The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) XML Security Working Group has published a set of eight Working Drafts. The "XML Signature 1.1" and "XML Encryption 1.1" First Public Working Drafts make changes to the default sets of cryptographic algorithms in both specifications. "XML Security Use Cases and Requirements" and "XML Signature Transform Simplification: Requirements and Design" are documents that we expect to help guide the group's work on a future version of the XML Security specifications that might make more radical changes than the 1.1 series of these specifications. The Working Group would like to receive early feedback on these four drafts. Additionally, the "XML Security Derived Keys" specification introduces mark-up for key derivation, for use with both XML Signature and XML Encryption. "XML Signature Properties" defines commonly used signature properties. "XML Security Algorithms" is a cross-reference for the algorithms and their identifiers used with the XML security specifications, bringing in one place information located in a number of documents. "XML Signature Best Practices" is a revised Working Draft for Best Practices in using the XML Signature specification. http://www.w3.org/2008/xmlsec

MadCap Software announced that MadCap Mimic 3.0 and Capture 4.0 are now available. Mimic is MadCap's native XML software simulation application. Capture is MadCap's native XML screen capture and graphics editing software, which is designed specifically for documentation professionals. The newest product versions introduce MovieSync for transferring movie properties between different Mimic movie versions, as well as expanded single-sourcing via conditions, targets, and reusable movie frames and images. MadCap MovieSync, new to Mimic 3.0, is a function that allows users to take two different Mimic simulation movie versions, align the frames that are the same in each movie, and then automatically transfer the properties from the old version to the new one. These properties include objects (e.g., shapes, cursors, typing boxes), timing, sizes, and more. Because many simulation movie versions have a high number of identical frames, MovieSync removes much of the manual labor required to add objects, such as cursors and animated typing boxes, and ensures that their timing is correct. Condition tags in Mimic 3.0 let users tag movies, movie frames, or objects within movie frames for use, depending on the conditions. For example, condition tags can allow variations based on required usage and/or audiences. As in Mimic 3.0, condition tags in Capture 4.0 indicate the circumstances under which certain image content will be included or excluded. For instance, an image might have one callout object for advanced users and another for beginning users. Condition tags for "advanced" and "beginner" can ensure that the right callout appears with the image. The use of condition tags for images and movies will be enhanced further with the next releases of two products that are already tightly integrated with Mimic and Capture: MadCap Flare for multi-channel content authoring and MadCap Blaze for authoring long print documents. Mimic and Capture will be able to automatically access any condition tags created in these next versions of Flare and Blaze. MadCap Mimic 3.0 and MadCap Capture are available today, both separately and as part of the MadCap MadPak. A standalone Mimic package is priced at $299 per single-user license. Capture is priced at $89 per single-user license. The MadPak, which also includes MadCap Flare, Capture, Echo and Analyzer, is available for $1,299 per license. Support fees are $199 per year for the Bronze Level, $299 for the Gold Level, and $499 for the Platinum Level. Discounts for multiyear support contracts are also available. http://www.madcapsoftware.com/

One of the most closely watched technology trends for 2009 is the need for enterprises to leverage new web platforms while holding down the costs of managing their ever-proliferating content. Even in the midst of the current economic downturn, critical areas related to global business content will see double-digit growth over the next 12 months - including spending on search technologies which is projected to represent almost half of all digital spending by businesses in 2009, along with rising corporate investment in social media tools (Source: Winterberry Group). Reflecting these fundamental shifts in the way enterprises engage with customers and disseminate information, the sixth annual Gilbane San Francisco (http://gilbanesf.com) June 2-4, 2009 at the Westin Hotel in San Francisco – will focus on the timely theme “Where Content Management Meets Social Media.” Produced by The Gilbane Group and Lighthouse Seminars, the 2009 Gilbane San Francisco conference will offer enhanced programs tied to the business issues surrounding a company’s marketing, technical and enterprise content. The conference tracks have been organized around the four major areas of how enterprises use Web and content technologies and where they are most likely to invest, including: Web Business & Engagement; Managing Collaboration & Social Media; Enterprise Content: Searching, Integrating & Publishing; and Content Infrastructure. Gilbane San Francisco brings together industry experts from leading technology, enterprise IT, analyst, and consulting firms who provide attendees with the latest successful content management and new media strategies, technologies and techniques. In addition to the latest best practices, technology coverage within these four tracks will include enterprise and site search; content globalization; semantic technologies; publishing; XML; and social media tools and platforms from Twitter to business blogs, project wikis and microformats. The just-published schedule of conference sessions can be viewed at http://gilbanesf.com/conference-schedule.html. Pre-conference workshops will feature industry thought leaders covering core topics in web content, new media, Sharepoint and more -- the full schedule of workshops can be found at http://gilbanesf.com/workshops.html. IT and business professionals involved in content creation, management, delivery or analytics wishing to attend the conference may register at: http://gilbanesf.com/registration_information.html. Top U.S. and international magazines and newspapers plus more than 1,200 different blogs are also available. Kindle 2's 6-inch, 600 x 800 electronic paper display provides 16 shades of gray versus 4 shades available in the original Kindle, resulting in crisp text, and sharper images and photos.  Kindle reads like printed words on paper because the screen works using real ink and doesn't use a backlight, eliminating the eyestrain and glare associated with other electronic displays. Kindle 2 offers the experimental read-to-me feature "Text-to-Speech" that converts words on a page to spoken word so customers have the option to read or listen. Customers can switch back and forth between reading and listening, and their spot is automatically saved. Amazon's new "Whispersync" technology automatically syncs Kindle 2 and the original Kindle, which makes transitioning to the new Kindle 2 or using both devices easy for customers. Kindle 2 will also sync with a range of mobile devices in the future. Kindle 2 is available for pre-order starting today for $359 and will ship February 24. http://amazon.com/kindle2

WoodWing Software has released Enterprise 6, the latest version of the company's content publishing platform. Equipped with a new editing application called "Content Station", Enterprise 6 offers article planning tools, direct access to any type of content repository, and integrated Web delivery functionality. Content Station allows users to create articles for delivery to the Web, print, and mobile devices, and offers out-of-the-box integration with the open-source Web content management system Drupal. Content Station works with Enterprise's new server plug-ins to allow users to search, select, and retrieve content stored in other third-party repositories such as digital asset management systems, archives, and wire systems. Video, audio, and text files can then be collected into "dossiers", edited, and set for delivery to a variety of outputs, all from a single user-interface. A built-in XML editor lets authors create documents intended solely for digital output. The content planning application lets managers assign content to users both inside and outside of the office. Enterprise's Web publishing capabilities feature a direct integration with Drupal. Content authors click on a single button to preview or deliver content directly to Drupal and get information such as page views, ratings, and comments back from the Web CMS. And if something needs to be pulled from the site, editors can simply click "Unpublish". They don't have to contact a separate Web editor or navigate through another system's interface. The server plug-in architecture also allows for any other Web content management system to be connected. http://www.woodwing.com/
