Content management is a broad topic that refers to the management of unstructured or semi-structured content as a standalone system or a component of another system. Varieties of content management systems (CMS) include: web content management (WCM), enterprise content management (ECM), component content management (CCM), and digital asset management (DAM) systems. Content management systems are also now widely marketed as Digital Experience Management (DEM or DXM, DXP), and Customer Experience Management (CEM or CXM) systems or platforms, and may include additional marketing technology functions.

Antenna House Announces XSL Formatter V3.3

Antenna House, Inc. announced that XSL Formatter V3.3, their newest XSL-FO processor, is now available. As an option Antenna House is offering with V3.3 the ability to output SVG files. The SVG output option supports the creation of SVG, SVG Tiny and SVG Basic. V3.3 also offers improvements to the GUI and many new enhancements that have been implemented through FO extensions. These include: SVG Output using the new SVG Output Option, Text and Property search in GUI, Printer marks can now be output, PDF Annotations can now be output, The Radii of box corners and box shadows can be specified for borders, Column setting within the fo:block-container is now available, The axf:footnote-position property has been extended, Arrangement of footnotes can now be specified by axf:footnote-align and axf:footnote-stacking, Footnotes duplicated in the same page can now be deleted, Base 14 fonts can now be embedded in PDF output, Spot color is now supported, JPEG2000 is now supported, and a raster image can now be down sampled. Partners will be sent new license keys and information for downloading V3.3 for their complimetary copy.

Lionbridge to Acquire Bowne Global Solutions

Lionbridge Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: LIOX) announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Bowne Global Solutions, a division of Bowne & Co., Inc.(NYSE: BNE), for at least $180 million (excluding cash received), in a combination of cash and common stock. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2005 and is expected to be accretive to Lionbridge earnings within the first full quarter of combined operations, excluding restructuring and related expenses. Both Lionbridge and Bowne Global Solutions (BGS) provide globalization services that enable organizations to release products and content that meet the linguistic, technical and cultural requirements of customers, partners and employees worldwide. BGS’ worldwide presence, language expertise and diversified customer base will complement Lionbridge’s language technology and offshore development and testing outsourcing services. Bowne will hold one director seat on the Lionbridge Board of Directors. The closing of the acquisition is subject to customary conditions and approvals. The approval of the stockholders of Lionbridge and Bowne will not be required to consummate the proposed acquisition. Simian Releases Sitellite 4.2 Enterprise Content Management System

Simian Systems Inc. announced the release of Sitellite 4.2, the latest version of their content management system software. Central to the development of Sitellite 4.2 was the need to make existing Sitellite features, such as versioning, workflow, and access control, easier to implement and to manage, so that websites could more easily take advantage of these critical features. Sitellite 4.2 includes Xed 2, a What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get
(WYSIWYG) editor that embeds directly into Sitellite in web browsers, allowing non-technical content creators to build complex web pages without technical knowledge. Xed 2 includes built-in spell checking, link and image wizards, and a “box chooser” for embedding dynamic content such as the latest headlines or events listings directly into any web page. Also included are an advanced performance cache manager, an activity log for administrators to see exactly who did what and when, a revamped workflow internals and workflow management interface, refined user privileges for greater access control restrictions, improved website member services providing out-of-the-box member portal/extranet capabilities, a new template manager for easier website design control as well as built-in tools for standards compliance testing, including Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) and Section 508 testing, and more. The Sitellite 4.2 Content Management System is available immediately in both Professional and Enterprise editions.

Alfresco Previews Open Source Content Management System

Alfresco, a provider of open source enterprise content management software, announced the immediate availability of a technology preview of the Alfresco open source content repository and portal integrations. An enterprise-scale content repository, JSR-168 portlets for managing and using content, and a Common Internet File System (CIFS) interface that provides Microsoft Windows file system compatibility are included in this release. Alfresco developed the system using the latest Java technologies, including JBoss Application Server 4.0, JBoss Portal 2.0, Spring 1.2, Hibernate 3.0, MyFaces 1.0, Lucene 1.4 and Java 1.5. The preview release of the Alfresco system provides enterprise content management capabilities in JSR-168 compatible portals and JBoss Portal 2.0. Adopting aspect-oriented programming as a foundation for adaptability, the Alfresco system uses the Spring Framework. To provide easy access to the content management repository for end users, Alfresco has included support for the Common Internet File System standard. CIFS allows users to tap into the Alfresco repository as though they were accessing a shared drive, permitting off-line synchronization, drive mounting and access from any application. A rules-based engine provides automatic versioning, classification and control eliminating the manual work associated with content management systems. X1 Releases X1 Enterprise Edition Desktop Search

X1 Technologies, Inc. announced the availability of X1 Enterprise Edition, an enterprise desktop search solution fine-tuned to help business users access and act upon the information they need, no matter where it resides in the organization. X1 Enterprise Edition provides a comprehensive view of both user-managed and corporate-managed information assets. This “IT-managed” software solution preserves control and security of data, allowing end users to find information within the purview of existing company privacy and security policies. X1 Enterprise Edition combines the X1 Desktop Search interface with integrated network content connectors. X1 Content Connectors enable users to interact with the core functionality of underlying applications, such as finding data in shared file folders, email messages, attachments, and contacts from both locally cached and server-hosted email systems, including Microsoft Outlook/Exchange and Outlook Express, Mozilla Thunderbird, Qualcomm Eudora, Netscape Mail, and Lotus Notes/Domino. With X1 Enterprise Edition, users can preview search results even if the original application doesn’t reside on their computer. Now available, X1 Enterprise Edition starts at $7,500 per year, which includes the Enterprise Server, Server Manager, Content Connectors, Deployment Manager, and the ability to support thousands of desktop, browser-based, or mobile clients. X1 Enterprise Edition provides centralized server deployment options with a browser-based client, supports more than 370 types of files, and is compatible with many email systems. ClearStory Systems Webinar

I spoke today as part of a ClearStory Systems webinar on rich media management. You can get a PDF of my slides here. My presentation is based heavily on our recent white paper, Rich Media Management and Business Agility.
During John’s presentation, he mentioned how Sony and other customers are using the ClearStory technology to bring more rich media applications to the Web. I like this site, which markets stock video footage from Sony Pictures.

Pendragon Releases Pendragon Forms Enterprise Edition 5.0

Pendragon Software announced a new, multi-platform version of Pendragon Forms Enterprise Edition. Pendragon Forms Enterprise Edition is a business forms solution that synchronizes PDAs and smartphones to enterprise databases. Using Version 5.0, companies can create data collection applications for mobile devices running on both Palm OS and Windows Mobile for Pocket PC platforms. Companies can install the Pendragon Forms Enterprise Edition on their own Windows servers. The software is based on server technologies including Active Server Pages, Microsoft SQL Server, ODBC and Pendragon SyncServer. The centralized management feature enables IT managers to determine precisely how forms and data are deployed to devices when they synchronize. Pendragon Forms Enterprise Edition is priced at $2,995 for a 50-user license, complete with software modules for the server, handheld devices and networked PCs.
