Opening Keynote Panel: The Future of Content Management
We open the conference with an interactive panel of thought leaders from different segments of the content technology spectrum. We'll look at upcoming technologies, market consolidation and the tough issues facing both vendors and users, and make predictions about the next 12-18 months. The panelists all have deep insight and strong opinions on content technologies and market trends – and they seldom completely agree. This panel is designed for anyone with a stake in content management, whether project manager, business manager, IT strategist, consultant, integrator, market or financial analyst, or vendor, and will provide an informed context for developing your strategies, and what you will hear in the rest of the conference and see in the exhibition.
See the specific issues we will be debating,
and contribute a question for the panel on our blog!

Content Technology Works™ Keynote Panel on Best Practices & Implementation Strategies
Speakers in this keynote session complement the opening keynote on technology and trends by sharing their experiences with actually putting content technology to work. This panel features enterprise executives who will describe how their companies leverage the technologies discussed in the first keynote. We'll examine actual business and IT planning scenarios and identify the characteristics associated with successful content technology deployment. If you are not sure what can be done, CTW speakers will show you what has already been done.

Main Conference Sessions
Planning for a Successful Content Management Implementation
A content management system is a critical investment, especially since businesses need to integrate content management with other core business applications. This session will help you get started by providing information on what types of CMSs are available, and guidance on how to determine the scope & purpose of a CMS and how to align your content strategy with your business strategy.
- Erik Hartman, Hartman Communicatie BV, ECM Overview & Introduction to CMSML (Content Management Systems Markup Language)
- Leo Meerman,
Director, CELT Consultancy, Taxonomies as a Success Factor for a CMS Implementation
IT Infrastructure & Portal Integration Issues for CMSs
Once you are confident you have a good grasp of the basic requirements for your content management system, and have started looking at different types of approaches, you need to dig into more detailed requirements of the users of your CMS, give careful consideration to your organization’s IT infrastructure and capabilities, and make sure you understand what you can/should expect from IT and from potential vendors for support. Most companies have some kind of portal technology installed, and there is still some confusion about the relationship between portals and content management. This session will also cover what IT and business need to know to make decisions about the appropriate roles of a CMS and a portal, and how they should be integrated.
Moderator: Johan Klein, Cylogy Nederland B.V.
- Kevin Hamments, Operations Manager, Content Management and Syndication Systems, BBCi, CMS Impacts on Systems, Networks, Security, and IT Support
- Janus Boye, Managing Director, Boye IT, Challenges in Integrating Portals & Content Management Systems
Open Source Content Management Case Studies
Open source technology has established itself as a viable and important component of enterprise applications and IT infrastructures. But there is a lot more to open source than Linux, Apache, JBoss, and MySQL. There are many open source CMS products and tools. In this session we’ll look at some examples of how open source content management technologies are being used today, in order to help you think about the appropriate role of open source in your content management strategies.
Moderator: Erik Hartman, Hartman Communicatie BV
- Sander Vogels, Managing Director Netcreators
- Bård Farstad, Director of Open Source Relations, eZ systems
- Steven Noels, Co-founder, Outerthought
- Bas van der Linden, General Director, Amaze
- Tjeerd Brenninkmeijer, Founder, Hippo Webworks
- Zoran Scepanovic, CEO GemOS
Intranets, Collaboration, Workflow
Collaboration and workflow are sometimes considered independently from content management, but for most business applications the three are intimately connected in practice. This session will look at some examples of how each of these can be dependent on, and enhance, the other. This session explore issues in collaboration, workflow, and content management, including the use of blog and wiki technology for corporate applications.
Moderator: Erik Hartman, Hartman Communicatie BV,
- Martin White, Managing Director, Intranet Focus Ltd, Collaborative Working – Does an Intranet Have a Role?
- Paul Prescod, Group Program Manager, XMetaL, Grassroots Collaborative Knowledge Management with Wikis
- Eric Duchemin, General Director, Hafiba, PFA (Peugeot/Citroën) Case Study
Beyond Basic Content Management
Organizations have many different types of content management needs, ranging from very simple departmental Intranets to enterprise portal, supply chain, e-commerce, and complex product support. This session focuses on content management techniques and approaches for sophisticated requirements, often involving managing very granular reusable content, and on techniques for deigning a CMS driven by feature requirements.
Moderator: Dale Waldt, President aXtive Minds
- Jeroen van Rotterdam, Co-founder & CEO, X-Hive Corporation, Component Content Management & Optimal Reuse
- Martin Bauer, Managing Director, designIT, Agile Content Management
Trends in Enterprise Search
The market for enterprise search tools experienced strong growth last year, largely because enterprises are increasingly desperate to provide access to the continually growing amount of content to their knowledge workers, and are also realizing that tools for Internet search don’t solve the problem, either in terms of features or the capability to search corporate databases and content repositories where information resides in many different formats. This session will help you understand what today’s enterprise search technology can do and where it promises to help with a variety of enterprise applications.

The Role of ECM in Meeting Compliance Regulations
Compliance regulations effect just about all organizations, although differently from country to country and industry to industry, and it seems every technology supplier has realized this and decided they want to help. Clearly ECM vendors have a key role to play, as do any technology suppliers whose products manage even some enterprise information. But compliance is also about implementing and managing processes, and risk, and reporting, and there are specifics of the various regulations that require domain expertise. What role should your existing, or planned content management system play in achieving compliance? This panel will discuss the relative roles of ECM, Databases, Collaboration, and specific compliance management solutions.

- Chuck Myers, Technology Strategist, Intelligent Documents Business Unit, Adobe
- Sebastian Holst, VP Marketing & Product Management, Axentis, Inc.
Solutions for Complex Content Applications
There are a number of dimensions to the complexity of a content application. The content itself can be complex, in the case of technical documentation for a complex product. The timeliness and volume of content can be complex, as in web-based news delivery. The need to comply with multiple international regulatory requirements, as in life sciences, creates complexity, as does the need to publish content simultaneously in multiple languages on localized websites. The Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) standard shows promise as a means of addressing content application complexity. Speakers describe real-world approaches to deploying DITA-based applications for the complex content that drives an organization's business.
Moderator: Mary Laplante, VP Consulting Services, Bluebill Advisors, Sr. Editor, Gilbane Report
- Andrew Thomas, Senior Cross Media Producer, Cross-Media Publishing, Adobe
- Ian Larner, Information Architect and Software Engineer, User Technologies, IBM Hursley Lab
- Eric Silberstein, CTO & Founder, Idiom
There is also a breafast seminar Friday, 27 May on DITA.
Challenges in Multi-lingual Content Management
Many organizations didn’t pay much attention to multi-lingual and other globalization issues when implementing their first or second content management system, but with e-commerce re-emerging in a more rational environment, content and website globalization can no longer be ignored. Even small businesses are becoming more dependent on global sales. In this session speakers will look at specific challenges and solutions for managing multi-lingual content.
- Detlef Obenaus, Senior Content Administrator, Documentation Department,
LHS, Challenges in Multi-lingual CMS - an LHS Case Study
- Paul Trotter, Founder & CEO, AuthorIT. The Role of XML in Translation Workflows
One Minute with a CMS Vendor
In this session a panel of content technology vendors will each be given a few minutes to answer a few questions posed by the moderator. The audience will then get a chance to ask the panel questions. This format can be a very useful way to get a quick view of what makes the vendor approaches different.
