March 2008 Archives

The CM Pros Spring Summit will be held June 17, 2008 at the Westin Market Street Hotel, San Francisco, CA, in conjunction with Gilbane San Francisco

Submission Deadline: March 24, 2008

CM Pros is soliciting presentations that address the theme and empower the attendees with tangible and practical real world content management knowledge. Submit a proposal to present or lead a discussion that will provide attendees with strategic and tactical solutions for this unique aspect of content management. This conference is for anyone struggling with the business drivers and technical issues of managing and delivering dynamic content. We seek business and technical presentations that focus on "How To ...", "Lessons Learned", or "Case Studies", and address any of the following topic areas as they relate to the theme and to content management in general:

  • Social Networking
One of the fastest growing trends on the Internet has many companies wondering how they can benefit from this social phenomenon.
  • Web 2.0
A nebulous and often over used term, yet many companies feel they must embrace Web 2.0 to remain competitive.
  • Rich Media
The majority of US households have high-speed Internet connections so companies are using bandwidth intensive interfaces to deliver interactive content.
  • Content Re-use in Multiple Delivery Channels
The utopia of all CMS implementations; create once, use anywhere. Simplistic in theory; yet complex in reality.

Submitting a Proposal
CM Pros welcomes submissions at all levels; many of the conference attendees are experts in their fields, while some are new to content management. Submissions must meet all the requirements. Incomplete submissions will not be reviewed. All sessions must be submitted in the requested abstract format and must be original work of professional quality. Marketing/promotional presentations will not be considered. See the CM Pros Spring Summit site for additional proposal information. Submissions must contain the following:

  • Moderator name and complete contact information (email, phone, mailing address)
  • Round table or workshop title
  • Short Description, 100-word (suitable for marketing purposes)
  • Long Abstract, 300-500 word (suitable for marketing purposes)

Consistency and quality are always the goals with product support content such as technical documentation. Shorter product development cycles that result from growing business demands add to the pressure, often thwarting a documentation team's best efforts. In this global economy, pressure is further heightened by the need to add multiple language outputs to a growing list of multi-channel deliverables.

When documentation creation gets pushed to the end the product lifecycle, with translation following "somewhere" behind it, the risk of mistakes and customer dissatisfaction is high. In fact, inconsistency within source documentation leads to numerous downstream issues and costs in translation. The impact can't be underestimated as multilingual product documentation becomes more and more critical in international vertical markets.

On April 9, 2008 at 8:00 am PT/11:00 am ET/ 4 pm GMT, the Gilbane Group discusses translation-oriented authoring as a means to stop the "ripple" effects -- higher costs, poor quality, and inefficient processes -- caused by generating content without considering multilingual delivery requirements. I will be doing a Webinar tomorrow with Jake Sorofman of JustSystems on this topic as part of the AIIM Wednesday Webinars series. Dynamic publishing is a well understood issue for Gilbane readers, but the interesting news here is that the technology continues to evolve and expand in capability. I'll give some background on the topic and discuss some of our recent thinking, and Jake will provide a snapshot of JustSystems' solutions in this area.

You can get more information and register here.

For Immediate Release:
Authored by Search Expert Stephen Arnold, report includes practical advice, market map and profiles of 24 companies

Cambridge MA, March 4, 2008. Gilbane Group Inc. today announced the launch of a new special report, "Beyond Search: What to do When Your Enterprise Search System Doesn't Work", by Stephen Arnold. The 250-page report also includes a "beyond search" vendor market map, a chapter on Google’s next generation plans for behind-the-firewall search, and a glossary. For a more complete description and to sign-up to be notified when you can purchase the report at the introductory price, go to http://gilbane.com/beyond-search.html.

According to Lynda Moulton, Gilbane's Lead Analyst for Enterprise Search "Over the past decade, companies and government agencies that have invested in major search technology have done so at great expense. This study recognizes that there are many large search systems out there that are in need of serious remediation or replacement. Mr. Arnold devotes over 40 pages to remediation options before presenting 24 'beyond search' technologies. These include both mature versions of established search products that have evolved to a stage of easier deployment, implementation and maintenance, and some new entrants that support highly specialized retrieval challenges within organizations. He leaves the reader with a feast for thought about how to meet enterprise search needs head on with both fix and replace options". See Lynda's blog at http://gilbane.com/search_blog/.
