I just published a new white paper, Social Publishing with Drupal, sponsored by Acquia and also available here. We forget that publishing and blogging (including this post) are stove-piped operations. Drupal is an example of a social publishing platform, developed and maintained as an open source project, and delivered at an affordable cost.

Drupal is now deployed in major media companies, high technology firms, universities, magazine publishers, government agencies (including the White House), research groups, and non-profit organizations. Whether it is in a commercial, non-profit, or government setting, organizations rely on Drupal to project their presence over the web and to channel the interactive experiences that foster communities of contributors.

By leveraging Drupal’s capabilities as a social publishing platform, organizations are able to reinforce their branded experiences and deliver relevant content to their customers and stakeholders. By exploiting Drupal as an open source project, developers supporting these organizations can easily enhance and extend Drupal’s capabilities, and introduce innovative modes of interactivity that meet specific business requirements.

Drupal is an attractive investment with substantial business benefits. Organization can keep their license and support costs modest by building on an open source project. As I mentioned in November, Dale Waldt has joined us as a senior consultant, and yesterday he started posting on the XML blog. Check out his first post on "Why Adding Semantics to Web Data is Difficult".

We host a number of blogs, some more active than others. One of the least active (although it still gets a surprising amount of traffic) has been our CTO blog. However, I am happy to say that Colin Britton started blogging on semantic technologies yesterday. As a co-founder and CTO of Metatomix he led the development of a commercial product based on RDF - a not very well understood W3C semantic web standard. Colin's first post on the CTO blog starts a series that will help shed a little more light on semantic technologies and their practical applications.

Some of you know that I remain skeptical of the new world "Semantic Web" vision, but I do think semantic technologies are important and have a lot to offer, and Colin will help you see why. Check out his first post and let him know what you think about semantic technologies and what you would like to know about.

Beyond Search and Search

As many of you know from our press release at Gilbane Boston, two of the reports we will be publishing in the next few of months have to do with search. Lynda Moulton, who runs our Enterprise Search consulting practice is working on Enterprise Search Markets and Applications: Capitalizing on Emerging Demand, and our colleague Steve Arnold is writing Beyond Search: What to do When you’re Enterprise Search System Doesn’t Work. Lynda's report covers the "Enterprise Search" market, what organizations are doing with the variety of technologies considered to be enterprise search products, and what their experiences have been. By the way Lynda is collecting experiences about implementations and would love to hear about yours.

Steve's report is a look at what is coming next, and is largely, but not only, based on an analysis of what Google is doing, what they are planning on doing, and the emerging ecosystem they are creating. This is fascinating stuff. Steve has recently launched a must-read blog, Beyond Search, where you can get a peek at some of what will be in our report. For example, see his thoughts on enterprise search terminology.

Both reports will be important tools for enterprise IT strategists and executives. We'll keep you posted on their progress.

Lynda Moulton's post over on our Enterprise Search Blog is a good place to start on what, as of last week, has emerged - thanks to Steve Arnold - about Google's nearer-than-you-might-think plans.

Web 2.0, 3.0 and so on

The recent Web 2.0 conference predictably accelerated some prognostication on Web 3.0. I don't think these labels are very interesting in themselves, but I do admit that the conversations about what they might be, if they had a meaningful existence, expose some interesting ideas. Unfortunately, they (both the labels and the conversations) also tend to generate a lot of over-excitement and unrealistic expectations, both in terms of financial investment and doomed IT strategies. Dan Farber does his usual great job of collecting some of the thoughts on the recent discussion in "Web 2.0 isn’t dead, but Web 3.0 is bubbling up".

One of the articles Dan links to is a New York Times article by John Markoff, where John basically equates Web 3.0 with the Semantic Web. Maybe that's his way of saying very subtly that there will never be a Web 3.0? No, he is more optimistic. Dan also links to Nick Carr's post welcoming Web 3.0, but even Carr is gentler that he should be.

But here's the basic problem with the Semantic Web - it involves semantics. Semantics are not static, language is not static, science is not static. Even more, rules are not static either, but at least in some cases, syntax, and logical systems have longer shelf lives.

Now, you can force a set of semantics to be static and enforce their use - you can invent little worlds and knowledge domains where you control everything, but there will always be competition. That's how humans work, and that is how science works as far as we can tell. Humans will break both rules and meanings. And although the Semantic Web is about computers as much (or more) than about humans, the more human-like we make computers, the more they will break rules and change meanings and invent their own little worlds.

This is not to say that the goal of a Semantic Web hasn't and won't generate some good ideas and useful applications and technologies - RDF itself is pretty neat. Vision is a good thing, but vision and near-term reality require different behavior and belief systems.
