Gilbane Boston Adds Live Interview on Massachusetts OpenDocument Format Controversy
11/29/2005

Lighthouse Seminars and Bluebill Advisors announced that the Gilbane Boston Conference taking place this week has added a special live interview on Massachusetts OpenDocument format controversy. David Berlind, Executive Editor of ZDNet, will interview Morgan Reed, Vice President of the Association for Competitive Technology (ACT) live on the stage in the exhibit area of the Gilbane Conference at the Essex ballroom at Westin Copley in Boston. Thursday, December 1, 1:00 p.m. The State of Massachusetts is currently embroiled in a controversy about its decision to standardize on the OASIS OpenDocument Format (ODF). ODF competes with the Microsoft Office format, and the decision is strongly opposed by Microsoft. The Association for Competitive Technology (ACT), a lobbying organization focused on the "...interests of small and mid-size entrepreneurial technology companies..." also opposes the State's decision. David will quiz Morgan why ACT is supporting Microsoft's position. The Massachusetts decision is being watched very closely by other state and national governments as well as private industry, and if it stands, it will have dramatic effects on both the technology governments buy, and on the way they manage and store all their documents. This interview is a chance to hear what is really at stake, and why a lobbying organization for small technology companies would support Microsoft's position. The interview is free for all expo visitors. The contact for Press/Media Sponsors is Evan Weisel, (703) 628-5754, evan@w2comm.com. http://www.lighthouseseminars.com/gilbane_boston_05/ConferenceProgram.html

Tarari Announces RAX-XSLT
11/16/2005

Tarari Inc. announced an Early Adopter Program and general availability of its XSLT processing engines, named RAX-XSLT that are designed and optimized for Web Services and transactional XML processing. RAX-XSLT is a new addition to Tarari's Random Access XML (RAX) family of XML Content Processors. Tarari's Content Processors are components that are designed to accelerate and harden the processing of XML on network devices, switches, appliances, blades, and servers. RAX-XSLT is now available as both a silicon-based component and a "pure software" library. A new Tarari XSLT Script Analysis Profiler, also included with RAX-XSLT, helps developers optimize performance by eliminating script "hotspots" that reduce processing speeds. RAX-XSLT automatically detects Tarari's XML RAX Content Processor, available on a PCI/PCI-X board that plugs into an available server or network appliance slot. The RAX Content Processor provides instant and transparent hardware (silicon) acceleration for processor-exhausting XML processing tasks such as document parsing, XPath processing, schema validation, XML security, XML content-based routing and XSLT. RAX-XSLT is capable of sensing when acceleration silicon is available, and transparently switches over to hardware-accelerated operation at that time. RAX-XSLT is compliant with W3C XSLT 1.1, JAXP, and eXSLT. Developers who sign up for Tarari's RAX-XSLT Early Adopter Program by the end of December can purchase the pure-software version of the RAX-XSLT Development Kit for $895. Exegenix Annouces Document Migration Toolkit for DB2 "Viper"
11/16/2005

Exegenix announced that it has enabled its XML conversion technology to simplify the migration of unstructured material into structured XML data in IBM's next version of DB2 code-named "Viper". With DB2 Viper IBM is adding a Native XML store in its DB2 repository, taking a more holistic approach to combine XML and relational systems. XML support is incorporated deeper in the DB2 data engine than can be achieved via content shredding or BLOB storage. Data storage is centralized for applications with broad capabilities that support both structured content modules and tabular data. Exegenix's intelligent conversion technology uses visual cues to uncover each document's structure automatically. People rarely have problems determining the hierarchical structure of any document they encounter, because they look at a document as a whole, taking into consideration each graphical object's format, position, and context. Exegenix technology does the same thing it interprets a document's logical structure based on the appearance and position of its components, with no dependency on consistently formatted input. This rules-free XML construction process requires no mapping, no scripting, and no programming. Exegenix has incorporated this conversion technology into the Exegenix Document Migration Toolkit for DB2, which emulates the "extract, transform, load" methodology commonly employed for structured data migration. The Exegenix Document Migration Toolkit for DB2 is available to beta testers via an IBM-supplied registration and password, at the secure portal http://www.exegenix.com/db2

Siderean Announces New Solution for Metadata Generation & Harvesting to Support Navigation of Digital Content
11/16/2005

Siderean Software announced a product and services solution for extracting and aligning metadata from large amounts of unstructured and structured data based on the IBM Unstructured Information Management Architecture (UIMA). The new Seamark Metadata Assembly Process Platform (MAPP) improves digital content navigation capabilities by expanding and enriching available metadata so Seamark Navigator can present more accurate and complete scope of available content and context for accessing information. Seamark Navigator offers a harvesting back-end for accessing and generating metadata prior to loading it into its store. The existing harvester is best suited for applications where the metadata is reasonably evolved and well-organized outside Seamark Navigator, requiring little transformation and processing before incorporating the feed into the store. For more complex environments, where large volumes of diverse and unorganized digital assets must be processed for navigation, a more formalized framework is needed to manage and align the metadata representation to the business. This new solution uniquely combines the richness of the semantic Web with existing Web services and UIMA standards. Seamark MAPP is a configurable framework for generating and analyzing metadata from diverse sources including file systems, content management solutions, databases, Web pages, RSS feeds and blogs. Seamark MAPP is expected to be generally available before the end of the year. http://www.siderean.com

Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) launched Windows Desktop Search enabled for enterprise deployment, which allows corporate information workers to find and retrieve what they're looking for on their personal computers, in e-mail and on network file shares from a single starting point. Microsoft's vision is to enable a complete enterprise search experience with search across the PC and e-mail through Windows Desktop Search, across the enterprise intranet environment with Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2003, and across the Web with MSN Search. Microsoft plans to continue expanding the capabilities of Windows Desktop Search and augment them with Windows Live services to search across new data sources and provide the future opportunity to build services on top of the desktop platform. The new enterprise version of Windows Desktop Search takes the consumer version of the product offering and provides a simple way to deploy and manage this product across the enterprise environment. Enterprise customers have the option to deploy the MSN Search Toolbar, which provides a new beta feature that gives people the ability to see integrated Windows Desktop Search results within Microsoft Office Outlook. IT managers can customize Windows Desktop Search and the MSN Search Toolbar to allow users to switch the scope of their search experience from their desktop to the Web or to a corporate intranet, all from one ubiquitous search box. These products have been designed to respect the privacy of multiple users on a single PC by utilizing the Windows authentication and user account management infrastructure. IT professionals can deploy, customize and manage these search capabilities via Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 or third-party deployment tools. IT professionals can also extend Windows Desktop Search to index additional information sources and file types using IFilters and protocol handlers that are documented on the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) Web site. Enterprises can tap into additional product assistance through Microsoft Product Support Services. Currently supported in 15 languages, with others available soon, Windows Desktop Search for the enterprise can be downloaded for free with a Windows License at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/desktopsearch/enterprise

Bitform Releases SDK to Provide Access to Unstructured Data Locked in Complex File Formats
11/8/2005

Bitform Technology Inc. announced the availability of Bitform Extract SDK, a software component for high-performance access to the contents, including text, metadata and content structure information, of the most important file types used by global organizations. Cross platform support and a flexible API make Bitform Extract SDK a tool for a broad range of solutions that need access to file content. Target applications include analysis and inspection for security and compliance solutions and text extraction for indexing, categorization and other search, knowledge management and content management processes. On the surface, content extraction can be confused with "text filtering". It's a relatively simple task to develop a program that opens files and treats every element inside as text. This approach can produce impressive performance figures with regard to gigabytes of files processed per hour, but precision and accuracy suffer tremendously. Complex binary file formats such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF contain thousands of internal structures that can either be bypassed by a simple text filter - thus causing incomplete analysis of content - or can be incorrectly treated as text - thereby producing false positives. Bitform's approach of completely modeling supported file types and taking into account the unique structure of specific formats produces high precision with performance that meets market needs in multiple application segments. For security, policy and compliance applications, Bitform Extract SDK can be combined with Bitform's metadata and hidden information inspection tool, Bitform Secure SDK, to provide a comprehensive content extraction, inspection and remediation solution. Bitform Extract SDK is available immediately. http://www.bitform.net

W3C Issues XSLT 2.0, XPath 2.0 and XQuery 1.0 Candidate Recommendations
11/3/2005

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) published eight documents in the XML family as Candidate Recommendations, sending a signal to the developer community that the new features are ready for implementation. XSLT 2.0 is a major revision to the XSL Transformations language. XSLT transforms XML content into other formats, including other XML formats. As an example, one may use XSLT to transform XML output from a database into an XHTML Web site or set of print-ready XSL-FO documents. XSLT 2.0 standardizes many features that were previously only available as extensions, such as the ability to create multiple output documents or to create user-defined XPath functions. With stronger support for internationalization and richer tools for the programmer, XSLT 2.0 is better suited for the large-scale mission-critical deployment for which XSLT 1.0 is already being used. In addition to new functionality, XSLT 2.0 introduces strong typing and supports the optional use of W3C XML Schema. Like XSLT 2.0, XML Query shares the use of W3C XML Schema to give a strongly-typed programming or scripting language and relies on XPath 2.0 as the selection vocabulary. With XML Query, one can run cross-vendor cross-database joins between multiple forms of data, including XML documents, XML-native stores, and relational database tables. XSLT 2.0 and XML Query 1.0 provide a standard for database integration. The Java Community Process has released initial work on XQJ, the XQuery API for Java, and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has already incorporated XML Query into SQL in part 14 of ISO SQL (SQL/XML). http://www.w3.org/2005/10/xslt-xquery-xpath-cr-pressrelease

CrownPeak also automates the process of adding WebTrends SmartSource tags to web pages to minimize missing or erroneous tags. The CrownPeak-WebTrends integrated solution is available immediately, and is sold by both WebTrends and CrownPeak's sales teams and channel partners. http://crownpeak.com, http://www.webtrends.com

IBM Acquires iPhrase
11/1/2005

IBM announced it has acquired the business of iPhrase Systems, Inc. Financial details were not disclosed. iPhrase develops software that improves e-commerce sales, online service and support, and call center productivity by allowing Web site users to more easily find answers, make purchases and solve problems without expert assistance. For example, retailers use iPhrase technology to help interpret and understand online customer queries, even if they are misspelled or contain jargon. iPhrase software also enables merchandisers to dynamically generate customized Web pages with relevant products and shopping cart links, based on individual customer needs. iPhrase's technology is compliant with Unstructured Information Management Architecture, developed by IBM Research that provides an open framework for the composition of sophisticated analytic applications that discover and leverage meaning from unstructured information. iPhrase software can tailor information specifically for the industry or domain in which it is used, providing a higher-level understanding of user queries. It adapts findings and results and presents them in a format that is easy to use and understand. iPhrase software complements IBM's existing technology for delivering information in context through search and text analysis of enterprise databases, content management systems, file systems, collaboration systems and external web sites. http://www.ibm.com
