Gilbane Advisor 2-21-24 — Common Crawl, data for what

This week we feature articles from Stefan Baack & Mozilla Insights, and Steve Jones.

Additional reading comes from Daniel Tunkelang, Kate Moran, Louis Rosenberg, and Matt Marshall.

News comes from Franz, Optimizely & Writer, Otter.ai, and Grammarly.

All previous issues are available at https://gilbane.com/gilbane-advisor-index

Opinion / Analysis

Training data for the price of a sandwich

It’s easy to think you know what Common Crawl is, but if you’re using some version of it as a key source for training data for generative AI, you need to do your own due diligence. This article from Stefan Baack and Mozilla Insights is a little bit repetitive so a quicker read than it first appears, and well worth it. (43 min)

https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/research/library/generative-ai-training-data/common-crawl/

Your data warehouse thinking is killing your AI ambitions

I’m not sure how many of you don’t already know the difference, but Steve Jones’ article is a useful explanation for reading, or sharing, with certain colleagues…

“The reality is that traditional data warehousing thinking and its idea of some mythical “perfect” post transactional data set only exists because historically data hasn’t been important, except for finance regulations…

The future is different, AI is critical to that future, AI that works at operational speed and can be engaged in operational decisions. This is the participation of data in business, the day-to-day, minute-to-minute running of the business, not simply reporting after the fact what went on…” (7 min)

Gilbane Advisor 2-14-24 — Analyst quadrants, Wardley maps

This week we feature articles from Sanjeev Mohan & Merv Adrian, and Simon Wardley.

Additional reading comes from Molly White, Cobus Greyling, Sissie Hsiao, Aleksandr Perevalov, Alan Morrison, and Michael Nuñez

News comes from Apple, Google, Digimarc, and Bluesky.

Opinion / Analysis

Dive deeper into Gartner’s 2023 cloud DBMS magic quadrant

Former Gartner analysts Sanjeev Mohan and Merv Adrian report on and analyze Gartner’s most recent cloud database management systems MQ. Their article is a useful short summary with some added insight into the challenges in creating MQs. And, of course you don’t need to be a client to read it. (12 min)

A good enough map

Simon Wardley is often asked about adding a new axis or legend to Wardley maps, and explains why he prefers not to. He makes a good case that adding more complexity would reduce Wardley maps usefulness as a planning tool. It is easy to see how doing so would confound participants in an offsite strategy meeting. I think his answer also serves as a good introduction to Wardley maps if you’re not familiar with them. (3 min)

Fight fire with fire? Building and testing a custom AI-powered fact checker

Chua Chin Hon has been testing available fact checking software, as well as building his own since 2021 and found them all seriously lacking. Gilbane Advisor 1-17-24 — Knowledge editing, Bayesian inference

This week we feature articles from Dhanshree Shripad Shenwai, and Stephanie Shen.

Additional reading comes from Kyle Wiggers, Caleb Sponheim, Ben Waber & Nathanael J. Fast, and Raphaël Millière & Cameron Buckner.

News comes from Typeface, OpenAI, Argo Translation, and Digimarc.

Opinion / Analysis

A comprehensive study of knowledge editing for large language models

We’re still learning how knowledge graphs and large language models might be combined to reap the benefits of their individual capabilities. Knowledge graph embeddings in LLMs are one approach, but are typically not easily modified (as they are on their own) without re-training. Dhanshree Shripad Shenwai summarizes an interesting new paper on knowledge editing activity in general, and specifically on a new approach to knowledge editing in language models that doesn’t require re-training. (3 min)

Bayesian Inference: A unified framework for perception, reasoning, and decision-making

Stephanie Shen provides an accessible and useful description of what Bayes’ Theorem is and how it works in English (minus the math), and explains why its applicability is much broader than appreciated.
