MadCap Software announced its roadmap for supporting the Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) standard. With MadCap, authors will have a complete authoring and publishing suite of tools for creating, managing, translating and publishing DITA content. The products will use MadCap's XML editor, which provides an graphical user interface for creating featured documentation that hides the XML being generated below. In the first phase of its DITA initiative, MadCap Software will add DITA support to four products: MadCap Flare, MadCap Blaze, MadCap Analyzer for reporting, MadCap Lingo. With MadCap Flare and Blaze, authors will be able to import DITA projects and topics as raw XML content, and using the XML editor, change the style sheets to get the desired look and structure. Authors will then have the option to publish the output as DITA content; print formats, such as Microsoft Word, DOCX and XPS or Adobe FrameMaker, PDF and AIR; and a range of HTML and XHTML online formats MadCap Analyzer will work directly with DITA topics and projects to allow authors to analyze and report on the content. Similarly, MadCap Lingo will import data directly from DITA topics and projects, so that it can be translated. The translated material can be published as DITA content or exported to a Flare or Blaze project. In the second phase, MadCap will enable authors to natively create and edit DITA topics in Flare and Blaze, as well as MadCap X-Edit, MadCap's software family for creating short documents, contributing content to other documents, and reviewing content. Like Flare and Blaze, X-Edit will also support the ability to import and publish DITA information. In the third phase, MadCap will add DITA support to its forthcoming MadCap Team Server. This will make it possible to manage and share DITA content across teams and projects, as well as schedule DITA publishing. http://www.madcapsoftware.com

Sitemasher says their new online website platform puts the focus on the website and not the programming and IT development needed to create it. Sitemasher launched a partner program aimed at firms focusing on website design, development, and brand marketing and consulting. Traditionally a site requires several people, including a designer, developer, back-end IT administrator and a project owner, to implement a full project. But the Sitemasher website platform helps designers to create full-featured custom sites that can be implemented "without programming and IT integration". Sitemasher's partnership program has three tiers depending on the number of websites published by the website design firm. Benefits of the program vary by tier and include listing as a partner on the Sitemasher partnership page, customer leads, a free subscription for the design firm's website, varying levels of support, and volume discounts or commissions. http://www.sitemasher.com

An appliance built to eliminate five common knowledge-sharing obstacles was announced this week by Yakabod, Inc. Version 3.0 of the Yakabox Knowledge Network, a workgroup collaboration system, has an interface so "intuitive that users are productive the first time they log on". The Yakabox Knowledge Network meets National Security Agency Protection Level (PL) 3 security requirements. The Yakabox3.0 interface makes navigation straightforward. The system "learns" which topics, events and categories each team member deems relevant, then delivers that information directly to the desktop Activity Viewer. Unlike data-centric architectures, the Yakabox captures "soft" knowledge: the invaluable experiences and insights teams generate every day, then lose in shared drives and in-boxes. http://www.yakabod.com

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) updated its XHTML Modularization standard with support for designing modular languages using "XML Schema." The addition of schemas to "XHTML Modularization 1.1" is an important step towards the XHTML2 Working Group's goal that XHTML support rich Web content and be extensible, while remaining interoperable. A modularization standard allows language designers to reuse elements defined by multiple parties (including other W3C standards such as SVG and MathML) and combine them into new formats to meet specific application needs. The standard allows people to use schema-enabled, off-the-shelf tools to immediately begin authoring and validating documents written in those new languages. The XHTML2 Working Group, which gained experience using Modularization 1.1 to build some modules and languages, now plans to add schema support to other XHTML standards. http://www.w3.org/TR/2008/REC-xhtml-modularization-20081008/

Open Text Corporation announced Open Text Storage Services for SharePoint, the latest addition to the company's Open Text Content Services product offerings. This new service lets customers store Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 content in external storage devices, while at the same time reducing wasted space by automatically detecting multiple instances of the same content. The solution helps customers increase the scalability of their SharePoint solutions and reduce storage costs. In SharePoint servers, document content is stored inside dedicated SharePoint SQL databases, including what is known as binary large objects or BLOB content that is not necessary for queries to the database. BLOB content can be stored outside of the SharePoint SQL database to save space. Open Text Storage Services for SharePoint, which uses the Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 External BLOB Storage API, provides the capability to store identical copies of documents in SharePoint only once. It accomplishes this single-instance archiving feat by keeping track of whether a document has already been stored. Open Text Storage Services for SharePoint not only lowers overall storage costs and improves performance; it can also help enterprises meet regulatory and business requirements for information retention. http://www.opentext.com
