Open Web Docs launches

From the Open Web Docs blog…

High-quality documentation for web platform technologies is a critically important component of our shared, open digital infrastructure. Today, we’re excited to publicly introduce Open Web Docs, a collective project designed to support a community of technical writers around strategic creation and long-term maintenance of web platform technology documentation that is open and inclusive for all.

Open Web Docs was created to ensure the long-term health of web platform documentation on de facto standard resources like MDN Web Docs, independently of any single vendor or organization. Through full-time staff, community management, and our network of partner organizations, we enable these resources to better maintain and sustain documentation of core web platform technologies. Rather than create new documentation sites, Open Web Docs is committed to improving existing platforms through our contributions. Our 2021 priorities include working with Mozilla’s MDN writers and engineers to support the recent infrastructure transition and to prioritize and move forward with key documentation work, developing a community of contributors around core web technology documentation, browser compatibility data, and improving JavaScript documentation. Open Web Docs staff are supported by founding sponsors Coil, Google and Microsoft, with additional financial support from Igalia and generous backers on Open Source Collective. Mozilla, Samsung, and W3C provide additional support and participation.

Cloudflare announces Cloudflare Pages

Cloudflare, Inc. announced the release of Cloudflare Pages, a new website development platform. Cloudflare Pages is JAMstack-compatible and offers security, scalability, pricing, and performance. Cloudflare Pages provides developers a simpler, faster, and more collaborative way to build websites for free. Performance on the web has always been a battle against the speed of light—accessing a site from London that is served from Seattle, WA means every single asset request has to travel over seven thousand miles. Cloudflare Pages helps with the web performance battle, building entire sites directly onto the edge of the Internet, and closer to the end-users. With Cloudflare Pages, developers can focus on building brilliant websites rather than spending time on integrating disparate systems. Pages integrates seamlessly with GitHub to simplify the development process, to collect and integrate feedback from multiple stakeholders, and to deploy those changes quickly to the edge.

Cloudflare releases Data Localization Suite

Cloudflare, Inc. released Data Localization Suite to give businesses across the globe tools to address their data locality, privacy, and compliance needs. With Data Localization Suite, businesses can use Cloudflare’s global cloud network to control where their data goes and who has access to it, no matter what countries they operate in, their industry, or their specific data protection obligations. The suite provides businesses of all sizes:

  • Control over where their data is inspected: Companies can choose the location of the data centers where their traffic is inspected, and can use Cloudflare’s Geo Key Manager to choose where private keys are held, and Edge Log Delivery to send their logs anywhere.
  • A way to build and deploy serverless code with regional control: Cloudflare is expanding Workers, its serverless platform, with Jurisdiction Tags for Durable Objects.
  • Alignment with global and European security certifications: Cloudflare meets standards for security and privacy, including ISO 27001/27002, Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS), and SSAE 18 SOC 2 Type II.
  • Default encryption: Cloudflare’s work developing the Encrypted Client Hello (ECH) protocol standard will help protect the privacy of Internet traffic metadata.

The Internet Society and IETF announce new strategic agreement on Open Standards work

The Internet Society and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) announced a new long term strategic agreement that will ensure the continuity of the IETF’s critical work in creating open standards that make the Internet work better. The IETF has been at the center of technical innovation for the global Internet for nearly 35 years. Open standards allow devices, services, and applications to work together across the tens of thousands interconnected networks that make up the Internet and everything it enables such as the Web and email.

The Internet Society provided the organisational home for the IETF until 2018 when the IETF Administration LLC was formed to support its ongoing operations. Under the new six-year agreement, the Internet Society will provide financial support in two areas: IETF’s work through the LLC, and a new donor match program in support of upcoming fundraising efforts for the IETF Endowment, which is designed to provide long term funding for the IETF’s mission. The new agreement will go into effect on January 1, 2021 and run through December 31, 2026.

Stardog announces cloud-native Enterprise Knowledge Graph Platform

Stardog announced Stardog Cloud, cloud-native Enterprise Knowledge Graph Platform. Stardog Cloud connects data in every cloud as well as on-premise environments. Deployed as a managed service, Stardog Cloud transforms existing enterprise data infrastructure into a comprehensive data fabric and answers complex queries across data silos, unifies data across the enterprise ecosystem based on its meaning, and context to create a connected network of knowledge. Highlights of Stardog include:

  • Data Virtualization: Allows organizations to leave data within existing data sources and silos and query it where it lives – whether on-premise or in the cloud – and perform complex queries across silos.
  • Semantic Models: Rationalizes the meaning between legacy applications on-premise, and new remote, cloud or on-premise applications in a flexible scalable way. Seamlessly supports multiple apps and data models in order to bring context to data and support better decision-making.
  • Inference Engine: Connects data without having to rely only on explicit key matching. Leverages machine learning and inferencing regardless of the data domain or subject area and then uses this rich web of information to discover new relationships.

Inrupt releases enterprise version of Solid Server

Tim Berners-Lee’s (unedited) announcement…

Today marks a huge milestone in Inrupt’s journey to deliver on my vision for a vibrant web of shared benefit and opportunity. I’m thrilled that the first enterprise-ready version of a Solid Server, Inrupt’s ESS, is now available for businesses and organizations. It’s the fruit of two years of work by our outstanding team. These technologies will fundamentally change how organizations connect people with their data and create value together. It’s going to drive groundbreaking new opportunities that not only restore trust in data but also enhance our lives.

We’ve reached this milestone alongside a trusted cohort of early adopters including the BBC, NatWest Bank, the UK’s National Health Service, and the Flanders Government. They’re each proving what’s possible for their users by changing the way they think about, share, and use data. You can read more about these important pilots in this blog post from Inrupt CEO, John Bruce.

The web was always meant to be a platform for creativity, collaboration, and free invention – but that’s not what we are seeing today. Today, business transformation is hampered by different parts of one’s life being managed by different silos, each of which looks after one vertical slice of life, but where the users and teams can’t get the insight from connecting that data. Meanwhile, that data is exploited by the silo in question, leading to increasing, very reasonable, public skepticism about how personal data is being misused. That in turn has led to increasingly complex data regulations.

There had to be a better way. The Solid architecture provides that better way.

I founded Inrupt to trigger an inevitable shift in how the web operates, to mobilize resources and set a long-term direction in motion. Today that shift takes a significant step.

The technologies we’re releasing today are a component of a much-needed course correction for the web. It’s exciting to see organizations using Solid to improve the lives of everyday people – through better healthcare, more efficient government services and much more.

These first major deployments of the technology will kick off the network effect necessary to ensure the benefits of Solid will be appreciated on a massive scale. Once users have a Solid Pod, the data there can be extended, linked, and repurposed in valuable new ways. And Solid’s growing community of developers can be rest assured that their apps will benefit from the widespread adoption of reliable Solid Pods, already populated with valuable data that users are empowered to share.

Ultimately, this new foundation of trust and cooperation will lead to entirely new business models that actually benefit users as well.

Starting today, more organizations worldwide can take the first step towards building a trusted web where innovation flourishes, and everyone – businesses, developers, and web users – share the benefits. We hope you’ll join us on this exciting journey.
