Content management is a broad topic that refers to the management of unstructured or semi-structured content as a standalone system or a component of another system. Varieties of content management systems (CMS) include: web content management (WCM), enterprise content management (ECM), component content management (CCM), and digital asset management (DAM) systems. Content management systems are also now widely marketed as Digital Experience Management (DEM or DXM, DXP), and Customer Experience Management (CEM or CXM) systems or platforms, and may include additional marketing technology functions.

Adobe Ships Document Server & Reader Extensions

Adobe Systems Incorporated announced the availability of Adobe Document Server and Adobe Document Server for Reader Extensions. Adobe Document Server lets customers dynamically assemble customized Adobe PDF files from a variety of data sources to create technical manuals, electronic forms, contracts, business reports and invoices. The software enables enterprises to tap into existing ERP, CRM and CMS systems, document management systems, and databases to generate custom business communications in PDF. Adobe Document Server also supports Extensible Style Language Formatting Objects (XSL-FO). Adobe Document Server for Reader Extensions offers the ability to assign usage rights to Adobe PDF documents and forms. Once these rights have been assigned, users of Acrobat Reader version 5.1 will be able to save, fill and route PDF forms, add electronic sticky notes for comments or questions, and digitally sign completed forms. Adobe Document Server pricing starts at US$20,000 per CPU. ebXML Collaboration Protocol Profile Ratified as OASIS Standard

The OASIS interoperability consortium announced that its members have approved the ebXML Collaboration Protocol Profile and Agreement (CPPA) v2.0 as an OASIS Open Standard, a status that signifies the highest level of ratification. ebXML CPPA defines business partners’ technical capabilities and documents agreements between partners, enabling organizations to securely engage in electronic business collaboration. ebXML CPPA was developed by Commerce One, Cyclone Commerce, E2open, Hewlett-Packard Company, IBM, Intel, IONA, Mercator, SAP, SeeBeyond, Sterling Commerce, Sun Microsystems, Sybase, TIBCO, Vitria, webMethods, and other members of the OASIS ebXML Collaboration Protocol Profile and Agreement Technical Committee. In related news, the ebXML OASIS UN/CEFACT Joint Marketing Team published version 1.0 of the ebXML Adoption Update, a listing of ebXML implementations, projects, products, and industry initiatives from around the world. Inxight Enhances SAP Alliance & Adds 7 Languages to LinquistX

Inxight Software, Inc. announced that it has enhanced its alliance with SAP AG through an expanded software licensing agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, twenty-three languages within Inxight’s LinguistX Platform, a natural language text processing system, will now be made available within mySAP Enterprise Portal. Inxight also announced it has added seven languages to its LinguistX portfolio, bringing the total to twenty-three. Languages that SAP has added include Russian, Polish, Czech, Greek, Hungarian, Romanian and Turkish. Additional languages to be made available within mySAP Enterprise Portal include Hebrew and Thai. www.inxight.com

Microsoft Announces Solution for Intranets 1.5 & Groove Partner Solution

Microsoft Corp. announced the availability of its newest version of the Microsoft Solution for Intranets (MSI). With the Microsoft Solution for Intranets 1.5, Microsoft is extending collaboration opportunities through companies such as Groove Networks Inc., which will release within the next 30 days a partner solution offering that integrates with the MSI technology. The Groove Networks software integrates Groove Workspace with SharePoint Team Services. The MSI 1.5 improves on the 1.0 platform with several upgrades that promote collaboration and ease of use. Chief among these is the addition of Microsoft Producer, which allows a content author to create rich-media presentations (audio or video synchronized with PowerPoint slides and other HTML elements) for on-demand viewing. Other additions include streamlined integration between the MSI 1.5 and Microsoft Content Management Server and the installation of the Microsoft .NET Framework on all servers in the solution, enabling the development of collaborative Web services. www.microsoft.com

TextCafe Version 3.0 Supports SVG

Texterity, Inc. announced TextCafe Version 3.0, providing conversion of PDF into SVG pages, XML-based table of contents, and XML document search indexes. SVG provides customers with an XML-based representation of pages that are identical to the original printed page. With TextCafe 3.0, publishers can publish on-line and off-line versions of materials using standard web browsers for Windows, Macintosh and other platforms. TextCafe 3.0 provides: Automatic conversion from PDF to SVG pages, page-based word lists for indexed searches, and structural Table of Contents in XML; the ability to view SVG pages within any HTML page, using the Adobe SVGViewer; support for embedded fonts, including SVG standard font drawing instructions or Adobe Compact Embedded Fonts (CEF); atomatic extraction and optimization of all raster and bitmap images into PNG or JPEG formats; translation of line-drawingd or images into SVG vector formats; and matching between reflowable XML/OEB output, word indexes and SVG pages, enabling word highlighting and relevancy searching. www.texterity.com

Xythos Announces Updates & OEM Deal with Stellent

Xythos Software announced updraded WebFile Server and WebFile Client products. The company’s Intellitach technology automatically replaces email file attachments with secure links (URLs). The company’s WebFile Server introduces secure file sharing within portal environments including the Plumtree Corporate Portal, Computer Associates’ Clever Path, and Blackboard’s Community Portal for education. When used in combination with email applications such as Lotus Notes or Microsoft Outlook the new Xythos products migrate historically inaccessible file information from PCs and department level servers into Internet file servers. Xythos software is designed for the everyday user not traditionally served by enterprise content management applications. Xythos products deliver file sharing tools that work inside the applications that users already know, making file sharing familiar even when those applications aren’t WebDAV compatible. Xythos also announced that Stellent has licensed their technology.

Stellent Content Management V. 6 Now in Six Languages

Stellent, Inc. announced Stellent Content Management Version 6 is now localized in English, French, German, Japanese, Korean and Spanish, enabling users to interact with the Stellent system in their native languages. Users can choose their language preference when they create user profiles in the Stellent Content Management system, and the Stellent Content Server then automatically presents the interface in the preferred language. Stellent also announced new content contribution functionalities. The new Stellent Drive module enables users to contribute content to offline folders and extends Stellent’s WebDAV content contribution functionality to non-WebDAV applications, such as Framemaker, Photoshop, AutoCAD and Microsoft Office `97. This extension simplifies the content check-in and check-out process by enabling users of non-WebDAV applications to contribute content directly to Stellent and also access content managed by Stellent. www.stellent.com

IBM & Vignette Expand Strategic Alliance

Vignette Corp. announced an expansion of its existing strategic alliance with IBM Corp. to include solutions that will help companies better manage the content of their corporate intranets. Under terms of the expanded agreement, Vignette has become a certified Web content management business partner for IBM’s Dynamic Workplaces initiative. The new initiative is designed to offer a broad set of intranet-based collaborative technologies, such as e-meetings, e-learning, eHR and instant messaging. As a part of this announcement, Vignette is debuting Vignette for IBM Dynamic Workplaces, a configuration of its content management application that is tightly linked with IBM’s Dynamic Workplaces offering.
