Gilbane Advisor 6-22-22 — Relational KGs, performance reasoning

This week we feature articles from Victor Morgante, and Stephen Marche.

Additional reading comes from Kathrin Blagec, Adriano Barbosa-Silva, Simon Ott & Matthias Samwald, Ethan Batraski, and Fabio Chiusano.

News comes from Adobe, Canto, Umbraco, and Snowflake.

Reminder: If you’ve missed any recent issues you can see them here.

Opinion / Analysis

What is a relational knowledge graph?

We recently pointed to a high-level description of relational knowledge graphs based on a presentation by Bob Muglia. Victor Morgante, a practitioner and business analyst, provides broader context and a more detailed explanation, including an illustration of “an actual schema variously morphing between a classical relational view (Entity Relationship Diagram) and a graph view (Property Graph Schema)”. Machine sentience is overrated

LaMDA is no more conscious than a pocket calculator. …the fantasy of machine sentience has once again been allowed to dominate the artificial-intelligence conversation when much stranger and richer, and more potentially dangerous and beautiful, developments are under way.

Stephen Marche after speaking with engineers working on Google’s latest and far more powerful language model, PaLM. PaLM, can “perform reasoning” to answer a math problem only with “chain-of-thought prompting”, but the engineers don’t know how or why. (6 min).

Gilbane Advisor 6-15-22 — LinkBERT, VALHALLA, text networks

This week we feature articles from Lauren Hinkel, and Michihiro Yasunaga, Jure Leskovec, & Percy Liang.

Additional reading comes from Antoine Craske, Petr Korab, and Ben Lorica & Kenn So.

News comes from Crafter, Siteimprove, MongoDB, and Foxit.

Reminder: If you’ve missed any recent issues you can see them here.

Opinion / Analysis

LinkBERT: improving language model training with document link

A challenge with most common LM pretraining strategies is that they model a single document at a time. That is, one would split a text corpus into a list of documents and draw training instances for LMs from each document independently. Treating each document independently may pose limitations because documents often have rich dependencies with each other… Models that train without these dependencies may fail to capture knowledge or facts that are spread across multiple documents.

Michihiro Yasunaga, Jure Leskovec, & Percy Liang describe LinkBERT, a pretaining method that builds a graph of multiple documents with link information to address this limitation. Links to the paper and code are included. (9 min).

Hallucinating to better text translation

Moving from Stanford to MIT and UC San Diego… Lauren Hinkel describes another machine learning enhancement method focused on improving language translation by using a transformer that “hallucinates” an image based on text that is then used for multimodal translation. (4 min).

Gilbane Advisor 6-8-22 — knowledge graphs and graphics, CSS 2022

This week we feature a paper by Michael E. Deagen, Jamie P. McCusker, Tolulomo Fateye, Samuel Stouffer, L. Cate Brinson, Deborah L. McGuinness & Linda S. Schadler, and an article by Adam Argyle.

Additional reading comes from Maria Stasimioti, Jon Udell, and Colin Morris.

News comes from Stardog, Algolia, MariaDB & MindsDB, and Access Innovations & SiteFusion.

Opinion / Analysis

FAIR and interactive data graphics from a scientific knowledge graph

Very interesting paper. H/T: @storyneedle (22 min)

Graph databases capture richly linked domain knowledge by integrating heterogeneous data and metadata into a unified representation. Here, we present the use of bespoke, interactive data graphics (bar charts, scatter plots, etc.) for visual exploration of a knowledge graph. By modeling a chart as a set of metadata that describes semantic context (SPARQL query) separately from visual context (Vega-Lite specification), we leverage the high-level, declarative nature of the SPARQL and Vega-Lite grammars to concisely specify web-based, interactive data graphics synchronized to a knowledge graph.

This week we feature an article from Michael Andrews.

Additional reading comes from Piethein Strengholt, Cade Metz, and Petr Korab.

News comes from Ontotext, Contentstack, Syncro Soft, SimInsights, and Deepnote.

Opinion / Analysis

Opinion / Analysis

How should you protect your machine learning models and IP?

Pete Warden gets a lot of questions about this “usually… from executives, and digging deeper it became clear they were most worried about competitors gaining an advantage from what we released.”. It’s a good question and Warden provides good advice on what to do, and explains why it may be less of a problem than you think. (5 min)

Gilbane Advisor 5-18-22 — fediverse, web apps, languages

This week we feature articles from Richard MacManus, and Chris Nielsen.

Additional reading comes from Alan Morrison, Mikkel Dengsøe, and Isaac Caswell & Ankur Bapna.

News comes from Google Translate, Acquia, Cloudflare, and Elastic Search.

Opinion / Analysis

Does the fediverse point to our social media future?

Well, perhaps. There is certainly much that is appealing about the open source, standards-based, decentralized approach to social and web publishing and it’s most popular app, Mastodon. Richard MacManus is cautiously optimistic and correctly judicious regarding the timeframe in his answer (6 min).

I replaced my native iOS app with a cross-platform web app and no one noticed

Chris Nielsen was shocked that performance was not an issue when he built a web app version of his animation-heavy iOS app. He was also pleasantly surprised to find the web app caused fewer bugs than the native version. Web apps have caught up to native apps in many/most ways, so if you are still maintaining three code bases you should take another look as Nielsen did (8 min).

Gilbane Advisor 5-11-22 — relational KGs, feature importance

This week we feature articles from Tiernan Ray, and Cristiana de Azevedo von Stosch & Abhishek Singh.

Additional reading comes from Scott Brinker, Julia Angwin & Joris van Hoboken, Janko Roettgers, and Thomas Claburn.

News comes from the FIDO Alliance, Apple, Google and Microsoft, Sinequa, TeamViewer & SAP, and AppTek.

Opinion / Analysis

From the modern data stack to knowledge graphs

Tiernan Ray summarizes Microsoft and Snowflake veteran Bob Muglia’s keynote at last weeks Knowledge Graph Conference. Muglia’s presentation is about “relational knowledge graphs” that can model both data and and business rules. He is currently on the board of Relational AI, a startup building such a product. (4 min). Also see Has SQL gone too far?.

Why graph-modeling frameworks are the future of unsupervised learning

If you have too many features for the number of samples or want to remove co-linear features to improve your model, there are many techniques that can be applied in a supervised learning setting — Decision Trees, Random Forest, etc.

Until now, there are very few approaches that can identify feature importance in an unsupervised learning problem.

Cristiana de Azevedo von Stosch and Abhishek Singh propose a method for “feature selection based on feature importance determination [that] will reduce the processing time of any modeling approach.”. (7 min)

Gilbane Advisor 5-4-22 — web renaissance, MDS ecosystem

This week we feature articles from Anil Dash and Jordan Volz.

Additional reading comes from Jason Cohen, Cassie Kozyrkov, and Terry Crowley.

News comes from Expert .ai, Searchable .ai, Microsoft, and Hyland.

Opinion / Analysis

A web renaissance

I am as hopeful as Anil Dash about the possibility of something like a web renaissance and don’t disagree with what he says in his post (5 min). I built my own web site and have managed it since the nineties, and the ability to control my own content and presence was absolutely worth the effort. But I have seen countless businesses and individuals struggle with their own efforts, and remain cautious about the rate of adoption. Creating and maintaining a web presence today is already dramatically easier, and new tools will continue to make it less of a burden for developers and non-developers alike. But it needs to be simple enough to share space with your day job.
