Apple, Google and Microsoft commit to expanded support for FIDO standard

Apple, Google and Microsoft announced plans to expand support for a common passwordless sign-in standard created by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium. The expanded capabilities will give websites and apps the ability to offer an end-to-end passwordless option. Users will sign in through the same action that they take multiple times each day to unlock their devices, such as a simple verification of their fingerprint or face, or a device PIN. This will be more secure when compared to passwords and multi-factor technologies such as one-time passcodes sent over SMS.

The platforms already support the FIDO Alliance standard, but previous implementations require users to sign in to each website or app with each device before using passwordless functionality. Today’s announcement extends these platform implementations to:

  1. Allow users to automatically access their FIDO sign-in credentials (referred to by some as a “passkey”) on many of their devices, even new ones, without having to re-enroll every account.
  2. Enable users to use FIDO authentication on their mobile device to sign in to an app or website on a nearby device, regardless of the OS platform or browser they are running.

Netlify Edge Functions accelerate web development at the edge

Netlify, a platform for modern web development, announced Netlify Edge Functions, bringing standards-based edge compute to Netlify’s development workflow. Developers can now build fast web experiences in less time, using Edge Functions to run dynamic content or even an entire application from the network edge without compromising performance. Built on Deno, an open source runtime, Edge Functions work out-of-the-box with new server-side features from existing web frameworks like Next.js, Nuxt, Astro, Eleventy, and SvelteKit as well as new edge-first frameworks like Hydrogen and Remix.

The recent macrotrend of edge computing has led to a wave of innovation at the network edge, but many of these new solutions are proprietary, don’t use popular programming languages, and don’t offer integrations with multiple web frameworks. As a result, edge compute has added substantial complexity to the software development lifecycle. Netlify Edge Functions were built to be an antidote, letting development teams avoid this tradeoff and, ultimately, deliver modern web experiences to market much faster.

Netlify’s suite of serverless capabilities – Netlify Functions, Background Functions, Scheduled Functions, and now Edge Functions – give developers the flexibility to apply compute where and when they need it. Netlify Edge Functions is now available in public beta.

Syncro Soft releases Oxygen XML suite 24.1

Syncro Soft, the developer of the Oxygen XML suite of products, announced the availability of version 24.1 of its XML suite of products: Oxygen XML Editor, Author, Developer, Web Author, Publishing Engine, WebHelp, PDF Chemistry, and Oxygen XML Scripting.

This release includes productivity improvements for DITA authors and publishers, including the possibility to rename referenced non-DITA resources directly in the DITA Maps Manager and performance enhancement when opening DITA maps with all of the referenced content expanded. On the DITA publishing side, the bundled DITA Open Toolkit includes improvements, and new customization possibilities were implemented for DITA to WebHelp and CSS-based PDF output.

The JSON Schema Design models has a new Palette view that makes it easy to build JSON schemas and content completion is now available for in-place editing within the diagram. Some of the existing JSON tools were also enhanced. Add-ons were a focus of this release, and a new Smart Autocomplete add-on is also available to help writers create content by providing text completions. The Oxygen XML Web Author now features a new Search side-view that makes it easier to find and replace content, support for @ mentions, and various security and component updates were also implemented.

Syncro Soft announces Oxygen Feedback version 2.0 for cloud and enterprise editions

The Oxygen Feedback commenting platform provides a simple and efficient way for your community to interact and offer feedback. It is specialized for technical documentation and can be easily integrated with Oxygen XML Editor/Author to make it more efficient for content authors to manage comments and react to community feedback. Version 2.0 of Oxygen Feedback offers new enhancements for the modern commenting platform, the most significant addition being the introduction of the organization concept in the Oxygen Feedback workflow, offering increased data security, streamlined workflows, and more customization possibilities.

The administration interface was redesigned for more efficient access to its various parts and for aggregating data and UI controls in one place. Improvements were also made to the Feedback commenting component that appears in the output (for example, the presentation of block-level comments was enhanced and there are more personalization options). This release also includes other productivity improvements, bug fixes, and security enhancements.

MACH Alliance announces MongoDB and Netlify as members

MACH Alliance announced a new category of “Enabler” membership and MongoDB and Netifly as the first two members. The new category applies to organizations that are heavily utilized by MACH organizations to deliver a MACH service or technology. They are, therefore, enabling a MACH provider but don’t offer a direct MACH solution. As such, they aren’t suited for an Alliance membership in the Vendor or System Integrator categories. While a Vendor member produces an application that enterprises can buy, an Enabler member delivers a service or technology vendors can use as part of a MACH integration.

There are two types of Enabler groups:

  • Technology Enablers are Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) that MACH vendors utilize to deliver their service. They are enabling MACH ISVs and aiding the promotion of the MACH architecture.
  • Service Enablers are service organizations that are stakeholders in MACH projects (like a specialized design agency could be) but may not have a direct involvement in implementing a MACH solution.

All Enablers are aligned to the non-functional areas of a MACH architecture. This includes, but is not limited to monitoring, data storage, cluster or container management, tracing, service meshing, API Gateways and orchestration.

Enterprise Knowledge Graph Foundation (EKGF) releases draft maturity model

Enterprise Knowledge Graph Foundation released Version 1.0 of the Enterprise Knowledge Graph Maturity Model (EKG/MM), designed to promote best practices across the knowledge graph community. Version 1.0 was created in an ongoing collaboration between experts and practitioners, and the model can be accessed or downloaded from the EKGF Website. Founding organizational members include agnos.ai, eccenca, data.world, Global IDs, Cambridge Semantics, Ontotext, Stardog, and Wizdom.

EKG/MM is designed to be the industry-standard definition and guide for the capabilities required for an enterprise knowledge graph. Intended to harmonize data from disparate sources across organizations, it can be used by business leaders, project managers, trainers, HR, legal, compliance, and finance departments, data managers, technologists, and more. It establishes standard criteria for measuring progress and sets out the practical questions that all involved stakeholders ask to ensure trust, confidence, and flexibility of data.

EKG/MM covers four essential capability areas, called “pillars,” which are grouped by the main constituencies in an enterprise: Business, Organization, Data, and Technology, each of which includes standard evaluation criteria for measuring the maturity of the design, implementation, and maintenance of an EKG.

Progress releases MOVEit 2021.1

Progress announced the latest release of Progress MOVEit, secure, automated Managed File Transfer (MFT) software that can be deployed as-a-service, on-premises and in the cloud. MOVEit provides improved support for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 compliance. This release also includes feature updates for improved levels of resilience, scalability and usability. WCAG 2.1 defines how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities including visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, language, learning, and neurological disabilities. Also added:

  • New MySQL Database – A new and more robust MySQL database engine for MOVEit Transfer and MOVEit Automation to improve availability and supportability of the deployment.
  • Simultaneous Task Runs Count Update – MOVEit Automation administrators can set the Maximum Running Tasks limit to above 100 (subject to licensing). This update ensures that customers performing enterprise-level workloads can achieve maximum throughput.
  • Support for Embedded Images in HTML Emails MOVEit Automation now supports JPEG and PNG-format embedded images in HTML-formatted emails. Task creators have the option to include images in emails when adding Send Email as a Next Action in Traditional and Synchronization tasks, Send Email as a step element in Advanced tasks, or as a destination email attachment in Traditional and Advanced tasks.

Gatsby 4 Web Framework is released

Gatsby, Inc., creators of the GatsbyJS open source project, announced the formal release of the Gatsby 4 web framework. Gatsby 4 new features include new page rendering modes, parallel query processing, and improved Gatsby Cloud preview.

With Deferred Static Generation (DSG), developers can now choose which pages to build immediately at build-time and which to defer to run-time, requiring only a single request before the content is cached and pushed to the edge. This new method of deferred rendering will open up Gatsby to a broader audience that may require more flexible approaches to page and site build times. It also unlocks the benefits of static-site generation for the largest sites.

Gatsby 4 also supports Server-Side Rendering (SSR), giving developers the choice of generating content at either build time, as with static-site generation, or at run time. With SSR, teams can now run more effective A/B tests, personalize content, and more all while still using the Gatsby framework.

Gatsby 4 also introduced support for Parallel Query Processing, allowing for a multithreaded approach to one of the most compute-intensive parts of the website build process. Gatsby Cloud utilizes multithreading and parallelism to tap into lower level APIs to offload multiple processes to speed up builds.
