PDFlib GmbH announced the availabilty of the two new versions PLOP 4 and PLOP DS 4. In PLOP DS 4 additional support for cryptographic tokens for digitally signing PDF documents was added. On Windows, Linux, and Solaris PLOP DS can attach cryptographic tokens via the standard PKCS interface. Using this interface digital IDs on smartcards, USB sticks, and other secure devices can be used for generating the signatures. This includes devices with integrated keyboard for secure PIN input. PLOP 4. The new version of PLOP is now able to insert XMP metadata into PDF documents or extract XMP from PDF. Inserted XMP will be validated to make sure that valid output can be created. If the input document conforms to the PDF/A-1 standard, the user-supplied XMP must conform to the XMP rules set forth in PDF/A. These rules (including XMP extension schema validation) will be checked by PLOP to make sure that PDF/A input plus user-supplied XMP will result in standard-conforming PDF/A output. http://www.pdflib.com

Adobe Systems Incorporated today announced the immediate availability of Adobe Acrobat 9 software. Acrobat 9 delivers major innovations that can enable organizations and individuals to communicate in an engaging, professional manner. Now included are native support for Adobe Flash technology, the ability to unify a wide range of content in rich PDF Portfolios, and access to real-time capabilities for co-navigating a PDF document with colleagues. Acrobat 9 provides deep support for Adobe Flash technology, enabling users to include Adobe Flash Player compatible video and application files in PDF documents. The PDF file can be shared for review and comment with others who are using free Adobe Reader 9 software, which is expected to launch up to twice as fast as earlier versions. Acrobat 9 also includes the ability to unify a wide range of content into a single document with the new concept of PDF Portfolios. PDF Portfolios enable users to assemble multiple media types into one, compressed PDF file that can be customized with several professional layouts and specific branding. In addition, Acrobat 9 provides access to capabilities for collaborating live within a PDF document, enabled by working with Acrobat.com, a suite of hosted services available as public beta at www.acrobat.com. This new capability can enable users to drive a group's navigation through a PDF document in real-time, helping ensure everyone is literally, and figuratively, on the same page. The Acrobat 9 family consists of Acrobat 9 Standard, Acrobat 9 Pro, and the new Acrobat 9 Pro Extended software. The most comprehensive member of the family, Acrobat 9 Pro Extended, includes Adobe Presenter software for easily turning Microsoft PowerPoint presentations into multimedia experiences that can be published as PDF files. http://www.adobe.com/acrobat

ESRI announces support for Adobe Acrobat 9 software and new geospatial standards available in PDF with the release of ArcGIS 9.3. ESRI has collaborated with Adobe Systems Incorporated over the past year to ensure a seamless workflow for geographic information system (GIS) professionals using ArcGIS who wish to widely distribute maps in PDF. Recipients of PDF map documents can find and display a location in the file using x,y coordinates as well as measure features directly on the map. This enabling capability enhances both existing customer workflows and creates new ones because recipients without ArcGIS can directly interact in new ways with maps using Acrobat 9.
ArcGIS 9.3 users can author a map document and export it in PDF for wide distribution while passing along the ability for increased end-user interaction with the document beyond simple viewing. http://www.esri.com
