Index Data Internationalizes Zebra
Index Data has released a major upgrade to its open source Zebra indexing engine that makes it UNICODE compliant. With this upgrade, Zebra is now able to support indexing and searching in any UNICODE compliant script. The new version of Zebra can interact with the ICU libraries. ICU stands for "International Components for Unicode" and is a development project sponsored, supported, and used by IBM, and that consists of a set of open source program libraries that help applications process Unicode data in any script. The following organizations participated in this effort: Library of Congress, the libraries of OPALS-NA (OPen-source Library Automation System-North America), the South Asia Union Catalogue based at the University of Chicago, and the University of Crete (Greece). Zebra is an XML-based indexing engine and database server that can index, retrieve, and serve up text in any format, and natively understands MARC and Z39.50/SRU. Zebra is distributed under the GNU General Public License: documentation and software downloading are freely available at http://indexdata.com/zebra
