Microsoft Unveils Office Business Application Strategy, Marrying Enterprise Applications with Office
6/12/2006

Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) outlined its strategy to foster the development of Office Business Applications, "People-Ready" business solutions that allow information workers to use their Microsoft Office environment for accessing and interacting with business applications and structured processes. The development of Office Business Applications is made possible by new platform capabilities in the 2007 Microsoft Office system. These capabilities are called Office Business Application (OBA) Services and consist of: workflow; search; the Business Data Catalog; a new, extensible user interface; Microsoft Office Open XML Formats; and the Web Site and Security Framework. These services can be used to extend Microsoft Office system investments in business intelligence, unified communications and collaboration, and enterprise content management, as well as other business applications by ISVs or corporate developers. Microsoft also announced LOBi (line-of-business interoperability) for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server. LOBi for SharePoint Server is a future set of capabilities that will work together with Microsoft Office client applications and Office SharePoint Server 2007. LOBi enables deep structured process integration with Office client applications, the ability for people to update transactional applications from within Microsoft Office, and the ability to more securely take structured business processes and data offline. A technical preview of LOBi for Office SharePoint Server will be available at the end of 2006. Microsoft also announced plans to deliver the BizTalk Adapter Pack, a set of line-of-business application adapters that simplify the connectivity between the 2007 Microsoft Office system and other applications. Office Business Application Services are currently available for beta testing (via the 2007 Office system release). A technical preview of LOBi for Office SharePoint Server is scheduled to be available at the end of 2006. Developers can get started today creating Office Business Applications using the 2007 Office system, and then expand those capabilities with LOBi when it becomes available. Socialtext Partners with Dan Bricklin on wikiCalc
6/9/2006

Socialtext announced they have partnered with Dan Bricklin (inventor of VisiCalc) to exclusively distribute, redistribute and co-develop wikiCalc, the social spreadsheet. One way that a wiki, and wikiCalc, enables social use of a tool without imposing structure is the properties of transparency and memory. In a wiki, a copy of every edit is saved with attribution. This supports trust and accountability. Given the nature of spreadsheets, wikiCalc takes this one step further, creating a revision history of every single edit to any cell, not just when you save and the undos before. This not only holds the promise of tracking down errors, but provides an audit trail. Bricklin just released wikiCalc Beta under an Open Source GPL distribution. Right now you can, use and modify a web-based spreadsheet of your own. In the coming days Socialtext will release wikiCalc under a more liberal and commercial friendly distribution. They see great promise for an enterprise-friendly wikiCalc. Socialtext also announced their Open Source Edition, functionally equivalent to their commercial wikis for users, will be released next month at OSCON. Wikiwyg, wikiCalc and the Socialtext Open Source Edition will all be released under the same OSI complaint Open Source license, based upon the Mozilla Public License. http://socialtext.com, http://www.softwaregarden.com/wkcalpha/

IBM Announces Release of DB2 9 (codename: Viper)
6/8/2006

IBM announced DB2 9, codenamed Viper, a new data server that includes "pureXML" technology that they think will be a fundamental shift in how XML data is stored and managed. pureXML is a departure from storing XML as an object or shredding xml data to a relational table. DB2 9 handles XML as a new data type stored in its natural hierarchy, allowing clients to manage both conventional relational data and pure XML data. Another important capabaility is the DB2 9 storage compression technology that provides a new row-based approach for compressing data objects, resulting in significant disk, I/O and memory savings. According to IBM, more information is in XML format, or directly storable as XML format, than in relational data tables. Most of this XML information is neither protected nor utilized to the same extent as other data because doing so has been cost prohibitive. DB2 V9.1 introduces a hybrid data server, serving data from both pure relational and pureXML structures. This technology delivers application performance and development time/cost savings that makes XML data cost effective. To provide this support for managing XML data, DB2 V9.1 features new XML-specific storage management, indexing, and optimization techniques. It also interfaces to a wide range of programming languages, allowing users to optionally validate their XML data prior to storage, and extends popular database utilities important for importing data and administering the environment. DB2 V9.1 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows delivers an enhanced set of application development tools to simplify database application development and ease application deployment, including a new Developer Workbench, enhanced functionality for Visual Studio 2005, and XML and XQuery support. DB2 V9.1 also introduces a unified debugger, rapid application deployment with a lightweight runtime client, and many other features that allow you to develop applications that work across different DB2 data servers. Administrators have improved control over database security with the fine-grained, label-based security and a new security administrator authority level. B2 V9.1 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows will be available electronically July 28, 2006, with media and documentation available September 22, 2006. http://www.ibm.com

Meadows Publishing Solutions Releases AutoPrice Module for Adobe InDesign
6/6/2006

Meadows Publishing Solutions (MPS) announced that they have released an AutoPrice software module for Adobe InDesign users working on either Macintosh or PC platforms. AutoPrice provides sophisticated linking of QuarkXPress, and now Adobe InDesign, documents to any external database of information. As the name implies, AutoPrice is engineered to perform pricing updates on catalogs, retail flyers and similar publications. It has also been used for updating phone lists, time tables, or any other type of information that can be referenced by a 'key value' such as a product number (SKU). AutoPrice works by letting the user establish 'placeholders' within new or existing QuarkXPress or InDesign documents which are linked to a database record. For products which have different price breaks, AutoPrice allows the user to specify additional search criteria for differentiating between the variations. Unlike other software products which require linking to a specific text box, AutoPrice enables linking to any range of text anywhere in a document. This means that the user does not have to restructure their layout to accommodate the links, making design and editing easy to manage. Each placeholder appears as a blue underscore which floats with the text as changes are made. Placeholders can be edited and styled like normal text and once assigned, they are saved with the document for simplifying future updates. To update a document, users only need to select 'Update Document' from under the AutoPrice menu and the latest information is extracted from the database and inserted automatically. With AutoPrice, Documents can be updated in flat-file, or ODBC mode. The ODBC module allows users to program their own SQL queries and store them with placeholders inside of the QuarkXPress or InDesign documents. This module is compatible with most major database packages, and provides true bi-directional data flow between the documents and the database system. AutoPrice also provides a built-in report generator capable of generating reports which include a comprehensive list of every item that was updated, its current value, page number, missing items, and error codes. AutoPrice is now available from Meadows Publishing Solutions and its distributors. http://www.meadowsps.com

You can now quickly generate a large set of XML document samples based on a given XML Schema using the XML Schema instance generator tool. The HTML documentation for XML Schema has been improved. The generated schema diagram images contain image maps allowing to click directly on a diagram component to navigate to the documentation for that component. The documentation of a definition includes an "Used By" section with links to the other definitions which refer to it. Navigation is possible in both directions between a schema and the included/imported ones. The support for XQuery execution over an XML native database was extended by adding the following engines: X-Hive/DB XML Database, MarkLogic XML Database and TigerLogic XML Database. Other new features include the possibility to generate a brief documentation listing the services, bindings, port types and messages defined in a WSDL file, the addition of a dockable view called Dynamic Help that changes its content automatically to the relevant help page for the focused editor, view or dialog and support to configure the background color for syntax highlighting tokens. Liquid Machines Announces Document Control 6.0
6/5/2006

Liquid Machines, Inc. announced the availability of Liquid Machines Document Control 6.0. Using a web-based interface, business users can define corporate policies that control access to and usage of unstructured content such as Office documents, Visio diagrams, and CAD files. In support of many customers increasing compliance initiatives, Liquid Machines Document Control 6.0 adds detailed application-level auditing capabilities that allows evidentiary-quality compliance reports as required by information protection regulations (i.e. HIPAA, SEC 17a-4, GLB, SB1386). Additionally, Liquid Machines Document Control 6.0 extends RMS protection to over 65 applications and file formats while offering end-users full use of native application functions such as 'cut/copy/paste' and 'convert to .pdf' operations. Enterprise-controlled policies differ from RMS templates by adding support for auditing, allowing policy administration by business users, limiting individual user abilities to remove protection, and enabling role-based content expiration. Role-based policies give the enterprise a way to manage large numbers of users. Policy administrators can quickly add or remove Active Directory users or groups to a role without having to change the Active Directory itself. Audit data is stored in the SQL Server database and can be accessed by business administrators through a web-based query. Auditing is an option that may be set independently for each policy and results can be exported for use in third-party reporting tools. Liquid Machines Policy Droplet control provides consistency of user experience across all applications. Users can select enterprise-controlled policies, ad hoc policies, or RMS templates. The governing policy is always visible so users can see if and how the document is protected with out taking any explicit action. Liquid Machines enables RMS protection not only within a single document, but as protected content moves between managed applications. This enables users to securely cut/copy and paste protected content within the same document, as well as paste protected content into another application. Users can also convert protected documents to .pdf files or save the document to non-native file formats without losing protection. Liquid Machines Document Control 6.0 is available immediately. http://www.liquidmachines.com
