The global economy adds languages as yet another output to the traditional multichannel formula, increasing content volume due to the nuances of dialect and culture. Speakers explain how to build global content value chains that combine core content technologies with heavy doses of authoring assistance, collaboration, automated workflows and project management to documentation and translation processes. Lionbridge Launches CMS Alliance Program with Top Tier Content Management Partners

Translations.com and Adams Globalization Announce Merger

Translations.com, a leading provider of technology-enabled language solutions, announced that it has completed a merger with Adams Globalization, a localization service provider with over 25 years’ experience. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Austin-based Adams Globalization will become a division of Translations.com and will continue to be led by current President Bernd Cafulli, a veteran of the localization industry. Cafulli will join the senior management team of the combined companies and report to Translations.com Vice President, Hans Fenstermacher. Fenstermacher joined Translations.com as the result of a merger in May 2006. Allan Adams, Founder and Chairman of Adams Globalization, will be retiring from the business. Adams’s localization services team will remain in place and continue to serve their clients going forward.

Idiom Names China-based hiSoft an Authorized Solutions Provider and Platinum Tier LSP Partner

MadCap Software and across Systems Integrate Content Creation and Translation

MadCap Software and across Systems announced a strategic partnership to combine technical content creation with advanced translation and localization. Through integrated software from MadCap and across, technical documentation professionals will be able to publish multilingual user manuals, online Help systems, and other corporate content for the international market from a single source. MadCap provides XML software for creating multi-channel publishing, including its product Flare for delivering context-sensitive online Help and print documentation, and Blaze, MadCap’s answer to Adobe’s FrameMaker for publishing large documents, which will be launched later this year. MadCap will also announce MadCap Lingo — an XML based integrated Help authoring tool and translation environment. MadCap Lingo offers complete Unicode support for all left-to-right language. Through their strategic partnership, the two companies will enable integration between Lingo, Flare and Blaze, and the across Language Server, a comprehensive corporate platform for the entire translation process. Providing a centralized translation memory and terminology system, it serves to control the whole translation workflow, and to network all corresponding systems and persons involved. Gilbane Group Launches Globalization Practice & Blog

The Gilbane Group announced today that they have launched a new research and consulting practice covering content globalization technologies and applications. The new practice is led by Lead Analyst Leonor Ciarlone & Senior Analyst Mary Laplante, with contributions from guest blogger Kaija Poysti. The new practice complements existing Gilbane Group consulting services that cover a broad range of content technologies, as well as the Gilbane Group’s Publishing Technology and Strategy consulting practice, and our Enterprise Search practice. The Globalization practice is supported by a new blog devoted to the topic as well as content at our Gilbane conferences in cooperation with the LISA (Language Industry Standards Association) Forum. The Globalization blog goes live on January 10 with an introductory entry by Lead Analyst Leonor Ciarlone.

New blogger

I am starting to blog here on mainly globalization and localization, and the many issues they bring to end users and organizations. To give you an idea about what my views and thoughts are based on, here is a short background:

As a native Finnish speaker I realized early on why languages do matter – very few people outside Finland speak any Finnish, despite its many quaint characteristics, such as 16 cases formed by adding endings to nouns. In addition, I studied operations research and systems analysis at the Helsinki University of Technology, which gave me a tendency to look at everything as processes which can be optimized.

For 14 years, I had a localization service company, Trantex, which translated a lot of software and documentation for major sw providers, such as IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, etc., and also did technical writing and training. In 1997 we sold the company to L&H and I moved to Boston, where I later became a consultant to Finnish high-tech companies entering the US market.

After all the years I spent in the localization world, I have kept following the industry, as I think there are very interesting developments and challenges ahead. In 1985 a translation customer told me that I should start looking for a new job, as all computer users will want to use only English software. Since then, the number of languages into which companies have to translate their materials has at least tripled. With the web and now with wikis and blogs, information can be published instantly 24/7 all over the world, and much of it is or needs to be in languages other than English. After all, only 5% of the world’s population are native English speakers (354 million according to Wikipedia).
