Gilbane Advisor 5-4-22 — web renaissance, MDS ecosystem

This week we feature articles from Anil Dash and Jordan Volz.

Additional reading comes from Jason Cohen, Cassie Kozyrkov, and Terry Crowley.

News comes from Expert .ai, Searchable .ai, Microsoft, and Hyland.

Opinion / Analysis

A web renaissance

I am as hopeful as Anil Dash about the possibility of something like a web renaissance and don’t disagree with what he says in his post (5 min). I built my own web site and have managed it since the nineties, and the ability to control my own content and presence was absolutely worth the effort. But I have seen countless businesses and individuals struggle with their own efforts, and remain cautious about the rate of adoption. Creating and maintaining a web presence today is already dramatically easier, and new tools will continue to make it less of a burden for developers and non-developers alike. But it needs to be simple enough to share space with your day job.

We’ve covered the “modern data stack”a few times in the last year but Jordan Volz has a new “Spring 2022 Edition of the Modern Data Stack Ecosystem” (20 min) that is worth a read.

Gilbane Advisor 4-27-22 — SQL limits, Wasm opps

This week we feature articles from Benn Stancil and Renee Shah.

Additional reading comes Mike Loukides, Eric Benjamin Seufert, Jakob Nielsen, and Cobus Greyling.

News comes from Netlify, Databricks, Element, and Akamai.

Opinion / Analysis

Has SQL gone too far?

Like many of you, who have been focused largely on unstructured data management, I never expected SQL to remain so relevant for so long. Benn Stancil, who “has worked almost exclusively in SQL for” much of his career, has a thoughtful piece (8 min) explaining why he now thinks…

Just as SQL can, but shouldn’t, be used to define complex statistical analysis, perhaps SQL can, but probably shouldn’t, be used to model the complex operations of a business.

How WebAssembly gets used: 18 startups building with Wasm

WebAssembly (Wasm) has been around for a few years, is maturing, and is something that software developers, and not just web developers, should have on their radar. Wasm is already being used or supported by Cloudflare, Adobe, Google, Amazon Prime, Lyft, Disney+, the BBC, and others; The W3C has just published working drafts for WebAssembly 2.0; And startups and investors see opportunity. In this post investor Renee Shah reports on how and why startups are using Wasm, and includes a link to an excellent primer for those of you unfamiliar with it. (14 min)

Gilbane Advisor 4-20-22 — Future Twitter, secure blockchains

This week we feature articles from Ben Thompson and Jesus Rodriguez.

Additional reading comes from Pete Warden, Rand Fishkin, and Nature.

News comes from Adobe, dbt & Databricks, MongoDB & Google Cloud, Yext, and HeartCore.

Opinion / Analysis

Back to the future of Twitter

Ben Thompson has a proposal for Elon Musk, or anyone else willing to take the company private, on what to do with Twitter’s business model that is definitely worth a read. It is one of his weekly posts so not behind his paywall.

If you are familiar with the Bluesky project initially funded by Twitter, and now a separate organization, you might wonder why Thompson didn’t mention it. In response to a question on Twitter on how it differed he said his “proposal is much more technically feasible”. Maybe, maybe not, but his business case is more developed. (10 min)

The paper that can change the foundations of all blockchain cryptography

The foundation of cryptographic techniques used in L1 and L2 blockchains is premised on the existence of one-way-functions. If a one-way-function exists for a given problem, then its cryptographically secured and, if not, its likely to be vulnerable to different attacks. However, so far it has been nearly impossible to prove the existence of one-way-functions. In their paper, researchers from Cornell University found an answer drawing parallels to an obscure area of computer science.

The math behind the paper is well beyond me, but Rodriguez provides an easily digestible description of why this is important (4 min).

Gilbane Advisor 4-13-22 — Linked data, prediction machines

This week we feature articles from Ivo Velitchkov and John Ball.

Additional reading is from Cassie Kozyrkov, Chris Kernaghan, Enrique Dans, and dbt.

News comes from Sitecore, Google Cloud, Airbyte, and CYTRIO.

Opinion / Analysis

Linked Data uptake

Linked Data … was meant to be the second big information revolution after the world wide web. It was supposed to complement the web of documents with the web of data so that humans and machines can use the Internet as if it is a single database while enjoying the benefits of decentralisation… Yet, Linked Enterprise Data, just like Linked Open Data, is still marginal. Why is that so? And what can be done about it?

Good questions, and Ivo Velitchkov is well-placed to provide some answers. (9 min.)

Brains are Not prediction machines

If you read Dan McCreary’s article we recently featured that was inspired by Jeff Hawkins’ A Thousand Brains, you’ll want to read this piece from John Ball (27 min.). Gilbane Advisor 3-30-22 — neurosymbolic hybrid, content understanding

This week we feature articles from Gary Marcus and Daniel Tunkelang.

News comes from Access Innovations, Brightspot, Super .AI, and Indico Data.

We’ll be off next week, back the week after.

Opinion / Analysis

Deep learning is hitting a wall

There has always been a healthy skepticism that deep learning would take us to artificial general intelligence (AGI). But the genuinely amazing things that can be accomplished with the combination of deep learning, big data, and computing power led to a lazy optimism. Fortunately, that is changing, and it is increasingly clear that deep learning alone is insufficient to accomplish much of what is expected. Gary Marcus provides historical and recent context and makes a case for a neurosymbolic hybrid approach. Not too technical.

https://nautil.us/deep-learning-is-hitting-a-wall-14467/

Content similarity

Content classification and annotation offer useful approaches for content understanding, recognizing whether a piece of content is about a particular topic or mentions a particular entity. But most content exists in a space that is too rich to reduce to classification and annotation. A document is more than a category and a bag of entities. For content understanding to be worthy of the name, it needs to embrace the richness of the content it represents… A more granular approach to content understanding focuses on the similarity between documents.

Daniel Tunkelang’s latest post in his series on content understanding techniques. A bit technical.

Gilbane Advisor 3-23-22 — hypergrowth myth, operationalizing privacy

This week we feature articles from Jason Cohen and Rachel Dulberg.

Additional reading is from John Glaser & Elizabeth Gardner, Christine Moorman, Mike Melanson, and Thomas Claburn.

News comes from Progress, Liferay, Semantic Web Co & Wand, and Stepes.

Opinion / Analysis

The Elephant in the room: The myth of exponential hypergrowth

Fast-growing startups are frequently described as “exponential,” especially when the product is “viral.” Turns out, this is incorrect, even for Facebook and Slack. If you have an incorrect model, you don’t understand growth, which means you can’t control it, nor predict it. Here is a different model to understand how companies actually grow.

This is a must-read from Jason Cohen — not just for investors and startups, but business, marketing, and product managers. Well written with lots of great supporting charts. h/t: @dharmesh

Gilbane Advisor 3-16-22 — Words matter, hydrating tweets

This week we feature an article from Emily Tucker.

Additional reading is from Aruna Pisharody, David Rodenas, Cobus Greyling, and Hecate He.

News comes from Adobe, Wrike, Interprefy & Microsoft, and Syncro Soft.

Opinion / Analysis

Artifice and intelligence

The Center on Privacy & Technology at Georgetown Law’s Emily Tucker explains why they will stop using the terms “artificial intelligence”, “AI”, and “machine learning” in their work. She is certainly correct that words matter, and that the widespread lack of understanding and misuse of the terms is problematic. At the same time, not all institutional misuse is top-down and intentionally driven by greed and control – language laziness is pervasive and a bigger problem. Tucker’s proposed guidelines for replacement language are reasonable, though I don’t think “machine training” helps as replacement for “machine learning”.

Gilbane Advisor 3-9-22 — Browser teamwork, beyond web

This week we feature articles from Doc Searls, and Thomas Claburn.

Additional reading is from Rustam Lalkaka, Philipp Schreiber, and Kate Moran.

News comes from Contentstack & Conscia, Yext, Bynder & GatherContent, Searchspring, and Bounteous & Acquia.

Opinion / Analysis

Apple, Google, Microsoft, Mozilla agree on something: Make web dev lives easier

Not to mention web users frustrated by having to switch from their regular browser (e.g. Safari) on certain sites to complete a transaction, or worse, those who don’t realize the browser is the problem and move on.

Browser makers Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla, along with software consultancies Bocoup and Igalia, have agreed to work together to make web design technologies perform in a more consistent way across different platforms.

The benchmark they are using, Interop 2022, details some of the progress they are making. This is excellent news, but…

Beyond the Web

A more existential problem for the web, as Doc Searls describes in this post, is its client-server architecture — “So it’s time to think and build outside the Web’s ranchland. Models for that do exist, and some have been around a long time.”. The event mentioned in the post with Ethan Zuckerman was yesterday, but the Salon Series at the Ostrom Workshop discussing this is posting links to archives of the conversations.
