Microsoft Announces Rights Management Services For Windows Server 2003
2/21/2003

Microsoft Corp. announced plans for Windows Rights Management Services (RMS), a technology for Windows Server 2003 that will give organizations advanced ways to help secure sensitive internal business information including financial reports and confidential planning documents. Windows Rights Management Services will work with applications to provide a platform-based approach to providing persistent policy rights for Web content and sensitive corporate documents of all types. Beta code for Windows Rights Management Services will be broadly available in the second quarter of 2003. Using Windows Rights Management Services, applications such as information portals, word processors or e-mail clients can be built so that users will be able to easily designate both who can have access to specific content and what kinds of access rights they can have. Rights and policy are managed by the server, while clients running RMS-enabled applications allow users to apply rights with a click of a button. In addition, enterprises can enforce policy broadly and reliably by centrally delivering templates that automate the process for example, making the policy around what constitutes "company confidential" uniform and easy to manage. Because Windows Rights Management Services technology is an ASP.NET Web service built on the Microsoft .NET Framework, it can interoperate with business processes via Web services. RMS technology uses XrML (Extensible Rights Markup Language). Microsoft will release two software development kits in the second quarter of 2003. www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/rm

Entopia Introduces K-Bus
2/10/2003

Entopia, Inc. unveiled Entopia K-Bus, a software platform that connects the information, people and resources of an organization through a multi-faceted metadata layer that is transparent to end-users. The result is relevant information -- on demand -- that considers not only the semantic value of content and information, but also the social activity around it and its organizational context. Coupled with enterprise repositories, applications and business processes, and built on J2EE architecture, the K-Bus solution builds knowledge assets out of existing content while information continues to reside in its original repositories such as file shares, email servers, Quantum (Entopia's content management and collaboration suite), document management repositories, the intranet, the extranet and the Internet. The K-Bus enterprise knowledge infrastructure (EKI) automatically creates intelligent metadata by 1) semantically indexing content and data; 2) tracking the context, popularity and social activity surrounding this data in real-time; and 3) adding organizational and personal context. This metadata is the key to the "knowledge" available in the enterprise and. Entopia K-Bus is currently in beta testing. General availability of Entopia K-Bus will begin in May 2003. www.entopia.com

Microsoft Renames "XDocs" to "InfoPath"; Supports CDA
2/10/2003

Microsoft Corp. InfoPath , the new Office family application formerly code-named "XDocs," now supports Clinical Document Architecture (CDA), a national XML standard for the healthcare industry. Built on XML, Microsoft InfoPath streamlines the process of gathering information through rich, dynamic forms and ensures that customers can reuse information across their organization. With InfoPath, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and HMOs can capture vital information about patients within an InfoPath form that they create, validate the information for accuracy, and save it in a CDA-compliant file, which can be read and used by other back-end systems, such as hospital information systems, document management software, portals or other organizations. A physician filling out a patient's diagnosis form could query an external knowledge base to identify the appropriate medication covered by the patient's insurance, check for potential interactions with the other medications in the patient's file, and submit the order to the patient's local drugstore for the pharmacy to fill - all from within InfoPath. www.microsoft.com/office/preview/infopath
