SEC to Ease SOX Reporting

A story on page 1 of the Nov 10 Wall Street Journal reports that the SEC is re-evaluting interpretation of Section 404 of the SOX rule, which dictates internal review and external auditing of financial reporting systems.
Citing pressure from “the nation’s business lobby,” the SEC is taking steps to allow a “more flexible reading,” and intends to “propose guidance . . . to help companies and auditors interpret Section 404 in a way likely to save them time and money.” The new guidance is expected next month.
See “Business Wins Its Battle to Ease A Costly Sarbanes-Oxley Rule” for details.

The Technology Acquisition Conundrum

Leonor is quoted extensively in “The Rocket Science of Technology Procurement,” a piece on fallout from a recent bid process at NASA. Leonor addresses a few of the larger issues associated with acquisition, such as the trade-off between going with existing solutions versus introducing new technology. On the one hand, incumbents have established relationships and “processes [that are] deeply entrenched in a buyer’s infrastructure.” On the other hand, alternative solutions can bring new and different capabilities that enable true innovation in addition to improved efficiencies.
Leonor also points out that while choices may be made jointly by business and IT, the two groups are not always in agreement. A timely observation, as more and more suppliers of content technologies add new features that make it possible for business users to bypass IT and control content themselves.
Strategies for dealing effectively with the tensions surrounding technology acquisition will be one of the topics that we’ll cover during the analyst debate on Wed, Nov 29, at Gilbane Boston 2006. Web Seminar Today: Take Online Channels to the Next Level

Just a quick reminder that today we’re moderating a web panel discussion on content, relevancy, and online customer experience. The event takes place at 1:00 pm ET.
Topics include aligning business objectives and customer goals, segmenting audiences and creating personas, presenting content that’s tailored to those personas and steps in the customer life cycle, and accessing information in the age of relevancy.
Panelists are Jeff Ernst, FatWire; Bryant Shea, Molecular; and Paul Sonderegger, Endeca. If the actual event is half as fun and enjoyable as our dry run, the webinar will be one of the best hours you’ve spent this week. Special thanks to FatWire for hosting.
Register here, and join us later today.

Just What Does “Web Customer Experience” Mean, Anyway?

As analysts and consultants, we see the phrase “web customer experience” everywhere — in vendor briefings, supplier positioning statements, service offerings from integrators, RFPs issued by enterprise adopters. With such ubiquitous use, just what does “web customer experience” mean these days?
We all have web experiences when buying music, paying bills, booking travel, accessing our corporate intranets. We all have stories about experiences that are good, bad, and just plain ugly. What separates the experiences that satisfy from those that don’t?

On October 12, we address this issue in a web event on content relevancy as the core requirement for good online experiences. In a panel discussion format, Jeff Ernst (FatWire), Bryant Shea (Molecular), and Paul Sonderegger (Endeca) talk about what it takes to serve up relevant content that satisfies customers while meeting the needs of the business.

We’re also exploring content relevancy in a Gilbane Boston session entitled “Creating High-Value Customer Experience” on Thursday, November 30.

Whether you’re attending the webinar or the conference, we invite your questions and comments on good online experiences and the role of content. Send mail to mary@gilbane.com or post a comment to this entry.

Cambridge MA, September 19, 2006. The Gilbane Group today announced they have launched a blog for Chief Technology Officers (CTOs) who are involved in enterprise content applications, whether vendor, integrator, or enterprise implementer. The content technology CTO Blog is hosted by the Gilbane Group as a service to the content and information technology community. The purpose of the blog is to facilitate ongoing discussion and debate on technologies, approaches and architectures relevant to enterprise content applications.

CTOs have a wealth of critical information about technologies that is not always accessible to enterprise customers. CTOs also have demanding jobs, and have limited time available to meet with each other with customers, or with other industry influencers. This blog is intended to encourage communication both between vendor CTOs and between enterprise customer CTOs and vendor CTOs. All CTOs are invited to participate.

“Long gone are the days when analyst firms, marketing departments and VARs had a lock on product technology information channels. But it is still a challenge for many companies to find the in-depth technical expertise they need for strategic IT decisions.” said Frank Gilbane, CEO, Gilbane Group. “Our mission has always been to facilitate dialogue about information technologies between technologists, implementers, customers, investors, analysts and consultants. The CTO blog is a great addition to our open information community approach and complements our conferences, analyst blog, website, and other activities.”

Two CTO Blog charter authors have already contributed posts during the pre-launch testing. John Newton, a Documentum founder and now founder and CTO of Alfresco, provides a provocative take on “content management 2.0”. Vern Imrich, CTO of Percussion Software, shares insights into the apparent contradiction of content management technology moving up and down the technology infrastructure stack at the same time. See  (CTO Blog posts are integrated in with the Gilbane Blog) to see the full posts, a list of topic areas, to comment, or learn more.

Additional charter authors of the Content Technology CTO Blog include:

  • Bill Cava, Ektron
  • James Gonthier, Refresh
  • Jason Hunter, Mark Logic
  • Vern Imrich, Percussion
  • John Newton, Alfresco
  • Bjørn Olstad, FAST
  • Eric Severson, Flatirons Solutions
  • Carl Sutter, CrownPeak

Vern Imrich, CTO of Percussion Software, said, “This is an ideal time for the Gilbane Group to launch their Content Technology CTO Blog. The content management market is maturing in a variety of different directions, and organizations are looking closely at how they can apply content management to everything from basic storage and retrieval to new content-driven applications used to produce measurable line-of-business returns. Giving CTOs a place to comment on the issues surrounding this dynamic market will provide significant value. I’m happy to participate and eager to hear what my peers have to say.”

Tune Into Gilbane, Part 1

Our conference in Boston served up evidence that companies are beginning to get serious about leveraging their content, moving beyond managing, storing, and retaining it. “Content in context” was a theme in the analyst panel and in the sessions on adoption of DITA and sustainable content strategies. Frank and Hummingbird CMO Andrew Pery discussed the issues in “Intellectual Capital@Work: Finding the Added Value in Your Enterprise Content” during a web seminar on December 6. Listen in here:
