Apple Final Cut Pro 2 on iPad and Mac get new AI features

Apple introduced Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 based on capabilities of the new iPad Pro. Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 transforms iPad into a multicam production studio with Live Multicam. Users can speed up their shoot by connecting and previewing up to four cameras at once. To support Live Multicam, Final Cut Camera — a new video capture app — comes to iPhone and iPad, letting creators wirelessly connect and remotely direct each video angle with pro controls. Final Cut Camera also works as a standalone professional video capture app on iPhone and iPad. External project support allows users to edit projects directly from an external drive with the Thunderbolt connection of iPad Pro. Editing and finishing a project with Final Cut Pro on the new iPad Pro with the M4 chip enables users to color grade, apply multiple effects, and render graphically intense timelines faster.

New artificial intelligence features come to Final Cut Pro for Mac 10.8, giving editors the ability to rapidly customize the look of videos or photos in a single click and retime visuals easily. Workflow-accelerating tools add ways to manage color correction and video effects, as well as search and navigate the timeline with ease.

Acquia supports latest content accessibility guidelines

Acquia, a digital experience software vendor , today announced that its Monsido web optimization platform offers support for WCAG 2.2, the latest web content accessibility guidelines recommended by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Using the Accessibility Module in Monsido, customers can automatically scan their websites, obtain an accessibility score, and receive actionable recommendations to help ensure the accessibility of their digital content for individuals with disabilities. 

WCAG 2.2 expands on WCAG 2.1 – which addressed accessibility issues for individuals with blindness, deafness, and mobility requirements – with new criteria to make the web more productive for those with low vision and cognitive disabilities, as well as those using tablets and other mobile devices. The Monsido platform addresses common accessibility issues against these latest guidelines, and enables errors to be filtered by the desired level of compliance (e.g. A, AA, or AAA) for easy prioritization. Comprehensive reports explain how to resolve issues, and the Accessibility Fast Track feature empowers teams to instantly fix repetitive errors across multiple pages. For additional support, teams can access the Accessibility Help Center, which breaks down the more technical WCAG 2.2 checks in plain language.

Human and artificial general intelligence arises from next token prediction

“This post frames and explores the hypothesis that general intelligence arises when a learning system becomes very good at next token prediction. This hypothesis is often implied, hidden, or dancing at the margins of industrial and academic AI research — but so far, I don’t think it’s received as much open discussion as I think it merits.”

Rachel Draelos, who is an MD with a PhD in Computer Science starts by pointing out that humans are next-word predictors — literally all the time. She then makes the more general case that we are token predicting the world around us through our senses, and how all of this is consistent with current neuroscience research. 

An interesting read and in spite of the topic the post is easily accessible to a general audience — there are links to technical papers. (16 min)

Looking for AI use-cases

“We’ve had ChatGPT for 18 months, but what’s it for? What are the use-cases? Why isn’t it useful for everyone, right now? Do Large Language Models become universal tools that can do ‘any’ task, or do we wrap them in single-purpose apps, and build thousands of new companies around that?”

Benedict Evans is trying to figure out how the AI application market will evolve beyond niche use cases to deliver on the widely expected growth and step change. His focus on product market fit makes his article more useful than speculative. (9 min)

Trados announces Trados Studio 2024

Trados, the translation platform by RWS, announced the upcoming release of Trados Studio 2024, their computer-assisted translation tool. Studio 2024 includes new features that improve accessibility, democratize access to generative AI, and increase management capabilities:

  • Perform a project roundtrip (create, manage, translate, deliver) with screen readers and leverage native dictation in the online editor.
  • Access smart AI capabilities, such as our new ‘Trados Copilot – AI Assistant’ app exclusive to Trados Studio 2024, seamless support for Machine Translation Quality Estimation (MTQE) data and Smart Help – intelligent support as you work.
  • Benefit from full support for local, server and cloud-based projects in the new Manager view, better integration with cloud capabilities and the ability to leverage cloud resources during batch processing in local Studio projects.

  • The workflow editor has the option to edit outcomes in human workflow tasks. This functionality simplifies the user experience for administrators making it easier for them to manage workflows, particularly when handling task transitions (which help users decide which ‘route’ they want their workflows to follow).

Snowflake launches Arctic, an open enterprise-grade LLM

Snowflake announced Snowflake Arctic, a large language model (LLM) an open, enterprise-grade LLM. It is optimized for complex enterprise workloads. In addition, Snowflake is releasing Arctic’s weights under an Apache 2.0 license and details of the research leading to how it was trained. The Snowflake Arctic LLM is a part of the Snowflake Arctic model family, a family of models built by Snowflake that also include practical text-embedding models for retrieval use cases.

Snowflake Arctic comes with an Apache 2.0 license that permits ungated personal, research, and commercial use. Snowflake also provides code templates, alongside flexible inference and training options so users can get started with deploying and customizing Arctic using their preferred frameworks. These will include NVIDIA NIM with NVIDIA TensorRT-LLM, vLLM, and Hugging Face. For immediate use, Arctic is available for serverless inference in Snowflake Cortex, Snowflake’s service that offers machine learning and AI solutions in the Data Cloud. It will also be available on Amazon Web Services(AWS), alongside other model gardens and catalogs, which will include Hugging Face, Lamini, Microsoft Azure, NVIDIA API catalog, Perplexity, and Together AI. In addition to the Arctic LLM, the Snowflake Arctic family of models also includes the recently announced Arctic embed.

AtScale introduces Developer Community Edition for semantic modeling
