Opinion / Analysis

WebAssembly (Wasm): The future looks bright

Rather than describe the technology and its features, I will focus on why Wasm represents a technology that rights a few of the wrongs of software architecture design patterns. Said another way, Wasm resolves a handful of software development anti-patterns.

So says Chase Roberts, and Wasm is something software developers should be paying attention to. Roberts provides useful resource links, and adds his own view of WebAssembly’s value along with Amazon’s reasoning for adopting Wasm. (6 min).

Gilbane Advisor 10-12-22 — GraphQL, XR glasses

This week we feature articles by Kingsley Uyi Idehen, and Avi Bar-Zeev.

Additional reading from Emily M. Bender, Sana Behnam & Raluca Budiu, Mimi Chen, Calvin Lei, & Amit Yadav, and Stephen O’Grady.

News comes from Apollo, Optimizely, Confluent, and Elastic.

If you’ve missed any of the past 59 issues you can see them here; those, as well as all earlier issues can be found here.

Opinion / Analysis

What GraphQL brings to data access

Data remains the fundamental fuel that drives computing while emerging trends paradoxically remain an area rife with confusion. This post covers the role of GraphQL in the grand scheme of data access across the enterprise and world wide web.

Kingsley Uyi Idehen explains the role and value GraphQL brings to data access and digital transformation initiatives, and provides helpful context for IT and technical business analysts who are in the early stages of modernizing. (5 min).

The road to all-day XR glasses

Avi Bar-Zeev wrote this article in July, but it is especially relevant this week given Meta’s Connect event and announcement of their Quest Pro headset. Bar-Zeev has been involved in “about ten different XR headset projects”, and is especially interested in what it will take to deliver consumer-ready all-day wearable AR glasses — he does not think we are close. This probably won’t be a surprise to many if you, but if you want to be well-informed on this topic you need to read this. (14 min).

Opinion / Analysis

Gilbane Advisor 9-28-22 — MLOps or no, Tabu search, practical NLP

This week we feature an article from Lak Lakshmanan.

Additional reading comes from Adam Langley, Fabio Chiusano, and Jing Huang, Mingang Fu, & Minghui Liu.

News comes from Apptek & expert.ai, Fivetran, Cloudflare, and Stardog & Databricks.

If you’ve missed any of the past 57 issues you can see them here; those, as well as all earlier issues can be found here.

Opinion / Analysis

No, you don’t need MLOps

Well you might. But either way Lak Lakshmanan provides lots to think, or re-think, about. (14 min).

MLOps started from a straightforward problem statement — that the technical debt associated with ML models becomes intolerable if the models are not adjusted over time to account for changes in the environment. Since that 2015 observation, ML models and frameworks have been built that make it relatively easy to avoid the most glaring potholes in the way of the ML practitioner. However, in the past year or so, the MLOps buzzword has taken on a life of its own. At this point, most things sold as MLOps are overkill and unnecessary for most teams.

Gilbane Advisor 9-21-22 — Emergence in LLMs, SVG

This week we feature articles from Ben Dickson and Kurt Cagle.

Additional reading comes from Jack FitzGerald, Ignacio de Gregorio, and the IAB.

News comes from Adobe & Figma, Progress, Acquia, and Santa Cruz Software.

If you’ve missed any of the past 56 issues you can see them here; those, as well as all earlier issues can be found here.

Opinion / Analysis

AI scientists are studying the “emergent” abilities of large language models

I was fascinated with emergent properties in grad school, and argued for their relevance and value when “big data” became a thing. It’s good to see a disciplined look at emergence in large language models. Ben Dickson’s useful summary of a new study includes helpful background links. (6 min).

Imaging the web with Scalable Vector Graphics

Being a good data visualization artist does not necessarily require strong artistic skills, but it does depend upon understanding the tools and technologies that are out there. Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is becoming an essential technology in the data space, useful for building maps and charts that can work well on the web, creating detailed diagrams with rich metadata, and even laying the foundation for effective data presentations to clients or customers. SVG really is the foundation for intelligent graphics.

SVG has been around for a long time, but as Kurt Cagle points out in this excellent piece, it is still unknown to many and under-utilized. (11 min).

Gilbane Advisor 9-14-22 — The Merge, Internet Archive, PyTorch

Hello Reader:

This week we feature articles from Nitish Pahwa & Emma Wallenbrock, and Fred Wilson.

Additional reading: Edin Kapić, Mike Wheatley, and Webb Wright

News: Ontotext, Algolia, Optimizely, and Brave.

If you’ve missed any of the past 55 issues you can see them here; those, as well as all earlier issues can be found here.

Opinion / Analysis

Could the Internet Archive go out like Napster?

You may recall the lawsuit for “willful mass copyright infringement” filed against the Internet Archive for its National Emergency Library by a number of major publishers in early 2020 (Hachette v. Internet Archive). This was/is a case where it is difficult to find a true villain. A number of authors, who had the most to lose have dropped support for the suit, which is still active. Nitish Pahwa & Emma Wallenbrock provide a useful update, with enough background for anyone who needs it. Their title is to grab your attention, but they acknowledge such a fear may be overblown. (9 min).

The Merge

The, apparently imminent, Ethereum merge that is. To the extent we cover crypto our focus is on the potential of blockchains for platform and enterprise applications rather than fintech or fads. The Ethereum merge is important for crypto in general. AVC’s Fred Wilson has a short explanation of why the merge is so important. As a VC whose family and company “have large holdings in ETH and other crypto assets”, he is both knowledgeable and an interested party. (In terms of disclosure, I have a truly minuscule amount of ETH.) (< 3 min).

Stable Diffusion is a really big deal

Stable diffusion was released a couple of weeks ago and has generated a lot of excitement as an alternative to DALL·E and other image generation tools.
