The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) announced new standards that will make it easier for people to browse the Web on mobile devices. Mobile Web Best Practices 1.0, published as a W3C Recommendation, condenses the experience of many mobile Web stakeholders into practical advice on creating mobile-friendly content. People who want to use the Web while "on the go" face several challenges, including hardware and software diversity, device constraints, and bandwidth limitations. Mobile Web Best Practices 1.0 helps content authors face those challenges and develop content that works on a wide array of mobile devices. Authors and other content producers will find practical advice for managing user experience challenges such as data input and page scrolling. Content developers have faced an additional challenge: a variety of mobile markup languages to choose from. With the publication of the XHTML Basic 1.1 Recommendation today, the preferred format specification of the Best Practices, there is now a full convergence in mobile markup languages, including those developed by the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA). The W3C mobileOK checker (beta), when used with the familiar W3C validator, helps developers test mobile-friendly Web content. W3C is also developing resources to help authors understand how to create content that is both mobile-friendly and accessible to people with disabilities. http://www.w3.org

Google announced that Knol is now open to everyone. They announced Knol back in December. Knols are authoritative articles about specific topics, written by people who know about those subjects. From their blog post: "The key principle behind Knol is authorship. Every knol will have an author (or group of authors) who put their name behind their content. It's their knol, their voice, their opinion. We expect that there will be multiple knols on the same subject, and we think that is good. With Knol, we are introducing a new method for authors to work together that we call "moderated collaboration." With this feature, any reader can make suggested edits to a knol which the author may then choose to accept, reject, or modify before these contributions become visible to the public. This allows authors to accept suggestions from everyone in the world while remaining in control of their content. After all, their name is associated with it! Knols include strong community tools which allow for many modes of interaction between readers and authors. People can submit comments, rate, or write a review of a knol. At the discretion of the author, a knol may include ads from our AdSense program. If an author chooses to include ads, Google will provide the author with a revenue share from the proceeds of those ad placements. We are happy to announce an agreement with the New Yorker magazine which allows any author to add one cartoon per knol from the New Yorker's extensive cartoon repository. Cartoons are an effective (and fun) way to make your point, even on the most serious topics." http://knol.google.com

Krugle, Inc. announced the immediate availability of the newest version of its search appliance for enterprise software teams. Krugle Enterprise 2.3 targets costly code maintenance issues by optimizing defect management across released projects and effectively coordinating organization-wide component development. The Krugle Enterprise code search platform enables software development organizations to uncover and profit from the insight and intellectual property contained in source code and related information. Krugle Enterprise 2.3 represents the first in a series of updates to the search appliance that will directly target deployment solutions and expand the utility of code search in software development. The applications of Krugle Enterprise address a broad range of development issues, but for many organizations the most compelling are a set of search-driven solutions that purport to increase the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of code maintenance, including bug tracking and upkeep across disparate versions of the same original source code. New features in Krugle Enterprise 2.3 help developers efficiently identify and track similar code across projects and versions. Changes in this update include: Search for multiple lines of code. This "snippet" search results in ranked lists of exact and approximate matches, permitting detection of similar code across multiple branches or releases, and "cut and paste" duplication even when the source snippet has been altered; Associate custom data fields with each code file indexed by Krugle. This allows users to extend code file search queries with custom qualifiers, like file identifiers and links to other resources; and Support high capacity 4 drive configurations. This version of Krugle Enterprise appliance is capable of handling over 10 billion lines of source code per appliance, with new caching and processing methods for duplicate code modules. http://www.krugle.com/
