses

RWS, a provider of technology-enabled language, content and intellectual property services, announced the launch of Tridion Sites Editions for fast growing companies looking to expand into international markets.

Many of the world’s largest brands rely on Tridion Sites, a web content management system (WCMS), to create, manage and deliver multilingual digital experiences to global customers, employees and partners across any channel. Contentful announces new capabilities to content platform

Contentful, a composable content platform, unveiled its vision for composable content and the new Contentful Studio product, platform orchestration capabilities, and App Framework features:

  • Connect content experiences with Contentful orchestration. A new set of orchestration capabilities native to the platform enables companies to orchestrate content experiences across teams, regions, and brands without the need to piece together content from different data sources.
  • Create streamlined content with Contentful Studio. Contentful Studio empowers customers to streamline content workflows, development, and publication in one central location. With easy access to all the tools content creators need to produce high-quality content, Studio allows teams to remove reliance on developers by placing the power directly in the hands of content creators. Access rights are centrally managed with governance features.
  • Extend with Contentful App Framework and Ecosystem. The App Framework makes it easier for businesses to adapt the platform to the preferences and routines of their digital teams – from business-specific UIs to integrating personalization or translation tools of choice. Contentful shipped a new version of the open-source design system, Forma 36, to enhance the platform with visually appealing and accessible features. App actions make the content lifecycle more efficient to build and link individual apps together.

Acquia announces updates to Acquia Code Studio

Acquia announced major updates to Acquia Code Studio, a full stack Drupal development platform. A part of Acquia Digital Experience Platform (DXP), Acquia Code Studio provides developers with the tools to plan, build, review, test, deploy, and measure Drupal applications.
