The Book Industry Study Group (BISG) and Book Industry Communication (BIC) have co-published for public comment a discussion paper on the International Standard Text Code (ISTC) intended to foster understanding of the book identifier and provide clarification as to its potential benefits. The paper, entitled The International Standard Text Code: A Work in Progress, is the first in a new series of BISG discussion papers that will be published online for real-time reader review and comment.  The ISO standard, published in 2009, identifies an underlying textual “work” independently of a specific manifestation. It provides a mechanism for identifying an original text that may be available in many seemingly different published versions with different ISBNs. By doing so, it has the potential to provide better, more targeted online search and discoverability. However, like ISBN, ISTC’s path to adoption has not been a straight one. The new BISG/BIC discussion paper is designed to look beyond the official documentation of the International ISTC Agency at the opportunities available to publishers, retailers, rights and collection agencies, bibliographic aggregators and systems providers to derive benefit from early implementation of the standard. The International Standard Text Code: A Work in Progress was written by Michael Holdsworth, an industry expert and former Managing Director of Cambridge University Press. http://www.bisg.org http://www.bic.org.uk/

FileTek, Inc., a developer of large-scale data management and information governance solutions, announced Trusted Edge for Intelligent Content Migration, a solution that locates, classifies, and moves documents stored on network file shares into secure locations within enterprise content and records management systems. Trusted Edge uniformly classifies, tags, and moves both new and existing content during the legacy file migration. The solution provides certified adapters for leading repositories, including Microsoft SharePoint, Open Text Livelink, Laserfiche, Symantec Enterprise Vault, IBM Content/Records Manager, FileTek StorHouse, and all repositories that are compliant with the WebDAV interface standard. Traditional file archive applications normally bulk move data "as is" from cluttered file shares to other locations without collecting metadata or applying consistent rules that evaluate individual file content and business value. In contrast to traditional approaches, Trusted Edge for Intelligent Content Migration addresses the shared drive cleanup with automatic content tagging and reorganization in real-time as the migration process occurs. The software "intelligently" classifies, captures, and relocates content based on a set of preconfigured enterprise policies that can be triggered based on file path, file name, file metadata, file type, or even file content. During migration, Trusted Edge tags content with classification metadata for improved indexing and creates a forensic audit trail that details how each item was processed. http://www.filetek.com

Magnolia CMS has released version 4.3 of its Open Source content management system (CMS). This latest release focuses on a new framework to simplify the administration of multi-site, multi-lingual website infrastructures. In addition, Magnolia 4.3 also includes full support for the Groovy scripting language and the launch of Magnolia Store. Magnolia’s latest release has been designed to offer flexibility for users looking to support and administer complex multi-site/multi-domain environments. Within larger enterprise installations, Magnolia 4.3 offers administrators options for producing new sites, from reskinning/rebranding existing sites and content, to creating entirely new websites with the ability to use existing syndicated content. Other WCM features include: creating new websites for mobile devices from existing content; creating new microsites, without the need to shoehorn the site structure into an existing corporate website tree; White-labelling content and/or complete websites for partners and resellers. To ensure continuity across large multilingual sites, administrators are now able to mandate one single site structure across multiple languages. A fallback mechanism allows local administrators to define a default language that will be displayed where translated content is unavailable. The creation of multilingual input masks has also been simplified with support for i18n. Magnolia 4.3 includes an early version of the Magnolia Store. This introduces some basic functions to allow administrators and developers to view installed modules, download their latest versions and browse for new modules from within the administration interface. The future vision for the store is to go beyond managing modules and to make it the main tool for Magnolia users to tap into all the software and services available within the Magnolia ecosystem. In response to popular demand, Magnolia 4.3 now offers full support for Groovy. This is a dynamic language for the Java platform with features similar to those of Python, Ruby, Perl, and Smalltalk. Groovy allows for an agile approach to implementing new functionality for your web site, while retaining the full power, scalability and security of the Java stack. Magnolia 4.3 features a refinement of the tags architecture with a focus on a cleaner and simpler set of components, as well as a separation of the tag library implementation from the UI component rendering. In addition to making tags easier for users, the enhancements should make the transition to Magnolia 5.0 smoother as well. Both the Community Edition and paid-for Enterprise Edition of Magnolia 4.3 are available immediately. The Community Edition is available as a free Open Source download. The Enterprise Edition of Magnolia offers additional functionality and interfaces that simplify implementation in larger organizations. It also incorporates professional service and support from the software’s developers. Prices for the Magnolia CMS Enterprise Edition start at 12,000 USD. http://www.magnolia-cms.com/

With "FirstSpirit Version 4.2 Release 2" (4.2R2), e-Spirit announces a new version of its content management system (CMS). It offers new functions and upgrades for editors, template developers, and administrators working in the previously released 4.2 minor version series. One of the highlights is the support for Internet Explorer in the integrated preview of the FirstSpirit JavaClient. The update from 4.2 to 4.2R2 can be carried out without the need of project migrations. Now Internet Explorer can also be run on Windows systems along with Mozilla Firefox for the preview function in the FirstSpirit JavaClient. Editors can switch between the two browsers to see how a web page is displayed in the two systems. Now the FirstSpirit applications JavaClient, WebClient, server and project configuration, and server monitoring are also available in Dutch (along with German, English, French, Spanish, Italian, and Russian). The language setting for the context menus, labels, and dialog boxes can be selected from the home page. 4.2R2 offers a full-text search feature, which can also be used to search online documentation and the FirstSpirit Access API. Search results can be filtered by target groups (administrators, users, developers) and hits for developers can be filtered by topic. With 4.2R2, e-Spirit implements important features and optimizations for the planned release of the FirstSpirit application on Mac OS X in future versions. The look & feel of the JavaClient and the application for the server and project configuration have been adapted to blend in with the familiar Mac menus. Instead of the previous Windows shortcut keys, now the "Apple" key can be used for customary shortcuts in the Mac OS. In addition, the integrated preview in Mac OS has been updated for 64-bit compatibility. To simplify work for editors who have to manage large quantities of data records, release 2 introduces a limiting and filtering option for displaying results. Another point of note is that as of this release version, e-Spirit is making a few changes to its release management procedure: Rather than the usual "build versions" that were used up to FirstSpirit version 4.1, which included error corrections along with smaller new functions, e-Spirit will now make a clear distinction between two software version types within a minor version series. Bug fix versions will only contain error corrections, while release versions will additionally include various new functionalities. http://www.e-spirit.com/

Interlock Technology, a Cambridge, MA based startup, is offering a new data migration service that allows companies to move archived data off EMC Corp.'s Centera write-once, read many (WORM) arrays on to any other network-attached disk drive. Interlock said the new offering includes both a data assessment service, which determines how much and what type of data is stored on a Centera device, and then a data migration service to move the data. The services use software with a standards-based API, which the company ensures that data integrity complies with regulatory rules. Interlock's service offers users alternatives to Centera technology and to its proprietary application programming interfaces (APIs). The migration service should allow users to take advantage of archiving software and hardware from a variety of vendors, including NetApp's SnapLock application and IBM's cloud storage service. Interlock has partnership agreements with both IBM and NetApp. EMC's Centera is a content addressed storage (CAS) array, or object-based storage, which stores metadata with data so that it can be retrieved based on its content and not its location. Centera also uses a cryptographic hash to ensure that data is immutable, making it compliant with government regulations requiring that sensitive corporate data not be changed after being created. Interlock uses the Extensible Access Method (XAM) to exchange data between it and network attached storage (NAS) systems or storage area networks (SAN). XAM, a set of standards and a programming interface for storing fixed-content,was developed by vendor members of the Storage Networking Industry Association. The XAM standard allows content to be accessed by a variety of applications while also verifying its integrity. Interlock's software runs on standard servers, and uses XAM to message data from Cetera's object-based file system to any other file system. The software also leverages Centera's parallel I/O channels to migrate up to 6TB of data per day. http://www.interlock-tech.com/
