Inxight Announces Categorizer

Inxight Software, Inc. announced the immediate availability of Inxight Categorizer. Categorizer is an application that efficiently and automatically classifies unstructured information, such as web pages, e-mail, word processing documents, presentations and text, into pre-defined categories to significantly increase the quality and accuracy of online searches. Iona Delivers iPortal Server

IONA shipped the final element of the iPortal Suite by delivering the iPortal Server. IONA’s iPortal Server is the web-facing component of an enterprise portal that aggregates back-end applications and manages content to provide customers, suppliers, partners and employees with a single point of access to all of an organization’s business processes and software applications. The iPortal Server ships with IONA’s iPortal Application Server and Orbix 2000 offerings, providing an integrated J2EE-, SOAP-, XML- and CORBA-compliant environment. Further integration with IONA’s iPortal OS/390 Server and the rest of the iPortal Suite enables organizations to build and deploy portals that leverage mainframe, ERP and proprietary enterprise applications. The iPortal Server provides a structured web design process for building, deploying and managing portal applications. By separating content, presentation, business logic and data layers, the iPortal Server’s XML/XSL-based design ensures that web content is architecturally separated from the presentation layer, enabling new business logic or protocols to be added without affecting data or web content, unless desired. Open Text Unveils Corporate Portal Strategy

Open Text Corporation announced the next evolution of BASIS and Techlib-the document collection and library automation components of the Livelink product family- myBASIS, the collaborative portal interface. The customizable portal framework of myBASIS allows users to organize multiple information sources. With the interface, library users can define on a single page, different areas to deliver internal news channels, external news feeds, content subscriptions and favorite URLS. myBASIS also provides search access to predefined resources like the organization’s Techlib library catalog, any BASIS or Livelink repository or content from b2bScene.com’s Content Services (www.b2bScene.com/contentservices). Users personalize their own page according to individual need and preference. The optional development toolkit can be used to configure new content choices for internal and external sources. This announcement follows last year’s release of the Livelink Cataloged Library, an integration of the Techlib OPAC (Online Patron Access Catalog) with Open Text’s Livelink collaborative enterprise application. Continuing Open Text’s strategy to advance an organization’s ability to organize multiple information sources, a second-generation Web OPAC is planned. Oracle Ships Internet File System

Oracle Corp. announced availability of Oracle Internet File System (iFS), which combines the simplicity of the Windows file system with the powerful information management features of Oracle8i. Now with iFS, companies can easily manage all their content in a single repository, content which is currently scattered across PC desktops, document management systems and web sites. This innovation yields tremendous gains in efficiencies for e-Businesses faced with the mounting problem of managing the variety and high-volume of content — not just data — being generated by the Internet, business-to-business exchanges, e-commerce and enterprise portals. In spite of the proliferation of the Internet and tremendous innovation within the software industry, the file system has been virtually unchanged in the past 20 years. Oracle iFS is a file system designed for the Internet. It brings order to today’s document chaos, supporting the storage and management of over 150 different file types, including documents created using XML. Independent software vendors (ISVs), especially XML and image document management application vendors, are embracing iFS as a means to innovate their applications rapidly delivering advances in functionality which were for all intents and purposes impossible to achieve under the primitive architectural constraints of the Windows file system. IONA & Others Submit SOAP Specification to W3C

IONA Technologies announced that the W3C has acknowledged its submission of the latest version of the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) specification. IONA was joined by Ariba, Commerce One, Compaq, DevelopMentor, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Lotus Development Corp, Microsoft, SAP and UserLand Software (most of whom had their own similarly worded press release) in submitting the specification and proposing the formation of a working group in the area of XML-based protocols. SOAP is an XML-based interoperability protocol that links applications and services together via the Internet, regardless of operating system, object model or programming language. IONA’s iPortal Suite is a platform for integrating software applications and transforming them into B2B enterprise portals, which are unified points of access connecting an organization’s corporate business to the web. The iPortal Suite’s support for SOAP facilitates direct B2B interaction by enabling organizations to connect their enterprise portals to the e-business systems of their customers, suppliers and partners. IONA will continue to collaborate with the other submitters on the development and enhancement of SOAP to help it become the industry-standard mechanism that enables organizations to define enterprise portal services and transparently connect them with other enterprise portals. Multicosm Announces Maximizer Line of Portal Enhancement Products

Multicosm Ltd announced its Maximizer line of products for Web portals, extranets and enterprise intranets. Using Multicosm’s text analysis technology, Portal Maximizer customers can crawl any Web site and determine which pages are related to the various content that a customer chooses for its portal. It then automatically creates links to those pages that can be easily accessed from one central location. Customers with existing portals can both expand the reach of their portal, and significantly lower the cost of managing their sites with Portal Maximizer. Intranet Maximizer builds on the technology used in Portal Maximizer, and enhances it with integrated summarization, search, monitoring, and expertise identification features. Portal Maximizer can crawl vast amounts of Web content and identify the important concepts, product and people’s names on those sites. These names and concepts are then used as the basis of linking related pages together, whether on the same site or to external sites. Those links are stored and maintained separately from the HTML documents, making the tedious task of link management significantly easier and less time consuming. By inserting links “on-the-fly” as Web pages are served to the browser, the number of links that must be inserted by hand into each page on the site are dramatically reduced. Pages can be added to the site more quickly, as they are automatically analyzed and cross-referenced with the other pages. In addition, companies running Web portals have complete editorial control over not only what links appear on which pages, but over the links themselves because they are fully editable. XML Portal Gains Legacy Data Access Via WRQ-DataChannel Partnership

WRQ, Inc. and DataChannel, Inc. announced a partnership designed to provide enterprises investing in e-business the ability to extend the usability of legacy data in IBM mainframe, AS/400, UNIX and VAX host applications using XML as their e-business data exchange platform. Through this partnership, enterprises can use WRQ Apptrieve application mining solution to selectively expose valuable data in legacy applications for integration into DataChannel’s XML-based enterprise information portal. WRQ Apptrieve makes it easy to mine legacy applications, preserving their key business logic, and exposing the data via standard object formats such as Javabeans or COM for integration with Web applications — without re-engineering the underlying business processes or host system. Plumtree and Interwoven Deliver B2B Exchange Through Cross-Syndication

Plumtree Software announced a partnership with Interwoven, Inc. The two companies have agreed to co-market and co-sell a joint solution that helps customers share Web and enterprise resources between corporate Web sites and corporate portals. The joint solution expands the number of enterprise application components, Internet services, and Web content that can be syndicated to and from the Plumtree Corporate Portal, and managed by Interwoven TeamSite. Plumtree’s new syndication technology allows Plumtree Portal Gadgets to be widely exported to partners and suppliers. Together, these complementary technologies allow customers to maximize the effectiveness of all Web and enterprise application resources across the extended enterprise. Plumtree Portal Gadgets represent dynamic enterprise application components or Internet services, which can, for example, be used to display sales figures from a database, inventory levels from a supply chain application, unread messages from an e-mail system, or market news from the Internet. Plumtree can now, through its syndication technology, periodically export gadgets as XML objects to TeamSite. TeamSite can then manage each gadget update through a workflow approval process.
