EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC), IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) announced a jointly developed specification which uses Web Services and Web 2.0 interfaces to enable applications to interoperate with multiple Enterprise Content Management (ECM) repositories by different vendors. The companies intend to submit the CMIS specification to OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) for advancement through its standards development process. The ultimate goal of CMIS is to dramatically reduce the IT burden around multi-vendor, multi-repository content management environments. Currently, customers must spend time and money to create and maintain custom integration code and one-off integrations to get different ECM systems within their organizations to "talk" to one another. The specification will also benefit independent software vendors (ISVs) by enabling them to create specialized applications that are capable of running over a variety of content management systems. Working together since late 2006, the three companies were joined in the creation of the CMIS draft specification by Alfresco Software, Open Text, Oracle and SAP. A final gathering of all seven companies was recently held to validate interoperability of the specification before submission to OASIS. EMC, IBM and Microsoft worked together to define an interface that: Is designed to work over existing repositories enabling customers to build and leverage applications against multiple repositories-unlocking content they already have; De-couples web services and content from the content management repository, enabling customers to manage content independently; Provides common web services and Web 2.0 interfaces to dramatically simplify application development; Is development platform and language agnostic; Supports composite application development and mash-ups by the business or IT analyst, and: Grows the ISV and developer community. http://community.emc.com/community/labs/cmis

Radiant Logic, Inc. announced the "Context Server". The RadiantOne Virtual Context Server (VCS) expands upon Radiant Logic's identity virtualization platform. By extracting contextual information buried in application silos, RadiantOne VCS enables integration of business processes. RadiantOne VCS publishes information out of application silos by generating English sentences out of application metadata. Those sentences are organized into meaningful views acting as contextual links across business processes. This enables information to be searched, retrieved across application silos and updated in the right context. This information, often in the form of transactional data in the enterprise, is fragmented across business functions and buried into forms and application logic. Integrating this information without a common semantic layer has been a constant challenge of data integration. RadiantOne VCS bridges the void between understanding transactions within and across silos by translating low level data transactions into English sentences. RadiantOne VCS builds upon Radiant Logic's identity virtualization platform, which includes the company's product RadiantOne Virtual Directory Server (VDS). http://www.radiantlogic.com/

Yammer launched a micro-blogging tool for enterprises. On Yammer, co-workers exchange short frequent answers to one simple question: "What are you working on?" As employees answer this question, a company feed is created in one central location, enabling co-workers to discuss ideas, post news, ask questions, and share links and other information. The company feed can be accessed in real-time via the web, IM, SMS text messaging, an iPhone application, a Blackberry application, a desktop application, or email. Yammer also serves as a company directory in which every employee has a profile and as a knowledge-base where past conversations are archived and easily searched. Unlike traditional enterprise tools which must be installed by the company's IT department, anyone in a company can start their Yammer network and begin inviting colleagues. This means that Yammer can spread virally through a company like a consumer social network. At the same time, Yammer ensures the privacy of each network by limiting access to those with a valid company email address. The model is similar to Facebook's beginnings as a college social network, when students had to validate a college email to join their college network. The basic Yammer service is free, but companies can pay to claim and administer their networks. The cost is $1 per employee per month, after a free three-month trial period. Companies who claim their network can configure their own security requirements by setting stricter password policies or restricting use to their office or VPN. These settings are also used on sites like Salesforce.com. Yammer was originally developed at internet company Geni.com as an internal productivity tool. Over time, the product evolved into a full-fledged company intranet / social network, adding features not available on consumer micro-blogging sites. Geni's 30 employees used the product internally for six months, creating over 15,000 messages. Eventually Geni decided to spin out the product into a new entity so other companies could use it too. http://www.yammer.com
