IBM Introduces Entry-Level Search and Content Integration Software
7/7/2006

IBM introduced two new entry-level versions of its enterprise search and content integration software. The two new offerings are designed for departmental projects and mid-sized businesses, providing a lower cost of entry for organizations to begin taking advantage of IBM enterprise search and content integration capabilities. These quick-start offerings provide fast deployment of secure enterprise search and content integration while providing the flexibility to add advanced search and discovery features as needed. In addition, they provide the ability to connect to information from numerous data sources and applications from other vendors including EMC, FileNet, Hummingbird, Microsoft, Open Text, Oracle, Stellent and CRM applications. IBM WebSphere Information Integrator OmniFind Starter Edition provides easier and more affordable business-focused search. It analyzes and indexes information stored throughout an organization, and allows users to quickly and securely search intranet portals, databases, public Web sites and file systems to obtain highly relevant results. It also includes the ability to plug in advanced information extraction capabilities through the Unstructured Information Management Architecture (UIMA), an open source framework for building advanced search and text analytics applications, enabling users to search for facts and concepts within the underlying content. The new software can be used to enhance use of WebSphere Portal and Lotus Domino applications. A dedicated Lotus Notes/Domino crawler can be configured directly from the OmniFind Web Administration client. This crawler uses native Domino interfaces, understands the structure of Lotus Notes databases and comes with pre-built support for Lotus QuickPlace and Domino.Doc databases. The ability to crawl IBM Workplace Web Content Management is also included. WebSphere Information Integrator Content Starter Edition provides real-time, bi-directional access to numerous content sources and workflow systems. WebSphere Information Integrator Content Starter Edition includes a library of out-of-the-box connectors to provide access to native content and metadata stored in multiple systems. A toolkit is also provided for building custom connectors. IBM WebSphere Information Integrator OmniFind Starter Edition and WebSphere Information Integrator Content Starter Edition are immediately available from IBM and IBM Business Partners. http://ibm.com/software/data/

Microsoft Announces Support for ODF Translation tools
7/6/2006

Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) announced the creation of the Open XML Translator project. The project, developed with partners, will create tools to build a technical bridge between the Microsoft Office Open XML Formats and the OpenDocument Format (ODF). This work is in response to government requests for interoperability with ODF because they work with constituent groups that use that format. In addition to being made available as free, downloadable add-ins for several older versions of the Microsoft Office system, the translation tools will be developed and licensed as open source software. The translation tools will be broadly available to the industry for use with other individual or commercial projects to accelerate document interoperability and expand customer choice between Open XML and other technologies. In addition to the default Open XML file formats, the 2007 Microsoft Office system will include a new menu option that points users to add-ins for PDF and XML-based formats such as the XML Paper Specification (XPS), and now ODF as well. Because these add-ins are available online from a download service, customers will have easy access to the latest industry file format options along with the Open XML formats. Microsoft is developing the translation tools in collaboration with the France-based IT solution provider Clever Age and several independent software vendors, including Aztecsoft in India and Dialogika in Germany. A prototype version of the first translator added to Word 2007 will be posted on the open source software development Web site SourceForge, under the open source Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) license, where anyone can submit bugs and feedback or contribute to the project. The complete version of the Word translation tool is expected to be available free from the download site by the end of 2006, with add-ins for Excel and PowerPoint expected in 2007. Older versions of Office will have access to the translation tool via a free Compatibility Pack, which also provides free updates to enable Open XML format support. http://www.microsoft.com, http://sourceforge.net/projects/odf-converter

I could have sworn they already announced this, but in any case it was inevitable. The whole controversy is now simply not all that interesting. IT organizations need to understand the translation issues, but choosing one format over another is just not that big a deal. Many organizations have more complex issues to deal with, like integrating XML content from custom applications or other enterprise apps that don't map to either ODF or Open XML directly. We have lots of background on this on our blog at http://gilbane.com/blog/archives/open_document_formats/

Canto Releases of Cumulus 7
7/5/2006

Canto announced the release of Cumulus 7. Designed to integrate into creative workflows, Cumulus 7 offers performance gains and enhancements for security, Web-based DAM, automation and usability. The ability to identify and manage the relationships between assets is now available for all Cumulus solutions. This means the images referenced in QuarkXPress or InDesign layouts and PDFs can be virtually "connected" to the assets that reference them. Cumulus 7 Enterprise can even catalog referenced files automatically when the layout files are cataloged. The new interface allows the user to easily find Alternates or Variants, or trace other relationships between assets. With the introduction of Shared Collections, Cumulus 7 reduces search times and eliminates the risk of co-workers and clients using the wrong assets, as they immediately only see the asset records related to their current projects, without any searching. Users can now label and rate asset records with visual tags that make it easy to see which assets have been approved, rejected, put on hold and which are new. Other enhancements include "Actions" to automate workflow steps, new image conversion and processing features, creation of PPT presentations and printing improvements. PDF proof sheets can be created, even if you don't have Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer. Print Templates allow users to define output layouts to re-use and share with others. Web Services integration enables Cumulus 7 to participate in complex, Web-based application infrastructures. Web collaboration has been optimized with the Cumulus 7 Web Clients now working just like Native Client applications. Record and Category View Sets can now be used with the Cumulus 7 Web Clients, and context menu support has been added. Overall performance has been improved and especially the time to connect to catalogs has been reduced. Cumulus 7 offers asset security and control beyond what has ever before been offered by Canto. There have als been some updates with database engine and server enhancements such as the introduction of mirroring and transforming Cumulus 7's database engine into a high-performance "permanent" cache. Cumulus 7 Server and Client software also run "natively" as Universal Binary applications on Intel-based Macintosh computers, so the Client is now "Cocoa-native." http://www.canto.com

Open Text Intends to Acquire Hummingbird
7/5/2006

Open Text Corporation (TSX:OTC)(NASDAQ:OTEX) announced its intention to make an offer through a wholly-owned subsidiary for all of the common shares of Hummingbird Ltd. at a price of U.S.$27.75 per common share in cash, representing a premium of approximately 20.0% over the closing price of the Hummingbird Shares on the Nasdaq on May 25, 2006, the day prior to the announcement by Hummingbird that it had entered into an arrangement agreement with affiliates of the Symphony Technology Group and the offer price is U.S.$1.00 greater than the Symphony Technology Group offer. It is Open Text's intention to commence the offer by no later than July 15, 2006. In connection with its offer, Open Text has entered into lock-up agreements with shareholders of Hummingbird representing 3,179,725 common shares or approximately 18% of the issued and outstanding common shares of Hummingbird (the "Lock-Up Agreements") calculated as of June 19, 2006. Each party entering into a Lock-Up Agreement with Open Text has agreed to deposit, or cause to be deposited, and not withdraw (subject to certain limited rights of withdrawal) their common shares to the Open Text offer. Prior to entering into the Lock-Up Agreements, Open Text, together with its affiliates, owned 764,850 common shares of Hummingbird or approximately 4.3% of the issued and outstanding common shares of Hummingbird as of June 19, 2006. As a result of entering into the Lock-up Agreements, Open Text and its affiliates have acquired beneficial ownership (with the meaning of such term under applicable securities laws) of the common shares of Hummingbird subject to the Lock-Up Agreements, which, together with the common shares of Hummingbird already owned by Open Text and its affiliates, represent in the aggregate approximately 22.3% of the issued and outstanding common shares of Hummingbird as of June 19, 2006. Other shareholders of Hummingbird holding approximately 3.2 million common shares or approximately 18.2% of the issued and outstanding common shares calculated as of June 19, 2006 have also indicated to Open Text their support for a superior offer to the Symphony offer. The offer will be subject to certain customary conditions. Under the terms of the Lock-Up Agreements, the locked-up shareholders have agreed to vote their shares tendered to any Open Text offer against any competing transaction during the term of the lock-up. The lock-up agreement may be terminated by the locked-up shareholders in certain circumstances including, if the Open Text offer is not made prior to July 15, 2006, or if a third party publicly announces a competing offer at a higher price than the price offered by Open Text and Open Text does not amend its offer within a prescribed period to be at least equal to the price of such third party offer. Open Text is also entitled to compensation from the locked-up shareholders in the event of certain third party offers completed at a price greater than U.S.$27.75. The Company intends to finance the offer through cash on hand and committed loan facilities to be provided by a Canadian chartered bank pursuant to a binding commitment letter. The committed loan facilities include a term loan facility and a revolving loan facility. Open Text does not intend to issue equity in connection with the completion of this acquisition. Open Text has retained RBC Capital Markets to act as its financial advisor on this transaction. http://www.opentext.com
