Oracle Contributes XQilla XQuery Engine Under Open Source Apache License

Oracle announced they have contributed the XQilla XQuery engine code, an embeddable XQuery engine for developers building XML-based applications, under the open source Apache 2.0 license. By making XQilla XQuery engine available to developers under the Apache license, Oracle is furthering the adoption of XQuery and XML for application areas including Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Enterprise Content Management. The XQilla XQuery engine, an implementation of the XQuery 1.0 standard published by the W3C, enables developers to query XML data, similar to SQL for relational data. Developers can use the XQilla XQuery engine in commercial and open source applications at no cost, modify and improve it, as well as distribute it in binary and source code form. The XQilla project is hosted on SourceForge, where an active community collaborates to further the technology. For applications requiring XQuery and an XML document repository, Oracle has also integrated XQilla XQuery engine within Oracle Berkeley DB XML, an embeddable, open source XML database. http://www.w3.org/XML/Query/, http://xqilla.sourceforge.net/, http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/berkeley-db/xml/index.html

Colosa, a developer of business process management (BPM) software that enables small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to simplify workflow through the capture and automation of paper-based processes, announced the launch of its open source solution, ProcessMaker OSS version 1.0. ProcessMaker OSS is an AJAX enabled, web-based software tool that allows private and public organizations to automate document intensive, approval-based processes across systems including finance, HR and operations. It allows users across multiple sites to create and share workflows, customize forms, manage processes, and enhance reporting. ProcessMaker OSS v1.0 is published under the GNU Affero GPL v3 open source license, so the source code is accessible to all users and modifications that meet the licensing requirements are acceptable. The software is designed with a full service-orientated architecture (SOA) and Web Services interface allowing the software to directly connect with customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence (BI), content management (CMS), and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. ProcessMaker is an entirely web-based, AJAX-enabled application that is built on the open source LAMP (Apache/MySQL/PHP) stack. Users can design their own forms, documents and business rules in a modular environment within the suite. ISVs can integrate ProcessMaker with existing software to add workflow functionality. To support the new open source version of ProcessMaker, Colosa has modified the software to include features such as an interface design suitable for non-technical business owners that will facilitate communication within the open source community, including forums, wiki documentation, issue tracking, and blogs. Colosa's Enterprise version of ProcessMaker, ProcessMaker Enterprise, differs from the open source version in that it comes with Colosa direct support and some additional higher-end management functionality such as dashboards and reporting. Sun Announces Agreement to Acquire MySQL

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA) announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire MySQL AB, an open source icon and developer of open source databases for approximately $1 billion in total consideration. The acquisition accelerates Sun's position in enterprise IT to now include the $15 billion database market. With millions of global deployments including Facebook, Google, Nokia, Baidu and China Mobile, MySQL will bring synergies to Sun that will help drive new adoption of MySQL's open source database in more traditional applications and enterprises. The integration with Sun will extend the commercial appeal of MySQL's offerings and improve its value proposition with the addition of Sun's global services organization. MySQL will also gain new distribution through Sun's channels including its OEM relationships with Intel, IBM and Dell. MySQL's open source database is the "M" in LAMP - the software platform comprised of Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP/Perl. Sun is committed to enhancing and optimizing the LAMP stack on GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows along with OpenSolaris and MAC OS X. The database from MySQL, OpenSolaris and GlassFish, together with Sun's Java platform and NetBeans communities, will create a Web application platform across a wide range of customers shifting their applications to the Web. Following completion of the proposed transaction, MySQL will be integrated into Sun's Software, Sales and Service organizations and the company's CEO, Marten Mickos, will be joining Sun's senior executive leadership team. In the interim, a joint team with representatives from both companies will develop integration plans that build upon the technical, product and cultural synergies and the best business and product development practices of both companies. MySQL is headquartered in Cupertino, CA and Uppsala, Sweden and has 400 employees in 25 countries. As part of the transaction, Sun will pay approximately $800 million in cash in exchange for all MySQL stock and assume approximately $200 million in options. The transaction is expected to close in late Q3 or early Q4 of Sun's fiscal 2008. Completion of the transaction is subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions. The deal is expected to be accretive to FY10 operating income on a GAAP basis. http://www.mysql.com, http://sun.com
