XyEnterprise Announces Pre-release of Content@View

XyEnterprise announced the pre-release of Content@View - a software solution suite for publishing and delivering interactive electronic technical manuals or publications (IETMs or IETPs) online or via CD-ROM. Content@View provides a complementary content distribution channel for XyEnterprise's XML Professional Publisher (XPP), as well as XSL-FO composition engines, rounding out the suite of end-to-end solutions for technical publications. While Content@View is fully integrated with XyEnterprise's Content@ content management software, it can also be deployed as a standalone product or publishing output channel for other SGML/XML content management solutions. The Content@View suite offers a customizable interface, and is capable of handling any SGML or XML document type. It includes an indexing and rendering engine (Content@Gen) for generating on-the-fly, new and revised electronic technical publications, as well as an optional reasoning module for diagnostics and prognostics. The reasoning module reduces the number of false component removals and includes an expert "learning" feature that enables less experienced technicians to benefit from information resources available through Content@View. This module also provides automated troubleshooting tree creation from a visual system representation or an XML file, and can output S1000D-compliant process modules. IETMs or IETPs have been in use for many years, primarily in the DoD and commercial aviation sectors where large volumes of complex technical information must be referenced for repairing or performing scheduled maintenance on mission critical equipment such as aircraft. The information resource is consulted in a non-linear fashion as the sequence of presentation is determined by inputs from the user, external sources or events (e.g., diagnostics or fault codes). IETPs, which are distributed online and integrated with other applications, allow single-click access to parts inventory and other engineering & maintenance systems, further reducing the time required for maintenance and repair. http://www.xyenterprise.com

Inxight Launches Search Extender for Google

Inxight Software launched Inxight Search Extender for Google, an application that allows Google Search Appliance and Google Desktop users to find relevant documents faster and locate hidden information in document sets and individual documents. Powered by Inxight's ThingFinder extraction technology, Inxight Search Extender for Google automatically clusters search results on-the-fly, enabling users to filter their results sets by the people, companies, places, concepts and other information contained within them. The most important details in a document also augment keyword-in-context summaries, revealing hidden content within documents. And Search Extender automatically creates an automated index for all documents in the "cached document view", making it simpler to locate the relevant people, companies and other information contained in very long documents. Inxight Search Extender for Google also enhances keyword-in-context summaries with an automated "Top Mentions" list, revealing the most important people, places, companies and other information contained within the full text of a document. An automated document index makes it easier to locate that one mention of a potential new competitor within a large pdf file. Customizable right-click actions allow companies to also customize and extend the solution to do tasks like click on an address and access Google Earth to pinpoint addresses, or click on a company name to access LexisNexis or Hoover's lookups. Inxight Search Extender for Google will be generally available in June 2006. http://www.inxight.com

Vivisimo Introduces Velocity 5

Vivisimo introduced Velocity 5, an enterprise search platform designed to provide organizations with the flexibility and control of enterprise software and the simplicity and innovation of consumer search. Velocity 5 is the cornerstone for Vivisimo's new "search done right" strategy, designed to ensure Vivisimo meets the needs of both enterprise end-users and administrators. With Velocity 5, end-users can discover and explore more through simple searches. The enhanced solution lets users access and manipulate both structured and unstructured content at the same time by using new graphical interface controls. These controls put users in command of their own search experience and new meta-data visualization techniques, combined with clustering, give users the big picture for a faster, but more thorough, exploration of search results. Velocity 5 also provides architectural enhancements. Administrators gain flexibility in configuring the system to use meta-data to answer queries and group search results in ways that are meaningful to end-users. Structured and unstructured content elements can be extracted, normalized, and combined, regardless of location, to create virtual documents. In addition, Velocity 5 lets administrators control access not only at the document level, but also inside the documents at the content level. Other Velocity 5 architectural and administrative functionality includes formula-based sorting, filtering and grouping capabilities, and smart summarization functionality. Velocity 5 pricing can start as low as $25K annually. The product will be generally available in 30 days. http://vivisimo.com

Recommind Launches MindServer 4.2 for Enterprises

Recommind announced MindServer 4.2, the latest release of its MindServer platform. The platform transforms high volumes of discrete files, documents, and messages contained in numerous enterprise applications into manageable information relevant to a user's specific purpose. MindServer 4.2 now provides enterprise users with search-based application integration, multi-level security, and Web 2.0 usability. The MindServer 4.2 platform incorporates a search-based application integration framework to solve complex, large-enterprise information search challenges. Based on the user's search request, the framework uses inference technology to combine and integrate otherwise-unrelated documents and files from a wide range of sources into a set of context-based results that precisely relate to the user's request. In the first application developed on this framework, Recommind's Projects & Expertise allows users to find information related to documents, projects, and people by drawing inferences from relationships mapped between these objects. For example, a user can find individuals with specific skills, based on projects they have worked on and documents they have authored. Search terms provide context for results that cannot be derived from a static resume profile. MindServer 4.2 respects the security of native systems, while allowing additional security rules to be layered on top, thus enabling organizations to effectively implement complex access rules. Enhanced Smart Filtering features provide a simple AJAX (Asynchronous Javascript and XML)-based interface, enabling usersto quickly drill down into details of a specific result set. Recommind's MindServer 4.2 platform is built on the company's Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis (PLSA) algorithm. The platform scales to serve millions of users and search terabytes of data. The MindServer 4.2 platform is immediately available. http://www.recommind.com

Stellent Releases New Version of Site Studio

Stellent, Inc. (Nasdaq:STEL) released a new version of its multi-site management application Stellent Site Studio. Site Studio, a component of the Stellent Universal Content Management system, provides a software infrastructure for creating, maintaining and deploying multiple internal and external Web sites. The new version of Site Studio further offers Web site managers in-context site assembly and organization capabilities through a new Site Studio Manager tool. Additional Site Studio enhancements include built-in usage analytics and an expanded search engine offering. The new Site Studio Manager tool enables organizations to more easily distribute control of day-to-day site maintenance to business units. It is a completely Web-based application designed specifically for Web site managers, and it leverages asynchronous JavaScript and XML (Ajax) techniques for a rich user interface. Site Studio Manager empowers Web site managers with in-context site management features, allowing them to organize their Web site by modifying navigation; adding sections, such as those used for blogs; and selecting layouts from a pre-defined list of templates. The site managers navigate to the area of the Web site requiring modification, where they authenticate and begin rearranging and updating their site based upon security permissions. Web site developers can control and configure the appropriate amount of Site Studio Manager functionality exposed on a particular site. Additionally, to address the increasing importance of search engine optimization, Site Studio gives Web site managers the responsibility of ensuring the right keywords and search terms are available on each Web page and site. The new version of Stellent Site Studio offers a tighter integration with Stellent's repository analytics tool, Stellent Content Tracker, making it easier to incorporate service and content usage analytics within Web sites. With the new version of Site Studio, Stellent offers multiple search engines within a multi-site Web content management solution. Organizations can now power search capabilities within their Site Studio Web sites by using FAST Search and Transfer or Verity, or from a number of database options, such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle or IBM DB2. http://www.stellent.com

JupiterResearch Finds That RSS Spending Grows Despite Low Perceived Adoption Rates

JupiterResearch announced it found that 63 percent of large companies plan to syndicate content via Really Simple Syndication (RSS) by the end of 2006. According to a new report: "RSS Comes of Age: Budgeting, Deploying, and Measuring RSS", currently only 29 percent of large companies (with more than $50 million in annual revenues) publish content via RSS. The growth of RSS is also highlighted by the fact that 48 percent of current RSS publishers are spending $250,000 or more to deploy and manage syndicated content. However, JupiterResearch has also found that spending at this level is inconsistent with the current rate of adoption. RSS users are heavier consumers of online media than traditional online users, and thus represent a prime demographic for online media publishers. Marketers can either modify their RSS feeds to individual users through individualized RSS or create traditional broadcast feeds. Individualized RSS feeds are subscriber-centric and created in much the same way as targeted e-mail campaigns, including all of the measurement benefits associated with e-mail marketing. http://www.jupiterresearch.com

Sonic Foundry Inc. (NASDAQ:SOFO) announced new capabilities to Mediasite.com. The latest enhancements include the ability to search for specific keywords that are contained within the graphical content window of a rich media presentation. Sonic Foundry's Mediasite is a communication medium for delivering critical information and sharing knowledge. The Mediasite webcasting and content management system automates the capture and delivery of presentations and lectures via the web. The new search advances are currently deployed on all publicly-available presentations.
JBoss Adds WSRP Support to JBoss Portal

JBoss, Inc. announced JBoss Portal 2.4, which adds support for the Web Services for Remote Portlets (WSRP) specification, a standard for enterprise portals and service-oriented architectures (SOAs). Supporting both the Java portlet API (JSR-168) and now WSRP, JBoss Portal is an extensible portal framework that integrates dynamic Web pages, applications and content within reusable portlets. Instead of bundling portlets and the portal into a single application, users can deploy portlets remotely and let the portal consume portlets as needed via WSRP. WSRP support in JBoss Portal 2.4 extends to both the producer, i.e., portlet containers, and the consumer, which is the system communicating with presentation-oriented Web services on behalf of users. Version 2.4 supports service description and markup interfaces and implicit cloning for both producers and consumers. In addition, version 2.4 extends support on the consumer side to standard window states and mode and the registration interface. The company also announced that it has joined OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards), the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and WS-I (Web Services Interoperability). The JBoss community is also enhancing the JEMS platform with related technologies such as portlets and content management systems that enable enterprises to pick and choose the extensions that make the most sense for their portal applications. A library of portlets, themes and layouts contributed by the community is available. Licensed under the open source GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL), JBoss Portal is free to download and use for both development and production deployments. http://www.jboss.com, http://www.portletswap.com

ISO and IEC Approve OpenDocument OASIS Standard

The OpenDocument OASIS Standard (also known as ODF - OpenDocument Format), a format which enables users of varying office suites to freely exchange documents, has been approved for release as an ISO and IEC International Standard. OpenDocument was balloted through the Joint Technical Committee on Information Technology (JTC1) of the International Standards Organization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The OASIS OpenDocument submission has been given the designation, ISO/IEC 26300. OpenDocument defines an XML file format for office applications. Suitable for text, spreadsheets, charts, graphs, presentations, and databases, the standard frees documents from their applications-of-origin, enabling them to be exchanged, retrieved, and edited with any OpenDocument-compliant software or tool. In May 2005, OpenDocument was ratified as an OASIS Standard and subsequently submitted by OASIS to the ISO/IEC JTC 1, Information technology, subcommittee SC 34, Document description and processing languages. As ISO/IEC 26300, the standard will continue to be maintained and advanced by the OASIS OpenDocument Technical Committee and the recently formed OASIS ODF Adoption Committee, both of which remain open to participation from users, suppliers, government agencies, and individuals. Current members of OASIS committees focusing on OpenDocument include representatives of Adobe, IBM, Intel, Novell, Oracle, and Sun Microsystems, as well as government agencies and other organizations, such as the Chanfeng Open Standards Platform Software Alliance in China, National Informatics Center of the Government of India, Netherlands Tax and Customs Administration, Royal National Institute for the Blind, and Duke University. http://www.oasis-open.org, http://www.iso.org

Stibo Catalog Announces STEP 4.8

Stibo Catalog announced the next generation of STEP. With STEP 4.8 Stibo Catalog will release a new merchandising planning module to help catalogers drive sales. STEP Merchandiser gives product managers on-demand visibility and lets them analyze product performance of products and pages. The tool lets merchandisers pre-plan pages, as well as initiate product, image and copy writing workflows. Designed to tear down the walls between product managers and creatives, STEP Merchandiser will help reduce review cycles and increase the speed to market of new promotions and multiple versions. STEP Document Author is a new optional module designed to create documents such as data sheets and provide detailed information about a product that will often include tables, diagrams and long descriptive text and editorial text. Data sheets are updated regularly and reused throughout the life of a product. These characteristics lead to publishing workflows that can be very different to those used when producing catalogs and other direct marketing publications. The new tool will include an authoring interface within STEP PIM that provides both creation and reuse of data within a document format STEP'n'design will provide a print publishing tool for documents enabling a multi-page document to be paginated fully formatted with a single drag & drop. STEP 4.8 will support print publishing with QuarkXPress v7 and Adobe InDesign CS2 as well as Quark DDS and Adobe InDesign Server. Other enhancements will include Proof views in STEP PIM, Image Workflows, user password authentication using LDAP and support of external digital asset management systems via Asset Push. Stibo Catalog will be working with selected customers on testing STEP 4.8 and expects to commercially release the solution in Q4, 2006. http://www.stibocatalog.com

CambridgeDocs Announces Server-Side, Java-Based Microsoft Word to PDF Publishing Using XML

CambridgeDocs announced xDoc Server Version 2.02, and with it the ability to publish Microsoft Word .DOC files to PDF in a cross-platform environment. The Java-based xDoc Server can be called from any J2EE application server, including the popular platforms IBM WebSphere, BEA WebLogic and Apache Tomcat. Organizations can now process and publish high volumes of Microsoft Word content on Windows, Linux and Solaris serves - free of the licensing and performance issues related to installing Microsoft Office or Adobe Acrobat or Distiller on a server. This links business users' preferences for Microsoft Word into IT departments who are consolidating servers and implementing applications ranging from contract generation to custom publishing. Previous generations of PDF publishing have relied on direct "print-stream" approaches, which rely on the original desktop applications "print to" a PDF format. By using Java and XML, the multi-threaded xDoc Server can also merge individual Word files, add data from databases into document "templates", and publish as XML, HTML, or Microsoft RTF. A benefit of using XML as the file format transformation medium for xDoc Server is it helps companies in maintain corporate branding for document "templates" for policies, applications or contracts that are created in Microsoft Word, and that then require database information to be merged into these "templates" as part of a multi-threaded J2EE application. In these scenarios, the documents can be concatenated or merged together as necessary before being published to PDF and thereby retain their corporate "look and feel". http://www.cambridgedocs.com

Eedo Extends Cross-Media Authoring & Publishing for Single Source Content Creation and Delivery

Eedo Knowledgeware announced the extension of its cross-media authoring and publishing capabilities to provide customers with a single source for content creation and delivery which allows users to create and maintain one single set of information for a range of different outputs. ForceTen's architecture makes it possible to directly view, edit and deploy "live" content from the XML repository at runtime and allows real time management of cross media publishing content. Content can either be edited in the print domain or in the e-learning domain with changes and updates immediately reflected on the other side. This does not mean that online and offline content has to be identical, content can be highly adaptive and allows for the best to be brought out in each chosen medium. ForceTen has further extended its print functionality to support the Darwin Information Typing Standard (DITA). DITA is an open source XML-based framework for designing and delivering well-structured content efficiently and consistently in a single-sourcing environment. Information is organized and stored as topics which can then be re-used as building blocks of content. Eedo's ForceTen Learning Content Management System provides a workflow development toolset for the creation, capture, management and transfer of knowledge within an organization with its knowledge repository and coupled with tools such as authoring, knowledge sharing, workflow management, simulation, content management and globalization features. http://www.eedo.com
