Author-it Software Corporation announced the introduction of Author-it 5.0, a content management system to include interactive authoring memory. This memory product feature will be known as Author-it Xtend. Author-it Xtend provides a method for the reuse and sharing of content and knowledge within an organization. Using intelligent "fuzzy logic" matching, this new feature makes all of the approved knowledge/content contained in a company’s database available to content creators. Once a user begins typing, matching or similar content is located and returned even if the user is unaware that the content exists. Suggestions can be revealed in as few as three words and in a fraction of a second. Users can choose to instantly insert any of the suggestions, see what documents those suggestions currently appear in, or continue typing to refine the suggestions. Options controlling the behavior of the suggestions make it as unobtrusive, or as conspicuous, as the user chooses. Content can be restricted based on the company's security restrictions. Author-it 5.0 has the look and feel of "Office 12" - the 2007 version of Microsoft Office. New publishing profiles and templates improve the ability to customize and publish print, online help, and Web-based outputs. Author-it 5.0 will run on Windows Servers and Windows-based PC's. Current Author-it users who have maintenance agreements will get an automatic upgrade to Author-it 5.0. Author-it 5.0 is available direct through the Author-it Web site. http://www.authorit.com

The World Wide Web Consortium is connecting the Semantic Web and microformats communities. With "Gleaning Resource Descriptions from Dialects of Languages", or GRDDL (pronounced "griddle"), software can automatically extract information from structured Web pages to make it part of the Semantic Web. Those accustomed to expressing structured data with microformats in XHTML can thus port their existing data to the Semantic Web. Microformats refer to sets of simple, open data formats built upon existing and widely adopted standards, including HTML, CSS and XML. The Semantic Web-based communities have pursued ways to improve the quality and availability of data on the Web, making it possible for more intensive data-integration and more diverse applications that can scale to the size of the Web and allow more powerful mash-ups. The Web-based set of standards that supports this work is known as the Semantic Web stack. "Each approach to "getting your data out there" has its place. But why limit yourself to just one approach if you can benefit, at low cost, from more than one?" GRDDL is the bridge for turning data expressed in an XML format (such as XHTML) into Semantic Web data. With GRDDL, authors transform the data they wish to share into a format that can be used and transformed again for more rigorous applications. GRDDL Use Cases provides insight into why this is useful through a number of scenarios, including scheduling a meeting, comparing information from various retailers before making a purchase, and extracting information from wikis to facilitate e-learning. http://www.w3.org/

SoftCare and CoreMedia announced the integration of their systems – SoftCare K4 and the CoreMedia CMS. This solution crosses system borders to allow publishing houses, agencies and corporate publishers to take advantage of the spectrum of cross-media publishing and to enable content distribution via print, Web and mobile output channels as well as taking advantage of advanced web features. Initially, articles are created and edited in K4. They are then exported using the K4 XML Exporter, at which point the CMS takes over and publishes them using their own layout. At this stage, special online ads can be placed. CoreMedia CMS further extends the Web-based functions to include an automatic Top 10 List, breaking news, full-text search, RSS feeds, and comment and e-mail functionalities, plus an image and video gallery as add-ons to the print edition. The publishing system SoftCare K4 can be integrated into existing production environments and offers existing connections to asset management, newspaper/ad planning and automated output systems as well as to systems for data sourcing and management. The K4 Web Editor offers external editors an additional, browser-based access to the system. SoftCare K4 supports the latest Adobe Creative Suite 3. http://www.coremedia.com, http://www.softcare.de

EditGrid announced the launch of the iPhone Edition of its Web-based spreadsheets. EditGrid subscribers will now be able to easily access and use their online spreadsheets right on their mobile phones. EditGrid recognized that knowledge workers want a spreadsheet application to keep up with the latest figures and not necessarily for data crunching. EditGrid's real-time update (RTU) feature allows users to get the information they need immediately without worrying about syncing files – all files are stored and updated on EditGrid's server. The iPhone Edition of EditGrid is a customized version of EditGrid which enhances mobile usability. Due to the limitation of screen size and speed of iPhone's Safari JavaScript engine, EditGrid was optimized for different usages in three modes: Edit Mode: Allows users to do simple data crunching with better data formatting support. The data inputted are automatically saved to EditGrid's server. View Mode: Enables the best possible performance for users to read their spreadsheets. Hybrid Mode: Allows users to view a larger spreadsheet with simple editing capabilities. To save bandwidth and loading time, EditGrid loads spreadsheet data to the iPhone on demand. By using two-finger scrolling, a signal is sent to the EditGrid server which triggers loading of additional data and smart preload. http://www.editgrid.com/
