Digital publishing vendor YUDU Media announced that it has launched a cross-platform self-publishing solution, enabling YUDU Pro customers to create their own digital publications viewable on the web, iPad and iPhone via custom-built branded apps. This is the first stage towards YUDU’s “publish once, view everywhere” goal, which aims to help publishers expand their reach into new content channels. Availability of self-publishing applications for other major eReader and mobile devices will follow in the coming months. A shortcoming of all eReader platforms, including Apple’s iPad, is their inability to process Flash, digital magazines and other interactive media. Because Flash is the basis for the page-turning technology used by most digital publishing solutions, that means that page-turning digital publications such as eMagazines, eCatalogs and many types of eBooks were difficult to port to these devices. Publishers have two choices: format content separately for each individual mobile or eReader platform, or publish one standard mobile version that would simply stretch or contract to fit different screen sizes. YUDU’s cross-platform solution utilizes fixed-page layouts as well as “rich view” capability, which means that content automatically reflows and adapts to fit the size of each device. YUDU Pro customers can purchase branded iPad/iPhone apps built by YUDU. They upload their master .pdf file to YUDU to self-publish the web, iPhone and iPad publications. YUDU also offers a bureau service for those who don’t wish to self-publish. http://www.yudu.com/

The Atex Web CMS shares metadata with AdGear for better yield management and optimization. This is aimed at improving the redistribution of unsold inventory. It also facilitates future Atex and AdGear roadmap initiatives for real-time bidding to sell, acquire and exchange inventory. AdGear supports various ad formats for online, mobile and e-reader channels, including Apple’s new iAds mobile platform. In addition, publishers can reduce their reliance on ads coming from ad networks that typically generate lower CPM rates. http://www.atex.com/ http://www.adgear.com/

BLOX allows editors, web masters or others designated by the newspaper to place programmable and movable blocks of content any place on a web site. ZyLAB, a provider of e-discovery and information management solutions, announced it has integrated text analytics into its eDiscovery & Production System to help make Early Case Assessments (ECA) more efficient. Text analytics enable organizations to identify, classify, and sort enterprise information prior to initiating the formal Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM) Collection process and extract entities, facts, relationships, concepts and subtext that will influence the litigation strategy. Legal counsel gains greater insight into potential liabilities and can make informed decisions much earlier in the process. Traditionally, ECA is executed just before the review stage of e-discovery. In order to do this, all data from appointed custodians has to be collected and processed before analysis and review can start. ZyLAB's eDiscovery & Production System has the capabilities to analyze information without the need to first collect the data and store it on a collection server. Complementing its various search methodologies (Boolean, wildcard, proximity, and fuzzy searching, but also innovative concept searching), the ZyLAB system integrates text analytics to manage huge volumes of dispersed and unfiltered data. Key capabilities of ZyLAB Text Analytics include: Auto-classification and sorting based on the content or file properties; Extraction of more than 200 types of entities and regular expressions like names, job titles, addresses, and social security numbers; Extraction of events and facts Extraction of unknown concepts, trends and patterns; Extraction of document and file properties; Detection and recognition of graphical files; Detection, recognition and translation of foreign language content, as well as automatic translation of 40 languages; Detection of exact and near-duplicate files Data Visualization to identify patterns, relationships, trends, and connections in dynamic diagrams or even Google Maps. The platform is built around an XML data repository and provides authorized reviewers with access via standard Internet browsers. http://www.zylab.com/

XBRL US, a non-profit advancing open standards for XML business reporting in the U.S., announced the launch of XBRL Consistency Suite, a set of online XBRL tools that help public companies identify inconsistencies in XBRL documents related to the use of the XBRL US GAAP Taxonomy. In the over 1,400 XBRL financial statements that have been submitted to date, thousands of errors have been identified, including incorrect use of signs, missing XBRL-tagged elements, and tags that should not have been reported, among others. The XBRL Consistency Suite performs over 6,000 tests against a company's XBRL document and produces a report that shows taxonomy-specific errors that have been made.  Companies, or their service providers, should run the tool on their XBRL-formatted financials before they submit them to regulators and investors as a final step in the XBRL creation process.  It also includes access to a database of XBRL documents submitted to the SEC, updated regularly. Subscribers can perform basic analytics on the database to see what concepts are being used by their peers and what extensions are being created by searching on the full set of filings, or searching by industry or company.  Pre-created extensions reflect new accounting standards and industry changes.  XBRL Consistency Suite was developed by XBRL US Labs, the research and development arm of XBRL US. http://xbrl.us

The Math Working Group has published a W3C Recommendation of  "XML Entity Definitions for Characters." Notation and symbols have proved important for human communication, especially in scientific documents. Mathematics has grown in part because its notation continually changes toward being succinct and suggestive. On the Web, the majority of cases it is preferable to store characters directly as Unicode character data or as XML numeric character references. This document is the result of years of employing entity names on the Web. It presents a completed listing harmonizing the known uses of character entity names throughout the XML world and Unicode. EntropySoft released a new version of its Content Hub. The Content Hub can be connected to over 35 content repository types and offers a centralized access point to all documents, as well as cross-repositories features. For a simplified user-experience content transfers can be managed in a web interface. For interoperability, the content hub is now CMIS-compatible and can work with the latest Web Services standards. For security management, the content hub is fully compatible with Kerberos. A user can do a federated search and specify where the documents have to be transferred. There are no longer complex parameters to set and no more complicated mapping to develop. These requirements are taken into consideration beforehand, when building the content transfer bridges. A major improvement is that the content bridges linking two repositories are dynamic. Therefore, it is now possible to have business units managing on their own the content transfers in the extended enterprise, including transfers to and from the cloud. With the help of content transfer bridges, permissions are replicated, metadata are automatically mapped and there is full-traceability for all transfer of documents. CMIS is planned to receive its final approval in April 2010, but already EntropySoft is complying with the new standard. The 35+ read-write connectors of Content Hub are also CMIS-compatible, normalizing the access to the most popular content-centric applications. http://www.entropysoft.net

The Book Industry Study Group (BISG) in the U.S. and EDItEUR, the international body which maintains ONIX product information standards, worked in collaboration with representatives from the Association of American Publishers (AAP) and the UK Publishers Association (PA), to make rapid provisions in ONIX for Books to allow for a standard means of communicating “agency model” sales terms for e-books. The agency model is a newly defined commercial model for e-book sales which is distinctly different from the more traditional retail model. In the agency model, the publisher sells to the consumer via an “agent” who fulfills the sale on the publisher’s behalf and receives a commission for doing so. Although the traditional model, in which the publisher sells the book to retailers at wholesale, has long been accommodated for in ONIX for Books, appropriate new code values had to be developed to meet requirements of the new agency model. These new code values are now included in the just-published ONIX Code Lists Issue 11. To aid in the implementation of the new codes, BISG and EDItEUR have also co-published a distinctive “how to” guide, showing how to use ONIX to specify different terms of supply in different territories. Entitled “ONIX for Books: How to Specify Different Terms of Supply in Different Territories”, the new guide provides four detailed worked examples, which are fully supported in both ONIX 2.1 and ONIX 3.0. http://www.bisg.org/ http://www.editeur.org/
