Astoria Software announced Astoria XML Content Management Platform Version 4.4, adding new features for the publishing of large, complex documents that are changed often, such as technical service documents for medical equipment and flight operations manuals for airplanes. Among the new capabilities of Astoria Version 4.4 are expanded wide area network (WAN) capabilities for more robust support of networked and remote users, greater scalability to accommodate the largest XML documents, and expanded support for flight operations and airline maintenance applications in the commercial aerospace market. A new Table of Contents feature has been added that allows for large XML documents and content to be initially displayed as a table of contents, with links to full content. Large documents with numerous graphics or image files can now be managed more easily with a new feature that tracks changes to graphic files regardless of changes made to written content. New reporting capabilities validate cross-references across documents, and XML import features for WAN users can automatically include importing of reference graphics. There is a new SOAP-based dialog for reviewing and navigating Astoria Annotations within the Astoria Web Client and the WAN Bridge for Epic Editor, and new support for Blast Radius XMetaL 4.5 ActiveX for XML editing complementing support for Arbortext XmetaL 4.5 Author, Epic Editor 5.1 and Adobe FrameMaker 7.1. Book Level Administrator, a key component of Astoria for Aerospace, has been enhanced to simplify book updates by using Astoria Workbench, a new user interface based on Eclipse, an open source integrated development environment (IDE). The Astoria Content Management Platform 4.4 now supports the Apache Web Server and Citrix MetaFrame. Astoria Version 4.4 is available immediately from Astoria Software and its Services Partners. http://www.astoriasoftware.com

Workshare Unveils Freeware to Discover Privacy & Compliance Violations in Microsoft Office Documents

Workshare announced the immediate availability of TRACE! V2, a free meta-ware utility for Microsoft Office users that automatically alerts individuals to the risk levels in the documents they touch. TRACE! V2 discovers content that violates federal regulations, corporate policy or personal privacy. TRACE! V2 runs continuous audits, alerting users to violations. TRACE! V2 comes with a document security management console that provides controls for scanning folders, emails and websites and visibility to recent document alerts. It also provides reporting on all documents, run either dynamically or in batch mode. TRACE! V2 improves on the hidden data capabilities of V1 to include document content analysis and exposes risks in the areas of intellectual property, financial disclosure, privacy and identity, profanity and regulatory restrictions. TRACE! V2 dynamically tracks nearly 100 content security risks and provides always-on alerts to users with risk level warnings of problems in new and existing documents. TRACE! V2 analysis combines document content with taxonomy. This capability can differentiate between the normally benign use of the word "confidential" in the document body versus its highly risky presence in document headers or footers. TRACE! V2 also automatically updates the list of risks when new security regulations - such as HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley, Section 501 of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, Canada's PIPEDA, the EC Data Protection Act and the California Breach Law (SB1386) - are issued. The free download of TRACE! V2 is available at http://www.workshare.com

Microsoft to Deliver RSS Support to End Users & Developers in Longhorn

Microsoft Corp. announced support for RSS in the next version of the Microsoft Windows operating system, code-named "Longhorn." The RSS functionality in Longhorn is being designed to make it simple for end users to discover, view and subscribe to RSS feeds, as well as make it easier for developers to incorporate the rich capabilities of RSS into their applications. In addition, Microsoft announced Simple List Extensions, a set of extensions to RSS that can be used to enable Web sites to publish lists as RSS feeds. Microsoft is making the specification and the Simple List Extensions freely available via the Creative Commons license, the same license under which the RSS 2.0 specification was released. While browsing the Web, Longhorn users will be able to discover RSS feeds through an illuminated icon, as well as read the feed while still in the Web browser. In addition, users will be able to subscribe to an RSS feed as simply as adding a Web site to their "favorites." The RSS features in Longhorn also will enable application developers to harness the capabilities of RSS in their applications. For example, business users about to attend a conference could subscribe to the conference's event calendar. They can then use a Longhorn RSS-enabled calendar application to view the events in the RSS feed from within their calendar application. The RSS support in Longhorn includes a Common RSS Feed List, Common RSS Data Store, and an RSS Platform Sync Engine. http://www.microsoft.com

RSD Releases EOS Thin Client 3.4

RSD announced the release of EOS Thin Client 3.4 with functionality designed to transparently customize the presentation of and access to content. Form management, a new feature available in its Web-based control panel, permits the administrator to set defaults for the activation of predefined actions when content is delivered on-line. These settings, which can be applied to all content or to specific groups of documents, provide the administrator with the means to tailor the presentation of content and protect against unauthorized export or e-mailing of sensitive information. When accessed, a document can automatically be converted from a print format to a viewing format. Content that is set up as a table can routinely be displayed so that headers and side titles are visible as the user scrolls through it. The process of printing can be streamlined with appropriate defaults for font size and page orientation.
Data mining is made easier by its automatic activation when a document is accessed. To address strategic and security requirements of specific organizations unable to use applets for content viewing, EOS Thin Client now delivers direct HTML viewing abilities. EOS Thin Client 3.4 offers a consistent means of administering, managing and retrieving all types of business information. http://www.rsd.com

Workshare Professional 4.0 Integrates with Microsoft's SharePoint Technologies

Workshare introduced integration between Workshare Professional 4.0 and Microsoft's SharePoint Products and Technologies for single master tracking and enabling the secure sharing of documents inside and outside of the perimeter. Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services and Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 enable users to create, manage and build their own collaborative workspaces and make them available throughout and beyond the organization. However, this additional channel of document distribution adds to the growing risks around document security, accuracy and compliance. Workshare Professional 4's SharePoint Integration Option can ensure users are working off the correct master document, eliminating the errors and confusion resulting from multiple "masters" residing in multiple repositories. In addition, Workshare Professional 4's SharePoint Integration Option enables secure document exchange inside and outside of the perimeter by enforcing document security policies, removing potentially damaging confidential information and providing an always-on audit of important document processes and events. The Workshare Professional 4 SharePoint Integration Option is available immediately. For current Workshare Professional 4 users, it is US $50 per seat for a perpetual license with volume discounts. http://www.workshare.com

OASIS Approves DITA as Standard

OASIS announced that its members have approved the Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) version 1.0 as an OASIS Standard. DITA defines an XML architecture for designing, writing, managing, and publishing many kinds of information in print and on the Web. DITA consists of a set of design principles for creating "information-typed" modules at a topic level. DITA enables organizations to deliver content as closely as possible to the point-of-use, making it ideal for applications such as integrated help systems, web sites, and how-to instruction pages. DITA's topic-oriented content can be used to exploit new features or delivery channels as they become available. Participation in the OASIS DITA Technical Committee remains open. All those interested in advancing this work, including users, XML tools vendors, and consultants on Information Architecture and Content Management Systems (CMS), are encouraged to join the Committee. OASIS hosts an open mail list for public comment and the dita-user mailing list for exchanging information on implementing the standard. http://www.oasis-open.org

Microsoft Corp. announced that it is adopting XML technology for the default file formats in the next version of Microsoft Office editions, currently code-named "Office 12." The new file formats, called Microsoft Office Open XML Formats, will become the defaults for the "Office 12" versions of Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint, which are expected to be released in the second half of 2006. The interoperability capabilities of the Microsoft Office Open XML Formats enable Microsoft Office applications to directly access data stored in systems outside those applications, such as server-based line-of-business applications. These third-party applications, in turn, can access data stored in the new Office file formats. Microsoft Office Open XML Formats are fully documented file formats with a royalty-free license. Anyone can integrate them directly into their servers, applications and business processes, without financial consideration to Microsoft. People using Office 2000, Office XP and Office 2003 will be able to open, edit and save files using the new formats, thanks to a free update available as a download from Microsoft that enables those older Office versions to work with the new formats. Documents created with the current binary file formats in Office also will be fully compatible with "Office 12" applications. So workers can save documents to their current formats and exchange those documents with people using "Office 12" -- and when they upgrade to "Office 12," they can continue to use their existing binary documents. Microsoft will provide further technical information about the Microsoft Office Open XML Formats, including draft versions of the schemas, to help ensure that developers and IT professionals can be prepared to take advantage of the formats before product shipment. People interested in the new file formats and the next version of Office can get additional information beginning Monday, June 6 at a preview site, http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview
