CMS Watch Releases New Edition of Enterprise Portals Report
10/24/2006

The new "Open-Source Edition" compares 5 open source portal vendors head to head: eXo, Jetspeed, JBoss, Liferay, and Plone. According to the report, open source enterprise portal packages are seeing substantial uptake in the marketplace, but vary substantially in features and usability, and tend to target a limited set of simple scenarios. CMS Watch has found prospective portal customers taking a longer look at open source portals as well. Those customers are finding that open source alternatives can provide an acceptable platform for simple standards-compliant portlets, but may not yet be capable for more complex transactional, process-oriented scenarios. Other Report findings include: Open source portal packages tend to excel at scenarios emphasizing web application development and simpler informational portals. They tend not to fit well for more complex, transactional or process-oriented portals and also offer less in the way of pre-packaged integration capabilities; All the major open source portal platforms are based on Java, with the exception of Plone, a Python-based alternative. There are no significant Microsoft-based open source portal packages to challenge Office SharePoint; Community size and vibrancy varies substantially among open source portal projects. Established projects like Liferay can boast highly dynamic communities, while Apache Jetspeed and Red Hat JBoss Portal have yet to gain significant developer traction; Sun is in the midst of releasing its portal offering into open source. Sun's portal is now free of charge, but not all of the source code has been made available yet. The new Edition of the Enterprise Portals Report provides 8- to 16-page comparative product surveys of 15 enterprise portal products as well as information about 6 other packages across 3 product categories. Vendors covered include ATG (NASDAQ:ARTG), BEA (NASDAQ:BEAS), Broadvision (OTCC:BVSN), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL), Vignette (NASDAQ:VIGN), IBM (NYSE:IBM), Red Hat/JBoss (NASDAQ:RHAT), SAP (NYSE:SAP), Sun (NASDAQ:SUNW), Apache, eXo, Liferay, and Plone/Zope. Ipedo Announces Support for Embarcadero ER/Studio & CA AllFusion ERwin Data Modeler
10/3/2006

Ipedo announced support for Embarcadero ER/Studio and CA AllFusion ERwin Data Modeler, two leading data modeling solutions. This support adds third-party data modeling capabilities to Ipedo's enterprise information integration (EII) server, allowing organizations to leverage existing logical data models in Ipedo deployments, and to document Ipedo views for use in other applications. Data architects can now leverage the top-down modeling capabilities that ER/Studio and ERwin offer in EII deployments using Ipedo XIP. An organization's logical data models can be used to generate the corresponding structures in Ipedo. Modeling tools simply create a set of virtual tables in Ipedo, using standard SQL DDL commands, which are then used to create EII views. Companies moving to SOA can also use this capability to automate the conversion of existing relational data models to XML Web Services. ER/Studio and ERwin can also reverse engineer views in Ipedo XIP. A set of virtual tables and views built using Ipedo's bottom-up modeling capabilities appear as standard relational tables, which ER/Studio and ERwin can read to recreate a corresponding logical data model. These models can then be shared and managed in a standard metadata repository, allowing organizations to document EII view models for re-use or compliance purposes. http://www.ipedo.com
