Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq: ADBE) announced plans to release source code for Adobe Flex as open source. This initiative will let developers worldwide participate in the growth of the framework for building cross-operating system rich Internet applications (RIAs) for the Web and enabling new Apollo applications for the desktop. The open source Flex SDK and documentation will be available under the Mozilla Public License (MPL). Available since June 2006, the free Adobe Flex SDK includes the technologies developers need to build effective Flex applications, including the MXML compiler and the ActionScript 3.0 libraries that make up the Flex framework. This announcement expands on Adobe’s contribution of source code for the ActionScript Virtual Machine to the Mozilla Foundation under the Tamarin project, the use of the open source WebKit engine in the “Apollo” project, and the release of the full PDF 1.7 specification for ISO standardization. Using the MPL for open sourcing Flex will allow full and free access to source code. Developers will be able to freely download, extend, and contribute to the source code for the Flex compiler, components and application framework. Adobe also will continue to make the Flex SDK and other Flex products available under their existing commercial licenses, allowing both new and existing partners and customers to choose the license terms that best suit their requirements. Starting this summer with the pre-release versions of the next release of the Flex product line, code named “Moxie,” Adobe will post daily software builds of the Flex SDK on a public download site with a public bug database. The release of open source Flex under the MPL will occur in conjunction with the final release of Moxie, currently scheduled for the second half of 2007. http://www.adobe.com/go/opensourceflex

Atex has taken the next step towards offering new and complementary delivery means for media content by partnering with Ektron, Inc. of Nashua, New Hampshire, to offer its CMS400.NET system for use in the media industry. The CMS400.NET system is integrated with Atex’s Editorial Content Management systems to allow flow of information to the Web site and from the Web site into the print publication system. Editors and content managers are able to make use of multiple publication delivery means, using print, online, e-mail, SMS messaging, vidcasts and podcasts. The Atex integration of CMS400.NET utilizes Web services to allow content, which could exist in many formats, text, audio, video, flash or images, to move easily between the two systems, along with its associated metadata. XFA combines the data and capabilities of XML with rich presentation capabilities for multi-channel delivery, including PDF. Adobe LiveCycle Designer enables the creation of dynamic XFA form templates. This software supports XML data and schema bindings, enhances document security with template designs for digital signatures and enables compliance with government accessibility requirements for online forms. With it, anyone with Adobe Reader software can participate in secure, interactive data capture processes that extend to customers, partners or suppliers. Day Software (SWX:DAYN)(OTC:DYIHY) announced the availability of Communiqué 4.2 and Content Repository Extreme (CRX) 1.3.1, a native JCR (JSR 170) standard compliant enterprise content management solution and Java Content Repository. These latest releases of Communiqué and CRX contain enhancements that are directed toward an even better usability for authors, administrators, and developers, and improvements in scalability and performance. Specific enhancements include active clustering of author instances, SAP portal integration and synchronization with Day’s connector products providing an easy start to connect to third party repositories by using JCR connectors. Based on the cluster functionality in the CRX 1.3.1 release, Communiqué 4.2 supports active clustering of author instances. With this it is possible to have several Communiqué servers combined to form a cluster and provide one Communiqué Author instance. As an additional language for the user interface, Japanese is now maintained in the product. Portal Adapter for SAP Portal 6.0 allows integration of Communiqué content and functionality into a SAP Portal environment. Out-of-the-box portlets can be used to display Communiqué managed content that is dynamically associated to the iView. The Advanced interface for power users and developers should be familiar to anyone who has used the software application. Content Server 7 includes support for tags. Tags are user defined, so each user can choose tags that make sense to them. The same tag can be applied to different types of content, allowing you to group content any way you want, such as by campaign, project, or day of the week. Multilingual support is built directly into the data model, so that any content can be translated into multiple languages. Content Server 7 now has enhanced full-text search. Web content management vendor Sitecore has incorporated support for translation middleware from Clay Tablet, allowing Sitecore’s customers to professionally translate their web sites into any number of languages, and keep them updated as content changes. Salesforce.com (NYSE:CRM) introduced Salesforce Content, an expansion of its platform and application strategy for managing and sharing all business information on demand. Apex Content, a major new extension to the Salesforce platform, will enable the creation of content-based applications. Salesforce ContentExchange, a new on-demand application built on the new platform technologies, will enable customers to manage their documents and other unstructured data on demand as they manage their structured data within the existing Salesforce CRM applications. Apex Content and Salesforce ContentExchange will be based on technology acquired from Koral Technologies. Salesforce.com acquired Koral in March 2007. Terms were not disclosed. Apex Content will provide a content platform that will fuel Salesforce applications, including AppSpace, Salesforce PRM, and Salesforce Wealth Management Edition. With Apex Content, developers will be able to create new kinds of content applications. The first application to be built on Apex Content will be Salesforce ContentExchange. Salesforce ContentExchange will help companies store, share, find and manage the business information that currently lives in documents, emails and HTML, while keeping all users and content in sync. Salesforce ContentExchange will take community participation, tagging, recommendations, subscriptions, and an AJAX user interface and apply them to enterprise content management. Managing Editor Inc. (MEI) announced a joint development with Clickability to integrate the SoftCare K4 Publishing System with Clickability’s cmPublish, an on-demand Web content-management system. With this integration, MEI and Clickability are offering a multi-channel publishing solution that helps newspapers and magazines streamline their Web and print workflows. Clickability’s cmPublish is a Web publishing platform used by corporate content sites and online newspaper and magazine publishers combining design, publishing, ad server, subscription, newsletter, analytic and administrative capabilities. The integration supports a seamless exchange of content between cmPublish and K4, the database-driven editorial workflow system integrated with Adobe InDesign and Adobe InCopy.
