New Research from Outsell Gilbane Reveals How Marketers Manage Multilingual Content

Study from Outsell’s Gilbane Services explains what works and what doesn’t forleading global companies

April 5, 2011, Cambridge, MA—Outsell’s Gilbane Services today released its new study on content globalization practices, Multilingual Marketing Content: Growing International Business with Global Content Value Chains. Outsell believes this report is the first study ever of global companies’ practices for managing multilingual content for marketing. It is available for free download at http://gilbane.com.

“Enormous pressures are squeezing today’s global marketers and brand managers to grow international revenue,” said Pep Carrera, senior vice president, technology solutions for Rapp, one of the largest multichannel marketing services networks in the world. “The report from Outsell’s Gilbane Services provides useful insights for any manager dealing with the quality issues, technologies, and costs of multilingual marketing.”

Written by Outsell Gilbane analysts Vince Emery, Karl Kadie and Mary Laplante, Multilingual Marketing Content is based on original primary research aggregating the real-world experiences of organizations that compete in multinational markets. The report describes approaches to increasing the value of content as a key component of strategic brand management and marketing communications, citing examples where industry leaders have succeeded and failed. Four of the key findings explored in the report include:

  • Many companies’ strategies and infrastructure for multilingual marketing content are relatively immature compared to those for non-marketing content.
  • Many marketing projects are, in effect, experiments, with no clear definition of how they will deliver business value.Marketers are being pulled to improve their multilingual marketing content operations by a burning need to enhance the global customer experience.
  • Businesses that improved their marketing content globalization results quickly and cost-effectively have done so by leveraging the infrastructure already in place for product content.

“We expect that our report Multilingual Marketing Content will be valuable for brand and marketing managers, business executives, content strategists, and language professionals who deal with multinational marketing,” said Mary Laplante, vice president and lead analyst, Outsell’s Gilbane Services.

Multilingual Marketing Content is available as a free download from http://gilbane.com. The report is also available from study sponsors Across Systems, ADAM Software, Lionbridge, and SDL. Additional insights are available from the Outsell Gilbane content globalization blog and our content globalization consultants.

Press Release

New Research from Outsell's Gilbane Group Charts Digital Path for Book Publishers

Study provides in-depth look at publisher responses to digital mandates, identifies winning strategies for ebook technologies, processes, and systems

November 11, Cambridge, MA – Outsell's Gilbane Group, the analyst and consulting organization dedicated to content technologies, today announced the release of its latest study, A Blueprint for Book Publishing Transformation: Seven Essential Processes to Re-invent Publishing.

A Blueprint for Book Publishing Transformation delivers deep insight into how publishers are adapting well-established traditional processes to digital publishing. As these processes are usually aided by technology, the study takes aim at the tools and systems publishers have been using and are starting to use. "There are many bright spots, such as production and digital printing, but other process areas lag, are too nascent, or are waiting for industry standards and best practices to coalesce," comments David R. Guenette, Gilbane Senior Analyst and study director for the Blueprint research. "The landscape is particularly challenging for book publishers because of the rapid-fire addition of new channels and business models. There’s intense pressure to codify these models in internal processes and systems even before publishers understand the value of these channels and models for long-term survival."

The key findings explored in the Blueprint report include:

  • Ebook publishing is well-established across all book publishing segments, with significant revenue growth expected over the next five years.
  • "XML Early" is common among book publishers, with many publishers using vendor partners to accomplish digital editorial and production workflow.
  • Single-source content management provides a crucial hedge against changing formats and devices for ebooks.
  • Digital workflow has helped make digital printing—POD, ultra short run, and custom publishing—an important part of content monetization and cost reduction.
  • Integration of the various publishing processes remains elusive to date, but more of the prerequisite capabilities for realizing major cost savings and new product creation through process integration are in place, making process integration a realistic strategic goal over the next several years.

The seven processes examined in the study represent the end-to-end book lifecycle: planning, editorial and production, rights and royalties, manufacturing, marketing and promotion, sales and licensing, and distribution and fulfillment.

Bill Trippe, Vice President and Senior Analyst with Gilbane and co-author of the report, notes that publishers now widely understand the value of XML as a foundational capability for flexible publishing. "More than 80% of the publishers we surveyed either currently use or are planning to use XML to drive digital and print publishing," says Trippe. "Our research for this study and Gilbane’s long history of working with publishers clearly shows that XML First and XML Early strategies are keys to capitalizing on its business value for publishers."

A Blueprint for Book Publishing Transformation is available as a free download from the Gilbane Group website. The report is also available from study sponsors Apatara, Hewlett-Packard, Libre Digital, MarkLogic, North Plains, Oce, and Really Strategies. The research was supported by Book Industry Study Group. Additional insights and advice are provided on Gilbane’s blog on publishing technologies and strategies and through Gilbane's consulting services aimed at helping publishers realize ebook success.

Global customer experience, content multi-purposing key drivers of next-generation XML business applications

September 30, Cambridge, MA – Outsell’s Gilbane Group, the analyst and consulting organization dedicated to content technologies, today announced the release of its latest study, Smart Content in the Enterprise: How Next Generation XML Applications Deliver New Value to Multiple Stakeholders.

Smart Content in the Enterprise offers a unique perspective on the XML market. Rather than focus on why companies adopt XML in the first place, the research examines the factors that contribute to broader adoption across an organization. "XML has delivered business value for more than a decade, but almost always at the departmental level within a single application. We wanted to know why organizations have struggled to move beyond the first silo of success and deploy XML in other areas where it can also deliver benefits, such as customer support," comments Geoffrey Bock, study director and senior analyst with Gilbane.

The research underlying the study revealed that when organizations are successful with broad and valuable deployment, their XML content exhibits a set of common characteristics that make it "smart" in addition to structured. Smart content, as described in the study, is granular at the appropriate level, semantically rich, useful across applications, and meaningful for collaborative interaction.

Dale Waldt, senior analyst with Gilbane and co-author of the report, notes an important shift enabled by smart content. "We're moving from repurposing to multi-purposing," says Waldt. "Defining various uses of content leads to robust data models and enrichment processes that support multiple purposes for the content, allowing it to meet a broader range of business objectives. This is how new value for new stakeholders becomes the payoff for investments in smart content."

Smart Content in the Enterprise identifies a pervasive emphasis on global customer experience as a key driver for smart content. The study explores the implications of smart content for business applications and defines the smart content technology landscape. It also provides guidance for companies who are ready to move beyond a single XML application silo and suggests a framework for developing a smart content roadmap. Case studies on smart content at Citrix, IBM, NetApp, Symitar, and Warrior Gateway round out the report.

Smart Content in the Enterprise draws on in-depth interviews with business and technologies leaders within organizations that have deployed XML, combined with Gilbane’s implementation expertise and deep knowledge of XML markets and technologies. The research will be valuable to managers of XML-based solutions who see a broader opportunity for XML within their organizations. The study will help them learn from the success of others, communicate value, build business cases, and constitute cross-functional teams. The report will also be useful for managers who are in the process of implementing XML and want to ensure that they are designing and building their applications to align squarely with contemporary user and content requirements. The study will also help technology and services providers develop offerings that enable smart content applications, address key issues and challenges, and market and position their products in ways to make their value propositions clear to buyers.

Smart Content in the Enterprise is available as a free download from the Gilbane Group website. The report is also available from study sponsors IBM, JustSystems, MarkLogic, MindTouch, Ovitas, Quark, and SDL. Additional insights and advice are provided on Gilbane’s XML analyst blog and through Gilbane’s XML and smart content consulting services.

Outsell's Gilbane Group Releases New Study on Semantic Software Technology Market

Comprehensive study the first to define complex landscape, key players, and drivers for adoption

September 15, Cambridge, MA – Gilbane Group, a Division of Outsell, Inc., today announced the publication of a new research report, Semantic Software Technologies: Landscape of High Value Applications for the Enterprise.

According to Lynda Moulton, Gilbane Senior Analyst and Consultant and the study’s principle author, “There are close to 100 companies offering specialized semantic software applications or tools to support semantic search platforms. These include vocabulary management, data mining and normalization, and auto-categorization products, and services to build semantic applications. Understanding this complex landscape and matching the right technology to business problems has been a significant challenge for buyers and users.”

Gilbane’s report offers guidance in three principal areas. It defines semantic software, illustrates the applications and tools that are currently viable and being deployed in the enterprise, and describes the circumstances of their selection and use. Key findings of the research underlying the report include observations on the current state of the market, the critical role of skilled human resources for language management and ongoing content curation, and insights into adoption patterns and solutions packaging.

The study will be valuable to three types of readers: potential buyers of semantic software technologies, companies already using or adopting them, and vendors. “In a complex marketplace like semantics, it is important to reach common understanding about what is really available and to explain when a particular class of product is suitable for consideration,” notes Moulton. To that end, the report includes a glossary of terminology and a directory of companies and organizations in the market space. It also features profiles of study sponsors and their offerings. Additional commentary is published on Gilbane’s Enterprise Search blog.

Semantic Software Technologies is available as a free download from the Gilbane Group website. The report is also available from study sponsors Cognition, Expert System, and Linguamatics.

Customer & Collaboration Visionaries Jeremiah Owyang and Dan Rasmus to Keynote Gilbane San Francisco Content Management Conference

Annual Conference Helps Attendees Evaluate the Latest Solutions to Reach and Engage Customers and Foster Collaboration with Customers and Partners

Boston, MA – March 10, 2010 – The seventh annual Gilbane San Francisco Conference (http://gilbanesf.com/) announced today that its lineup of keynote speakers will address the critical issues businesses face in using web technologies and content to more effectively connect with customers and collaborate with colleagues. The upcoming Gilbane San Francisco conference, produced by the Gilbane Group and Lighthouse Seminars, takes place May 18-20, 2010, at The Westin Market Hotel in San Francisco.

Public facing Internet sites are the new corporate front door, where customers, partners and investors engage with the corporate brand and develop perceptions. Intranets, blogs, wikis, portals and social software tools provide knowledge workers increasingly efficient ways to collaborate and share knowledge. Web and enterprise content management permeate every aspect of an organization, and customer and internal-facing applications share requirements that call for a number of enterprise content, publishing and infrastructure technologies, such as multi-lingual, social media, search, and more. Gilbane San Francisco 2010 brings together industry thought leaders from technology, enterprise IT, analyst, and consulting firms who provide attendees with the latest strategies, techniques and practices for successful application of web technologies to improve communications with global customers, employees and partners.

In addition to visionary keynotes, the event features in-depth pre-conference workshops and a main conference providing in-depth coverage of trends and technologies organized in four tracks: Customers & Engagement, Colleagues & Collaboration, Content Technology, and Content Publishing

Opening Keynote:
Our opening keynote session sets the stage for the rest of the conference with presentations & discussion of two of our main themes: engaging customers, and collaborating with colleagues. Prolific blogger and Twitterer Jeremiah Owyang may communicate with more companies on the use of web and social software technologies for connecting with customers than any other individual. Jeremiah has been involved in interactive marketing both as a Web marketer and an analyst at Forrester and now at Altimeter Group. If you want to know how companies are actually using social and web tools to engage with customers, Jeremiah is the go-to guy. Strategist and Author Dan Rasmus has been studying the knowledge worker workplace as an analyst, consultant, and at Microsoft, for decades, and has deep insight into how it has, and will continue, to change. Dan will be talking about two critical areas of collaborating in today's, and tomorrow's, workplace: cross-border, cross-culture collaboration practices, and how to design workplace experiences that will buffer people from complex changes that will likely take place in the future.

Industry Analyst Debate - What's Real, What's Hype, and What's Coming:
We invite industry analysts from different firms to speak at all our events to make sure our conference attendees hear differing opinions from a wide variety of expert sources. A second, third, fourth or fifth opinion will ensure you don't make ill-informed decisions about critical content and information technologies or strategies. This session will be a lively, interactive debate guaranteed to be both informative and fun. Panelists include Frank Gilbane, President, Gilbane Group; Rob Koplowitz, Principal Analyst, Forrester; Hadley Reynolds, Research Director, Search & Digital Marketplace Technologies, IDC; Tony Byrne, Founder, The Real Story Group & CMS Watch; Scott Liewehr, Senior Consultant, Web Content Management, Gilbane Group

“In today’s business environment, every organization has one thing in common - the need to leverage communication and content across multiple customer and partner communities,” said Frank Gilbane, President of the Gilbane Group and moderator of the keynote sessions. “This year’s keynotes share the timely theme of connecting with global customers and colleagues with marketing, product and enterprise content using web and social technologies.”

Sue’s expertise in multilingual content, localization, and project management brings a new voice to our Content Globalization practice, and her insights into helping companies understand what’s involved in technology implementation will serve Gilbane's user clients very well.

Karen’s background in a variety of structured content applications, content analysis, and web analytics will enable her to contribute across several Gilbane practice areas. Her experience as a buyer and implementer of content technologies will be especially valuable as we develop new programs and services that align with Gilbane's market education mission.

"We are thrilled to have Sue, Vince, and Karen join us to help us meet the needs of our growing client base," said Mary Laplante, VP Client Services & Senior Analyst Gilbane. "Vince, Karen, and Sue come to us with stellar credentials and the kind of “been-there-done-that” expertise that is a Gilbane competitive advantage as an analyst and consulting firm."
