XBRL US reported today to the Domestic Policy Subcommittee hearing of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee. The hearing, on the Treasury Department’s oversight of the use of funds by financial institutions under the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), addressed data collection procedures to monitor the use of funds and the ability of the Treasury to detect and prevent waste and misuse of funds. Prepared remarks given by Mark Bolgiano, President and CEO, XBRL US, described how the use of a free, open-source technology standard can be used to provide citizens, government and investors consistent, comparable reporting on the existing pool of securitized assets, help regulators track the disbursement and use of TARP funds and enable more effective regulation by government. XBRL is a standard agreed upon by industry and government that makes information computer-readable and therefore more easily searched on, extracted and analyzed. XBRL US also developed a dictionary of terms for the risk return summary portion of mutual fund prospectuses and has other projects under way including corporate actions announcements and proxy statement data for executive compensation reporting. Mr. Bolgiano’s testimony detailed an XBRL standard for residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS) used for the full life cycle of securitized assets: valuation on issuance, surveillance and bond remittance. XBRL US worked with multiple industry sources to develop the standard and has demonstrated it to industry and government leaders. XBRL US is the nonprofit consortium for XML data standards and is responsible for bringing together industries to convert US GAAP accounting requirements and common practices into a standard digital dictionary for more transparent reporting by publicly-traded companies. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) mandated the use of XBRL for public company reporting, with compliance starting in June 2009. http://xbrl.us/

Microsoft Corp. and Creative Commons announced the release of the Ontology Add-in for Microsoft Office Word 2007 that will enable authors to easily add scientific hyperlinks as semantic annotations, drawn from ontologies, to their documents and research papers. Ontologies are shared vocabularies created and maintained by different academic domains to model their fields of study. This Add-in will make it easier for scientists to link their documents to the Web in a meaningful way. Deployed on a wide scale, ontology-enabled scientific publishing will provide a Web boost to scientific discovery. Science Commons, a division of Creative Commons, is incubating the adoption of semantic scientific publishing through creation of a database of ontologies (http://neurocommons.org/) and development of supporting technical standards and code. Microsoft Research has built a technology bridge to enable the link between Microsoft Office Word 2007 and these ontologies. Microsoft is making the source code for both the Ontology Add-in for Office Word 2007 and the Creative Commons Add-in for Office Word 2007 tool available under the Open Source Initiative (OSI)-approved Microsoft Public License (Ms-PL) on CodePlex, Microsoft's Web site for hosting open source projects, at http://ucsdbiolit.codeplex.com/ and http://ccaddin2007.codeplex.com/ respectively. The Ontology Add-in for Word 2007 is enabled by Microsoft Office Word's Open XML Formats underpinnings and its extensibility in the form of smart tags. http://creativecommons.org/, http://www.microsoft.com/

Systems Alliance Inc. announced the release of Enhancement Pack 5 (EP 5), a software update for the company’s SiteExecutive Web content management application. In addition to client-requested improvements and support for IE 8, EP 5 simplifies the creation, management and delivery of mobile-friendly Web content. To deliver mobile content, earlier versions of SiteExecutive gave clients the option of adding media-dependent style sheets based on the W3C CSS 2 standard for handheld devices. Lack of support for this standard among popular mobile browsers led to a new approach introduced in EP 5, which combines automatic detection of mobile browsers and template swapping. When SiteExecutive EP 5 detects a site visitor has arrived from a mobile device (iPhone, Blackberry, etc.), it automatically swaps the desktop Web page for a new page created with a “Sibling” template configured specifically for mobile devices. Based on the best practices for developing mobile content, Sibling template creation requires very little effort when compared with creating media-specific CSS. http://www.systemsalliance.com

Now visited by over two-thirds (67 percent) of the global online population, "Member Communities," which includes both social networks and blogs, has become the fourth most popular online category - ahead of personal email. It is growing twice as fast as any of the other four largest sectors (search, portals, PC software and email), according to The Nielsen Company's "Global Faces and Networked Places," a comprehensive report published today revealing the new global footprint of social networking. According to the Nielsen report, Facebook - the world's most popular social network - is visited monthly by three in every 10 people online across the nine markets in which Nielsen tracks social networking use. Orkut in Brazil has the largest domestic online reach (70 percent) of any social network in these markets. The report, available today, provides insights into the changing size and audience composition of the global social networking audience and the increasing share of Internet time for which it accounts. The report also analyzes how the major players are faring and what advertisers and publishers can do to take advantage of the social network phenomenon. Other findings include: One in every 11 minutes online globally is accounted for by social network and blogging sites; The social network and blogging audience is becoming more diverse in terms of age: the biggest increase in visitors during 2008 to "Member Community" Web sites globally came from the 35-49 year old age group (+11.3 million); Mobile is playing an increasingly important role in social networking; Nielsen found UK mobile Web users have the greatest propensity to visit a social network through their handset, with 23 percent (2 million people) doing so, compared to 19 percent in the US (10.6 million people). These numbers are a big increase over last year - up 249 percent in the UK and 156 percent in the US. Omniture, Inc. (NASDAQ: OMTR) announced a new feature for Omniture SiteCatalyst customers that allows online marketers to measure brand activity on Twitter. Omniture customers can import Twitter data into SiteCatalyst, allowing them to answer questions about their business, such as "who is talking about my brand and whom are we reaching?" Online marketers will be able to better identify brand advocates and brand detractors. Product managers can also better identify important feature requests and recommendations from their most loyal users as they plan their product roadmaps. The SiteCatalyst integration with Twitter data also enables marketers to take advantage of the SiteCatalyst real-time alert feature, which can be used to send e-mails and SMS messages to mobile devices based on pre-determined criteria, such as a spike in mentions of brand-related terms. The integration can also be used to classify Twitter users into marketing segments such as customers, vendors and employees. In addition to general brand-related alerts, this solution allows marketers to create an unlimited number of "keyword" reports that will scan full "tweet" text and route relevant "tweets" to corporate employees based upon specific keywords of interest to them. For example, product managers can specify the specific terms they are interested in and receive reports containing all "tweets" mentioning their brand and those keywords without having to manually monitor the Twitter service. http://www.omniture.com

WoodWing Software released Smart Styles for Adobe Creative Suite 4. Smart Styles is an automated formatting tool that simplifies repetitive formatting of text, frames, and other objects in InDesign and InCopy. Besides support for CS4, the new Smart Styles release also incorporates Nested Styles enhancements (including GREP) and enhancements for text with a stroke. Users of Smart Styles drag a styled object into a Smart Styles library, after which Smart Styles analyzes its formatting. Page designers can then drag this Smart Style object out of the library and onto another page element to apply the same formatting. Smart Styles can also deal with variations, when the target object is different from the original. This removes the need for designers to manually apply repetitive styling, allowing them to spend more time on the creative side of their work. Since Smart Styles libraries can be opened and shared by multiple users, the designer does not have to spend time importing styles from older documents or worry about synchronizing styles among multiple InDesign templates. Smart Styles also adds basic spreadsheet functionality to InDesign and InCopy by allowing users to insert formulas into tables and sort columns by multiple attributes such as alphabetical or numeric values with ascending or descending options. A free 30-day trial version of Smart Styles CS4 can be downloaded. http://www.woodwing.com/

Zoho announced Zoho Writer 2.0, the next generation of the company’s online word processor. Featuring MenuTabs, a new interface philosophy that uses tabbed menus to streamline the user experience, Zoho Writer 2.0's new user interface will soon be adopted by other Zoho productivity and collaboration applications. Previously, Zoho Writer displayed all commands at once via a three-row toolbar. However, as functionality was quickly added, the UI became crowded. The crown jewel of Zoho Writer 2.0 is the MenuTab design, which streamlines the toolbar with tabbed menus that not only organize commands in context-based groups, but also provide quick access to commands in other tabs. Users now get the best of both worlds - menus and tabs. The Zoho Writer 2.0 toolbar includes Format, Insert, Review, Share, Views, and Page Setup tabs. Users click on a tab to view all related commands, which are displayed in a single row below the tab. Users can also click on a tab’s down arrow to display the commands in a drop-down menu. The latter option lets users work in one tab yet access commands found in other tabs. Other enhancements to the Zoho Writer 2.0 interface include an enhanced sidebar, improved header/footer with auto-fill, and document info and live word count displayed in the status bar. http://www.zoho.com/
