DataChannel announced the next-generation of its Solution Software for Enterprise Information Portals (EIP). DataChannel has developed its enhanced EIP application server based entirely on XML. The server includes XPages, an implementation of a transformation engine that converts data from heterogeneous sources into XML-ready schema. This transformation engine directly addresses the challenges of data interoperability across and beyond the Enterprise. SQRIBE Technologies announced that its ReportMart Enterprise Information Portal will use XML as the open standard for integrating enterprise portals with third-party applications and data sources. The announcement, which expands on ReportMart’s existing built-in XML support addresses the corporate requirement for a neutral interchange format between disparate data sources — such as ERP systems, data warehouses, business intelligence applications, desktop applications, and live Web feeds. SQRIBE’s expanded use of XML will enable corporate intranet developers and IT organizations to accelerate portal deployments by ensuring portals will integrate within existing IT infrastructures. For example the XML interface will be used to support the process of moving large quantities of reporting information into SQRIBE’s portal environment from external sources such as ERP systems. XML is also the mechanism for mass replication of metadata information, such as account, group, and category hierarchies that reside in ERP systems and other enterprise applications. PeopleSoft Inc. announced they have selected Microsoft technologies and standards to develop key elements of the PeopleSoft Business Network (PSBN), including PSBN’s role-based Enterprise Portal and a series of Community Applications. PSBN is an electronic business network of Internet business solutions that will deliver a broad range of relevant information, including applications and content, to a large number of end users through an Enterprise Portal. Announced in November 1998 and scheduled for availability later this year. The two companies also announced that PeopleSoft plans to collaborate with Microsoft on the XML-based BizTalk framework for application integration and e-commerce. www.peoplesoft.com
Brio Technology Inc., a supplier of Business intelligence software, said yesterday it will buy Sqribe Technologies, a provider of enterprise portal software. The price is about $270 million. The companies said they will integrate their product lines. Upon the closing of the transaction, former Brio shareholders will hold approximately 55% of the combined company, with former Sqribe shareholders holding approximately 45%. www.brio.com, www.sqribe.com
Epicentric, Inc., publicly previewed its portal solution enabling companies to build custom enterprise portals for intranets, extranets and the Internet at Demo ’99. The Epicentric solution delivers ownership of corporate portals from a hosting, branding and design perspective. The company will provide its portal solution as either an enterprise server or hosted service and also license aggregation technology to vertical portal sites on the Web. Epicentric expects to ship its portal server in the second quarter of 1999. Beta sites include enterprise customers such as the United States Postal Service (USPS), BAAN and Philips that will be deploying the product server in both intranet and extranet settings. Epicentric’s technology takes advantage of emerging XML-based standards such as the Document Object Model (DOM) and allows the server to easily communicate with any existing information source. Additionally, Epicentric is a member of the W3C and the Information & Content Exchange (ICE) Advisory Council, a standards body launched to facilitate content exchange. www.epicentric.com
