Teragram announced the launch of Semantic Term Manager v. 2.0 (STM v. 2.0), software that enables management of content and maintenance of ontologies in enterprise content repositories and databases. STM v. 2.0 helps corporate librarians to maintain ontologies and integrate this information directly with Teragram’s TK240 taxonomy management tool. The combination of these two programs allows knowledge workers to maintain metadata across repositories and databases and to automatically tag documents according to the defined taxonomies. One example use for STM v. 2.0 would be to maintain information in different authority lists in the enterprise and build relationships between them. For instance, a corporate librarian could easily manage relationships between terms in the sales lead database (i.e. primary contacts, companies and locations) and cross-reference this with a list of internal salespeople and their territories. Additionally, STM v. 2.0 creates a uniform approach to tagging content across different divisions in a large company. For example, if a pharmaceutical development lab maintains a database of drugs, diseases and side effects, several research scientists can log in to make changes to the database. An administrator approves or rejects these changes, allowing the information to be updated as it is generated by the people working in the field. STM v. 2.0 works in tandem with Teragram’s TK240 taxonomy management program. Information stored in the STM v. 2.0 database can be exported to Teragram’s database management tool, TK240, to build complex taxonomies which can be used to automatically categorize documents and to extract entities and events from documents. For example, if a publishing company wishes to create dynamic topic pages on a website, STM v. 2.0 could be used to maintain a database of terms that relate to general information about a company (e. g. ticker symbol, location, CEO). TK240 could actively add hyperlinks to company names mentioned in documents as they pass through the content management system. Working in concert, these two programs maintain both the static and dynamic content of the page. http://www.teragram.com/

Researchers from Xerox Corporation (NYSE:XRX) have demonstrated a software technology that can link text and general images together to improve fundamental document management tasks like retrieving information from a database or automatically routing documents. For example, if a brochure from an isolated hotel in the French Alps describes the hotel's features and includes maps and pictures of mountainous surroundings, the categorizer will automatically discover the content and link the text and the images together. Then someone searching for an isolated mountain lodge within a certain price range would retrieve the brochure even if "isolated lodge in the mountains" were never mentioned in the actual text. A second application, according to Xerox, could be at Xerox's imaging centers, where the company scans and digitizes documents to create secure, accessible and searchable online information archives for its customers. Currently the process of scanning, labeling and indexing documents is partially supervised by operators. Hybrid categorization can streamline document management in this application, improving accuracy and reducing manual operations. Enabling Xerox's hybrid categorizer are recent advances in machine learning and pattern recognition, advances in computer vision and the large body of hybrid content now available. XRCE has extensive experience with text categorization and, in 2005, demonstrated a generic image categorizer. The new categorizer combines earlier text and image categorizers to handle hybrid content, with powerful results. The software remains under development. Xerox has filed a number of patents on the technology. The Xerox Innovation Group conducts work in color science, computing, digital imaging, electromechanical systems, novel materials, linguistics, work practice analysis and nanotechnology connected to Xerox's expertise in printing and document management. http://www.xerox.com/innovation

Vivisimo debuted social search for the enterprise with the introduction of the Vivisimo Velocity 6.0 enterprise search platform. Velocity is designed to enable enterprises to increase collaboration among workers, accelerate innovation, and gain insight into the collective intelligence of their organizations. Velocity 6.0 harnesses the human knowledge about content resident in an organization with social tagging by giving end-users the ability to vote on or rate search results using a numerical scale. This combined insight into the usefulness of information can be used to adjust relevancy of results in real-time, or can be used to convey feedback to others. Also, Velocity 6.0 empowers users to tag search results with keywords, providing a more efficient and faster search experience. Enabling users to vote on, rate, tag, save and share content within the search interface is just the first step in creating a collaborative information-enriching environment. Velocity 6.0 allows users to add their own knowledge about information found via search directly into the search result itself in the form of free-text annotation. Rather than sending an email with a file attachment to colleagues with commentary about a document, users can have a dialogue about content right within the search interface. And social bookmarking within Velocity 6.0 allows users to save search results into virtual folders for future reference and use or to share with others, such as a project team. Velocity 6.0 supports social networking with search for experts within an organization. Profiles of colleagues are developed based on data from different repositories and are displayed as a mash-up application of pictures, contact information, biographical data and recent tagging activity in a single view. Velocity 6.0 also provides a visual map or executive dashboard of hot topics within groups, departments or across the entire enterprise, based upon information that has been tagged, saved or shared, providing a window into the collective intelligence of the organization. Velocity 6.0 will be available within 45 days. http://vivisimo.com
